This is a great cover of one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It rates with Fionna Apple's cover of "Across the Universe". Natalie has a voice for the ages.
sorry for my ignorance.. I never listen too much from her.. but, hell! she's awesome! what a voice! some special texture in her voice... I dunno... now she is on my favs!
I saw her a few years ago with Bob Dylan. I confess I wasn't familiar with her music because i tend to avoid contemporary or pop music. I was absolutely wrong. I was completely blown away, engaged, mesmerized. I will no longer assume that just because an artist is current, there music is commercial fodder. If she should do a show in or near Maine again, I'm getting a good seat.
Her vocals are so restrained yet dynamic, tells the story with her eyes, the wavering gives it a eeriness that is unique to her style, I wish she went Goth, imagine the depth of darkness she could plumb with such sensitivity to lyrical context and a very dark voice.
Wow... two things I love together. David Bowie and Natalie Merchant. It would be wonderful to actually hear them sing together. This video is wonderful! Her version is very beautiful. I don't really see any reason to say one is better than the others as some do... it's MUSIC... it simply is... David wrote it and he is a musical genius and his version is wonderful. And Natalie Merchant is incredibly gifted and has a beautiful unique voice and definitely does the song justice. Thanks!!
i don't understand why there are so many haters really it's a wonderful cover and i doubt that any other other musician would have been able to interpret it like this.
@Downbythewater73 I went to see her in concert in Brighton, UK she did songs from her new album 'Leave your Sleep' and some older stuff it was fantastic she is wonderful live :)
Oh, yeah, this is glorious, as is usually the case with something Natalie touches :-). I'll bet even Bowie digs it (aside from the royalties *chuckle!*), which gives me an idea --- imagine a duet, with Natalie as "Ground Control" and DB as "Major Tom". *That* would bring down the house! :-D
@Downbythewater73 Thanks for sharing... This is so great and makes me cry. I love Natalie Merchant and all of your poetry... One question: your nick is a PJ Harvey song?
As good as this concert in NY was, (and it was very good), she's performed even better ones, including a tremendous Hammerstein Ballroom appearance in 1997 or so (though most recent appearance at Hiro Ballroom in 2008 or so was only soso)...would love to see her tour again.
I like her on the verse, and a little less on the chorus and the bridge...part of it is, that she has an inner intensity that isnot expressed like ou are used to....She is good...She didn't do good on "Sympathy" byt he Stones
This is really good :) so what?? Its not the original like Bowies version...but do you know that David Bowie didnt write this song either ? :) its a Bob Dylan classic lol =D
I think she is a wonderful singer but this is def NOT the best song for her song to sing IMHO, It sounds much better in other variations. this one just doesnt pack the punch bowie packed when he sang it.
Beautiful song, but not to be sang by a girl. Don't get me wrong, she has very beautiful voice, but no one would ever perform this song like David Bowie.

This is such a beautiful version of David Bowie's song. She made it her own and that's what I think artists should do, put their own spin on it.
I LOVE YOU NATALIE , FROM ARGENTINA
one of my favorite songs ever performed by the best singer ever
I'm a huge David Bowie fan, and I have to say that this is amazing.
What is essential for me is that the loneliness and isolation of space be brought out by the singer; she gave me chills! Well done!
Totally Awesome.........sing it Natalie....your a beautiful woman with a lovely voice.....The stars look vey different today *_*
She is amazing, an incredible singer. Great, unique voice, this is a beautiful interpretation of Bowie's original. Love it!
I saw her do this live a few years back....it was amazing!! Loved iit!!
Magic
Her voice make me sad but is marvelous
I love her rendition of this song
When Bowie is covered well it only enhances his legend.
Truly mesmerizing, Natalie can do no wrong.
Love her...what a gift
OMG.....LOVE THE WAY SHE IS DOING THIS BOWIE SONG.....THANK YOU FOR THE POST...
sorry for my ignorance..
I never listen too much from her.. but, hell! she's awesome! what a voice! some special texture in her voice... I dunno... now she is on my favs!
JUST GOT BACK FROM SEEING HER ONE HR AGO
SHE WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY
I start to cry, when she sings "Can you hear me, Major Tom?" I wish she would come back...
I saw her a few years ago with Bob Dylan. I confess I wasn't familiar with her music because i tend to avoid contemporary or pop music. I was absolutely wrong. This song will warp your mind in a good way
when she dance on the stage is amazing
Great cover. She did a good job, and her band too.
Thanks for posting the video.

