    Thank you for posting this and clarifying the details not seen while the engine is still in the vehicle. This will greatly simplify the job for any DIY'er out there that is facing this thousand-dollar repair.

    Got a question for you. For the dohc, does the cam gears align in numerical order when you get TDC cause I'm new and trying to set the timing on a project.

    • @MrDoingEverything
      @MrDoingEverything  3 роки тому

      Set everything at there marks The cam gears need to be locked in place afterwards then the adjuster gets tightened.

    well, i did managed to get it going and ran it for a while for like a couple of months, then monday night 5/18 , when i started it, it made a horrable noise, i shut it off, and left it. tore it apart the timing cover, and the timing was off a bit, i did some reseach on the issue, and to come to find out, the adjustable tentoner was the culprit, so going to try to get to where it needs to be again to see if it will run right, if not, the heads will have to come off and fix the valves. lucky me.

    • @MrDoingEverything

      daryl philbrick Hopefully that does not need to happen. Dang make sure all marks are right on the marks. Don,t allow your self to be happy until its that way.This motor needs to be that way for sure. But if you do need to pull off the heads at least you will have a head job done to After that it will run real good. Best of luck.

      it was , all the timing marks were perfect, it was the timing tentnor that sprung a bit then made the whole thing to be out of wack. so im going to reset the timing again 2 cams are 1/4 to foward while the other 2 are perfect aligned i will get it right again, it ran great once before.
      thank you for your support.

  • @LastTrumpRevelation

    How far did you slide the socket onto the support you bent. Like did you bend it at the base of the support or the end cause I was just worried about cracking the support and also about getting the screw back in if I kinda curved the support when bending. So did this work out well? Is the car still going good? I am about to take on this kind of belt for the first time. I have done a lot of work on Saturns I owned. I have had the timing chain off of the 1.9 SOHC a couple times and replaced the cylinder heads a few times. This seems easy compared to those jobs but you know I am looking for wisdom before doing it from someone who has done it. I was also wondering if you could just take the belt off and let the tension off the sprocket and then just torque the sprocket with a wrench to reload the tension while installing the belt. Well thanks for the videos. I hope you see this and can comment.

    • @MrDoingEverything
      @MrDoingEverything  7 років тому

      Yes i bent it at the base. Everything was fine afterwards and yes the vue is still going strong. I even changed the water pump at the same time. I bought a timing kit is what i did. Water pump came with the kit. Everything went well and it was easy to do. I would say after you do it just double check everything to much sure everything is where it needs to be. Good luck.

      Hey thanks for the reply. I was reading some comments on your videos after I posted this comment. I think I am pretty well convinced by them to lock everything in place one way or another.

    • @MrDoingEverything
      @MrDoingEverything  7 років тому

      That's what needs to happen to be sure yes.The over head cams need to be in there right place and together be locked from turning. What ever you do and how ever you do it make sure afterwards before turn the motor over everything is back to being unlocked and free. If not it will by messy.

    Question? Since this a gm engine and very similar to my 2000 saab 9-5 3.0t wagon but without the turbo. Can I swap this engine into my saab?

    Any info on the main crank timing marks?

  • @rjaquaponics9266
    @rjaquaponics9266 6 років тому

    Hey Thinking, How do you remove the crank shaft pulley? Do you only remove the 6 bolts or do you need to take off the main center crank shaft bolt too?

    • @MrDoingEverything
      @MrDoingEverything  6 років тому +1

      Can remember if the big bolt needs to be removed to. I'm leaning towards it does.

    • @rjaquaponics9266
      @rjaquaponics9266 6 років тому

      Well, I've gotten advice on both sides. The manual shows the pulley off and then take the center bolt off. Either way, the pulley and the crankshaft plate need to be separated in order to put the new belt on and set the timing. Well, eventually, I'll figure this out. Thanks!

      FYI for others. I did get the crankcase pulley/harmonic balancer removed today. It was rusted on. I used the belt to cup beneath the pulley and pulled on it several times in different directions. Then I used a big bar to slowly and carefully pry it off. It was just rusted and lot's of it. I'll be posting pictures on the Saturn Forum. Thank you for responding. You make good videos! Rj

    If i just wanted to change the belt do i need to worry about how the timing sits if i don't plan on taking the pulleys off or?

