    #1, everyone watching this has to remember that these are his results, with his gun. Shotguns shooting slugs can be a lot like 22 long rifles. The gun will tell you what it likes. Winchester Super X in my benelli's Supernova is absolutely dead on out to 70 yards. You have to test different slugs in your gun to determine what your gun likes. Don't just take a UA-cam guy's word for it. Test it yourself

      Yup 100% right and I mention this in the video for this exact reason. I think it is good though to show people what's out there and at the same price point and that is easy to find. Great feedback though and thanks for commenting I appreciate it!

      You definitely have your facts 99/100% dead on, sir ,I can't remember how many stories I've heard about that random idea, everyone should always think about the sniper mentality, SQUEEZE IT OFF, knowing you found a good pattern in the right place, is biggest relief you will ever feel, but there's also one other little detail, you will need knowledge of your shotguns trajectory of bullets flight

    • @wayneeden98
      @wayneeden98 10 місяців тому +1

      There's one more detail I wanted to put in my opinionated reply, if you extend your shooting range and trusting your own shooting skill, for 50,75,and maybe 100yds you have finished up your zero, if you have enough curiosity about how much trajectory drop your slug will have out to so far, you might want to make notes about your trajectory, cause that will give you some extra range, cause hunters will take that extra range, if it's coming down to their last chances of seeing any available deer in the area, but what I'm saying about the difference in different brands and weights, the natural law of human physics, everyone's aiming skills are gonna be a little different, the longer the shot ,the larger the 50/50 chance gets on hitting that deer,

      Welcome to the shotgun brotherhood and that's great you got some value out of the video. Always test your shotgun and see what it does with different ammo. I would also say make sure you are fitted correctly to your shotgun you can get this done at a lot of gun clubs for free if you ask or take a clay shooting class for cheap and they will fit you. Some guns stores will but not all. Might help as well as trying different ammo. This being a fixed full choke shotgun reacts different but I'm glad it gave you a few names of ammo to look at. Shoot straight my friend.

    I've shot Remington sluggers for about 30 years but with a scope out of an old smooth bore REM 870. with a scope at 50 yards it hits point of aim, At 75 to 80 yards the group opens up to 4 inches from point of aim, still not bad.,
    When I sight in my scope it's always from a rest.
    On deer killed with the sluggers I've rarely seen a pass through shot and they generally break up into 3 main pieces.
    I helped at a deer prosser shop and have seen lots of deer carcass and always asked what they were shot with.

      That's because remington sluggers use a softer lead. Brennekee's barley deform/ expand because they use a very hard cast style lead,.I suppose it doesn't matter with 12ga size holes through the deer boiler room. I've killed most all my deer with winchest super x and remington sluggers. Either one makes nasty wounds. As I said, buy a few boxes of different brands and see which one holds the best groups.

    I've been using some Brenneke K.O. slugs lately. The K.O. slugs out of my 20" Mossberg 88 I actually get better groups than my 18.5" semi auto with a rifled choke using powershok slugs. By better groups I mean they are more centered around my point of aim at a given distance.

    As others have stated, Remington Accutips are excellent sabots for rifled barrels. 1-1/4” to 1-1/2” groups at 100 yards with rifled 870 + Leupold Ultimate Slam shotgun scope (discontinued). They mushroom to about 1” when recovered and have great weight retention. Problems: cost and availability.

    Videos like this are particularly useful for me given the ridiculous laws here in Japan for hunting. It's illegal to simply go out into your backyard or anywhere outside of a designated gun range and test your gun and how it handles different ammo/spread comparisons, etc. And even then most gun ranges won't even allow that. (The irony is this makes gun owners even less safe out here since they can't practice properly.) So getting an idea for good ammo for my old A303 saves a lot of time and wasted money on ammo that might underperform. Obviously, your results aren't a true substitute for practice and testing the ammo myself, but it's the best I can get here, legally. Thanks for taking the time to put together a great comparison video.

    Great video! Whats the best 12Gauge slug barrel length for hunting deer? Thx.

