Jeep Wrangler: Misfire & Rough Running / Failed Injector
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 лют 2025
- In this video I have a look at a customers 2017 Jeep Wrangler with the big 3.6 with a misfire and a couple codes stored. A P0203 and a P0303 for the injector circuit. It ends up being and easy fix. I didn't have very good videography in this video. Sorry about that 🤷🏼♂️
-Enjoy!

No, I didn't miraculously learn how to speak again. Just an old video I found lurking in my que. Sorry for the poor camera angle but it was the best I could do at the time I did it must be.
Cheers 🍻
Thank you.
you could have fibbed, and told everyone you had some speech lessons!! LOL
You'll get back to it tho. No ma/er, always great content anyways
Jeep installing the alternator backwards is the sign that engine doesn't belong in that bay.
Get a case of that WD, great for putting hoses on
as a chrysler tech its sad yet refreshing to see someone else struggle with that stupid plate that only holds xmas tree clips ... i dont blame the guy that left the bolts out
At Chrysler we leave a few bolts out at the factory just to make you feel comfortable LOL
@@vwwrenchie314 and you are the reason I haven’t quit my job
What a stupid design. Such a pain in the ass to work on and sadly, because it’s stellar quality from Jeep, you have to constantly wrench on it and fix crap you don’t have to on almost any one vehicle. Never again.
Same exact 2017 Jeep (Black ) 40,000 easy miles, Misfire cyl #1 (bad Injector).... $810 dollar repair...you make it look so easy...
Even the smallest things like lifting the screw and start it backwards to use the plastic manifold to hold the screw out of the way are those valuable random tips that will come in handy someday when I'm wishing they could be made to stay out of the way myself. Pure gold and your videos are generally full of them, Thanks Eric.
Those are the reasons why I watch a couple of mechanic channels. These random small tips, such as one of Eric's favorit where he uses a small socket to make a tiny electric tape roll for easier use in the engine bay and such.
@@jima3129 that's Fiat Chrysler for you. Trash company with trash vehicles.
And the reason he starts it backwards is because it is less likely to strip the plastic he is screwing into if he turns it backwards and gets it to lineup with the threads of the hole made by the previous screw. So, turn it backwards until you feel the bump of it riding over the threads and dropping into the next set of threads and then start screwing forwards.
Eric - I don't, nor will I ever, own a jeep but I just say here watching you work on one for 50 minutes because your color commentary is awesome!
Your commitment to the customer and doing the job right is an example to all of us.
Love the way Mrs. O. gazes at you - you guys are great for each other.
Keep the great content coming!
Your right but all cars under the hoods are like this now
I owned a 68 Commando. The only thing good in it was the Buick V6. Everything else was a true POS.
That's funny because he owned a couple grand Cherokees in the past. Granted those were WAY better than the new junk. But still, he had jeeps
I own a 96 jeep cherokee...360 K miles and still kicking. Best car I ever owned. Don't be too hard on Jeep there fella.
Being a Jeep JK owner, I love seeing you work on them because I know I’ll be doing the same work sooner than later! Thanks Eric!!!
Thanks for another 1 hour "Pit Pass" into the Employees Only area! It is always a treat.
I'm an optech at Bosch. Its likely I made that new injector. We make a bazillion of them for Stellantis and the aftermarket. Its really cool to actually see one make its way into your hands. Big fan, keep up the great work
I love the way that the guy that designs the engine never took one apart. Sure you cn put tubes and brackets anywhere, let the next guy worry about taking it apart. Great Job Mr.O.
Great job. Those who complain about what you do need to have their own video channel and show what they do! Remember the old saying, ""It is better to be pissed off than pissed on!"
Nice work Eric .... Now you know why when I retired I looked at the newer Wranglers, talked to a few owners, 50 K of plastic and bad wiring ... decide to keep my 2000 Cherokee Sport 4.0 L... just updated/changed to Bosch 4 port injectors (with silicone ; ) ... took me a total of 45 minutes including coffee break and walking the dog (Bouvier, who assists and keeps the local Riff Raff away) ... The Cherokee's are notorious for needing constant work after 100K ... but most stuff is easy to get to ... half the bolts/nut are metric ... that others are ASE (thank you Chrysler/Benz) ... BTW, those rubber covered twisty ties are great, as a carpenter I have dozens of them in orange, so I can find them ; )
No better way to end a video than with an appearance from the lovely Mrs. O!
At the end of a long, tiring day, an SMA video is just what the doctor ordered. Thanks as always, Eric!
Another cracking fix Eric. The job itself wasn't to hard but a pain in the rear to get to it. Look forward to the next one here over the pond 👍
Eric, your my mentor when it comes to the use of foul language. Always love the "mother lover". I said for 2023 to stop swearing, no need. And as you always say " if I can do it, you can do it" . Great job on another terrific Stellantis product.
Has to be frustrating when a simple injector and heater core job takes so much time. Glad to hear you laugh through it.
No worse than some of the HVAC actuators that require you to strip the dash and HVAC case out to get to them. Or some lighting systems where you need to pull the nose off the car to change out a bulb.
A lot of work on plastic junk.
Your the best there is Eric O!!
This video says it is an hour old !!!! Yet, you are not slurring your speech like a drunken sailor !!!!! Two miraculous cures ??? A palette and an injector !!! Praise the heavens !!! I need to change my heater core in my 2006 RAM 1500 Mega Cab. Along with the blend doors, radiator, water pump and timing chain assembly. That's going to take a week !!! Looking forward to your video on that job. I know that will be two cups coffee and at least 3 danish for the ordeal. Well done, Eric. Waiting for the next video !!!!!