  • @mikecraft5851

    Why did you bend the shroud bolt mounts up????? Did they break when you bent them back??

    • @MrDoingEverything
      @MrDoingEverything  9 років тому

      David Jones No not at all. The universal cam locking tool I used. These shroud bolt mounts were in the way to use the tool to lock the cam shafts gears. With the tool for this engine it would be fine and no bending would be needed. But that tool is not cheap. The tool I have is a cheap one and works good. Hope this gives you better understanding

    • @mikecraft5851
      @mikecraft5851 9 років тому

      Thank you. My cams are lined right with the timing notches but, the crank is not lined. The number one plug is tdc so, should it be okay?

    • @mikecraft5851
      @mikecraft5851 9 років тому

      The belt looks good and the tension is lined as well. I was just changing the water pump.

    • @MrDoingEverything
      @MrDoingEverything  9 років тому

      I was not taking any chances. The belts are rated for 100.000 km. So l just got the kit and changed everything. To be sure Is good. Costs extra I know. But with these motors if the belt does break so does the motor.The valves will hit the pistins.

    • @MrDoingEverything
      @MrDoingEverything  9 років тому

      David Jones Well as soon as you take the old belt of and then the new belt goes on and it gets tighten down. Things are going to move. You don,t want anything to move out of line. That's why the cam gears need to be held firmly in place. Also the crank shaft should be held in place firmly to. When doing this you want to make sure its perfect. There is no extra room in between the valves and pistins. What ever or how ever you do this timing belt change. Make sure everything is locked or you will end up having problems.

    was wonder ho you did the timing belt, did you use a timing belt kit or did you kist some how lock them in place? because thats what ill be doing in a couple of months is changing the belt, water pump, ect. let me know please, and thanks in advance.

    • @MrDoingEverything
      @MrDoingEverything  9 років тому

      daryl philbrick I bought the hole timing kit and changed it all. Here is a video showing what I used to lock and how I did it so it would work. It the cheapest way. The other way is not cheap. Meaning the gear lock tool they want to sell you that fits. Anyway this toll I used cost about $40.00 and worked real good. ua-cam.com/video/VHTSzvLVjQg/v-deo.html

    • @MrDoingEverything
      @MrDoingEverything  9 років тому

      That's it. Its in good hands know with a person that likes taking care of what they have. Good for you. There is nothing wrong with rednecking something. As long as it does what it needs to do. That's the bottom line anyway. The cam,s just can,t move. What ever way you can do that. Then its ok. Best of luck. Now that were in some nicer weather I,m regoing through mine to see if there are any needs to it. So far there is a ball joint bad. I just changed a back wheel bearing the other day. After I look it all through l,ll give it a fresh oil spray.

    Good morning I have a Catera 97, 3.0L I like you're video and I did what you said to align except the left side as you're looking at the engine the left side does not align by a 1 and 1/2 tooth, how do I fix that on that side everything else matches?

    • @MrDoingEverything
      @MrDoingEverything  9 років тому

      +arenaseparabe Maybe the one that's not lining up is off the true spot on the cam shaft. To straighten it up. You would need to make sure the cam shaft is in its right place then re-set the gear. Then everything is back in line. Re-setting the gear is not hard. I never had one off. I,m pretty sure there just pressed on. All the other ones I,v done were pressed on. The gear sets on a tapered shaft and the bolt holds it tight. JUST MAKE SURE THE CAM SHAFT IS WHERE IT NEEDS TO BE. THEN BY RELEASING THE BOLT WILL RELEASE THE GEAR TO BE ABLE TO PLACE IT BACK IN LINE WITH THE MARKS. MAKE SURE THE CAM SHAFT DOES NOT MOVE. This matters a lot. You don,t want to have that wrong. Can make for a lot of damage if not right. Another way is to just make sure the cam shaft its self is in the right place. The gear does not really matter. Its the cam shaft the needs to be right. As log as the cam shaft is in the right place. That's what matters. Hope this helps out.

    • @MrDoingEverything

      Have you checked you coolant if that's ok your thermostat might not be opening and closing when it needs to be which will make it run hot. Its a big job to change the thermostat so more then likely its old and not working properly is my guess. A blown head gasket will also cause the engine to run hot. A wore out water pump will also do that. What ends up happening on the water pump is the fins that move the coolant around wear out and it moves less coolant around which cause the motor to run much hotter.