    • @Kodiak-Outdoors
      @Kodiak-Outdoors  3 місяці тому

      26″-28″ barrels: These are standard barrel lengths that can be used for all shotgun applications, ranging from wing shooting to slug hunting. While a 26” barrel is lighter and more maneuverable, a 28” barrel is going to be more accurate for long-range shots and should be regarded as perhaps the best all-around barrel length.

    • @Kodiak-Outdoors
      @Kodiak-Outdoors  Рік тому

      Thanks man! For zero I would first figure out what's kind of max range you would shoot. In areas I hunt that's maybe 60yards if I'm lucky so something like 30yards would work. If you can go further and you feel comfortable shooting further say 100yards I would say 50yards. Really depends on dot size out at that distance. I would try it similar to how I did it here and try it at a few distances to see what works best. Ammo is also going to play a factor but once dialed in your going to dropping deer no problem!

    • @realquiet3269
      @realquiet3269 9 місяців тому

      I hope you found some real help. This guy is clueless.
      Zero to your range that you expect to take the shot. Look up your slugs ballistics and figure your drops and verify, they will vary. I zeroed mine to 25 yards and confirmed at 50 yards. My drop was 1” @50, dead on @25.
      Also, use 3 shot groups. Do at least three shots before making an adjustment.
      For slugs, you should really clean the barrel with a bore snake every three shots. The lead fouling is amazing with slugs.
      Also bring two chokes, cylinder and improved cylinder. The slug may like one more than the other. If you feel like testing it, some have amazing results with rifles chokes.
      This guys video is pretty awful. “My one shot group is 0 MOA, at any range. 100% precision, 0% accuracy.”

  • @Kapt.Krunch
    @Kapt.Krunch 11 місяців тому +1

    From what I was told years ago, I don't know if its true. That Winchester slugs are a little undersize. And Remington and Federal are the same size.
    My shotgun with a scope could shoot Remington and Federal with minimal adjustment. But Winchester would be completely off the paper at 75 yards.

    • @Kodiak-Outdoors
      @Kodiak-Outdoors  11 місяців тому

      So this is actually a great comment. The tolerances for shotgun barrels varies more then most people know based on brand. Therefore slugs also vary more as well to fit branded shotguns. A 12ga from brand A won't have the same barrel as brand B, even though it's a 12ga. This is why you are spot on and why it's important to test your shotgun with different ammo.

    How ever you think want to consider the modern day since our have come to be what they are since they came to be, on the other hand, if it's not a deer barrel, it's a small game barrel, a smooth bore barrel, and the foster slug is just that a foster slug is a,is a ,is a, slug ,foster slug-musket ball,
    A really good friend of mine, recently told me there's no regulation on long barrel small game shot barrels, but the regulation is on the short barrel, it can't be any shorter than 18inches, so there for 99% ,of all your gun stores and sporting stores will have anything from 20 - 24 inches barrels, everyone really needs to think about the way rifles are actually made, well, shotguns style shotguns that are made for rifle style hunting deerhunting ,everyone thinks it's all one company over another, that is a little bit it, but not much, the military prefers the mossberg, the civilian population prefer any of the rest, there are hard core Remington people and hard core Winchester people, I have seen a given fair share of all of them, some people think long barrel shot barrels are better than shotgun deer barrels, but I haven't seen any factual data, one against the other, but deerhunting barrels are short 20-24 inches, muzzle loaders are the same way, and ammo on the other hand, hornady ammo is considered the top rankings,, at a 100yds if you can get anything to maintain
    3-6 inch pattern, the kill zone area is your main objective, that goes with any ammo, if you flinch just a little bit you might a shot drift off a little bit, but I have always found a good philosophy to your target shooting practice at a short distance and for everything you might shoot ,the ramp rear sight is the best, I'm just trying to give you the best of what I have experienced in my life trails, you will find people with blow hard bullshit stories, then you have to consider the details about the shotgun or their actual skill level might be of question, just because they can't hit the target doesn't mean there's something wrong with the shotgun or the ammo, always connect up someone who has target shooting experience, it will make a difference,