Great voice
Great cover unique voice
sooo beautiful
Great performance, as great as bowie's!
amazing lovin it
It seems that a lot of people like to rain down criticism on Natalie. In my opinion, Natalie is a unique talent. That's all folks !
It'a all in the details and how she throws down her cape at 2:45 taken by the back camera...this song wouldn't have been the same without it.
Her voice is insanely good. Good sir, you get my lowered thumb. What's more, her voice just oozes sexiness
awesome lady
she rocked this song
:)
Thank you very much for posting this Video! V.
Just been to see her in concert she is amazing :)

@Downbythewater73 I went to see her in concert in Brighton, UK she did songs from her new album 'Leave your Sleep' and some older stuff it was fantastic she is wonderful live :)

She fucking rocked that shit!! Go Natalie!!
Wow.
@0marigolds - I agree, but only when they're done right. In this instance, Natalie did it right. As she always does.
Mesmerizing performance.
N.M could sing the phone book and make it sound good, imo.
@rhyfelur
Well said! I agree 10,000 %.
Wow. Nice.
maravillosa
I would like to hear Natalie and David Bowie do this as a duet, Natalie could be "Ground Control" and David "Major Tom".
I AGREE 1000%
i love her voice sooo much! but I will always love Bowie's version more...
can anyone belieeve what a goddess natalie is..nothing belongs to her .
@marko0430 shes great check out the album ophelia this was my first Natalie Merchant cd and one of my favourites
Goosebumps @1:16

can you eeeeearrr me: fantastic
she is....new album next month.
hard song to do but she did it well...
where can i find a download of this song i ve looked everywhere and its nowhere
As good as this concert in NY was, (and it was very good), she's performed even better ones, including a tremendous Hammerstein Ballroom appearance in 1997 or so (though most recent appearance at Hiro Ballroom in 2008 or so was only soso)...would love to see her tour again.
There's only one Bowie, but this is pretty good.
I like her on the verse, and a little less on the chorus and the bridge...part of it is, that she has an inner intensity that isnot expressed like ou are used to....She is good...She didn't do good on "Sympathy" byt he Stones
I was expecting a big exploding chorus but it seems she was really holding herself back.
with the ladies? can we watch?
This is really good :) so what?? Its not the original like Bowies version...but do you know that David Bowie didnt write this song either ? :) its a Bob Dylan classic
lol =D
Why?
@jetsonic69 ROFL, Bob Dylan did NOT write this you fool. Where did you get that from anyway????
Housten (spelling?) you ask?
you make it sound like a bad thing
I dont like this version as good as the original, but I give it an "A" for effort.
I like this cover better than Bowie's
i like marchant, a lot...but i think cat power's version is better...the only thing is that it isn't avaialbe =(
I actually like this version better... with her voice. Although Bowie's version is great.
Girl's got balls.
Very nice :) She sings weirdly but I like it ! The band is very good :)
Im
stepping through the door
And Im floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars
look very different today
5****Z
errr,no,she sings just like Natalie Merchant................
I think she is a wonderful singer but this is def NOT the best song for her song to sing IMHO, It sounds much better in other variations. this one just doesnt pack the punch bowie packed when he sang it.
Natalie is better than bjork.....
Ehh, it's alright but fails in comparison to Bowies
i like her vesion more then David Bowies
David Bowie's is still better. And she missed it, at the and it was "moon" and she said "world".
sucks, bowie is the best
I think a cover should break new ground. This is adept karaoke.
Beautiful song, but not to be sang by a girl.
Don't get me wrong, she has very beautiful voice, but no one would ever perform this song like David Bowie.
Gosh, this is an example of a great singer not having the good sense to know when a song is out of her league. This cover is downright awful.