You the man wish I had a shop like yours in my area .
Your not the only one.
Thank you. I was just thinking how do you know which bank is which and you just casually answer the question in my head in real time. Man you're good!
I just did an oil pressure sensor on one of these, and that bracket gave me the same headaches, though my language was much, much worse. Glad it wasn't just me.
Come for the repair, stay for the witty banter. Thanks Mr. O
Chrylser engineer - "No, I am not 3 years old!" - reaches for another crayon.
Really doesn’t matter what company and engineers design engines anymore. Most are junk. Many have design flaws but they don’t care. The warranty is toilet paper and they will tell you wipe your arse with it. Screw them all except MAYBE TOYOTA?
And now taught by Fiat. Could it get worse?
I swear I heard a voice saying let me get a saws all and cut everything out that’s in the way…
Hemi srt muscle motors still murder though. My 6.1 still runs me sideways to work.
I just pulled oil pan out o 426 hemi charger says to remove manifolds jack up the engine it's bullshit take a putty knife ND separate the windage tray just bad instructions
Thank you Dr. O. For the first 10 minutes of surgery there, I thought you were fiddling with a Rubiks Cube. Have a blessed week to you and your family.
Very thorough! Enjoy your commentary along the way. Thanks.
Eric just demonstrated the patience of a master mechanic. Well done sir, well done.
10 years in automotive then 19 years in semi truck engineering as a tech. I love the engineer comments. So true it can be. I could write a book. Just know their tunnel vision and pride can sometimes be the reason for tech frustration. Also note Chrysler had alot of Mercedes design ideas as many engineers from the mother land switch to Chrysler in the mid 2000s .
I LOVE Watching you work because you never yell at me, GET ME A DAMN FLASHLIGHT OVER HERE, or GO GET ME A BLOODY 10 MM SOCKET!!
Always glad you are not sarcastic and cynical, a breath of fresh air!
Even Tony doesn't want to fix it again. Great job, engineers.
I am amazed at Eric's diagnosis skills. It is fun to watch. I drive an '04 Odyssey, 105K, has been and still is a great car, no fansy stuff to break, nothing has broken. Still, I don't work on cars anymore, bending over them is painful to the spine. And I could not dianose these new car failures. We also have a '16 Pilot my wife drives. It is in the shop regularly. I did just disable the CMS, cylinder management, otherwise, back to the dealer for service. Disabling the CMS cut mileage 2 mpg after 4 tanks. It gets 25+ highway and 22.8 locally now. It was getting 24.8 locally with the CMS, but I don't want it to start burning oil. It is out of warranty now, 52K. Honda put in over $5000 of electronics while still in warrantee. Hopefully it is good now!
You have the patience of a saint. All that crap in the way would send me into next week.
After watching your videos for a while, I'm beginning to think that you like it when people lose their minds. You are the master mechanic, not the keyboard warriors.
Have fun pulling the entire dash out of the dodge truck. Oh excuse me Ram truck to do the heater core. I hope you are going to do the evaporator wile your in there. Oh and add the aftermarket cabin filter. Just making sure you do it right. Thanks Chrysler!
Customer probably thinks you just reached down and unplugged the fuel injector and popped in a new one! What a pain just to replace one injector. Great work and color commentary as usual.
Never knew silicone could harm the cats, thanks for that info after I changed injectors on my very neglected hemi I recently purchased and used silicone grease to lube the o-rings. Actually Thank you for doing all these videos, I always learn something from them and it's nice to see someone doing things in a professional manner.
Eric you got your normal speech back!!! It's always fun seeing what someone else has fiddle around with and not put back together properly.
Old video
I'm glad we did this repair together, I didn't even get my hands dirty !
Or burn your hands on the hot parts.
No blood, no repair
The Money Light bit always cracks me up.
Good Video.
Eric, Don’t worry about what people say with respect to lube (silicone) etc. just say what you use and tough s-t to those in the oh oh squad.
That DeWalt cordless ratchet is massive! I really like the size of my Milwaukee cordless ratchet
I'm looking to purchase a cordless ratchet. I watch all these videos and wonder why I haven't bought one already. While that one is pretty large I already have dewalt battery powered tools.
Paid extra close attention today, since I own a 2012 Jeep Wrangler with 182k+ miles on it.
Ouch have your original cut out for ya mate
Good job. That required quite a bit of removal just to get at the injector. I admire your patience.
Now I’m really not being sarcastic here
I freaking love that noise of work being done in the background
That means SMA is doing good
I was dying watching you fiddle with those purge lines. I agree they are ridiculous! Most likely the bank 1 valve cover gasket was replaced due to the bs pcv mounted to the back of the valve cover. Very comment for the o-ring to leak. Talk about a pain in the ass lol.
I just downloaded a movie and before I started watch it I decided to check to see what was on youtube and Oh Boy a new video from SMA. I just have to watch it, the movie can wait. Thanks Eric.
The reverse click technique is a great one to know, thanks for spreading truly helpful tips. Another knowledge bomb dropped on the YT landscape.
Man the tension was real when you were fighting with that bracket . love your work .
I am a DIYer and live on struggle street when working on my cars. I'm glad to know 2 things, one real mechanics struggle too and two it is ok for a DIYer to leave a few bolts out when I reassembly... it will be faster to repair the next time it breaks! Love the channel and have learned a lot from you, thank you.
You can organize your bolts and nuts so you know where they go back. You can put them in plastic bags and label the bags. You can mark the bolts with paint markers or nail polish in different colors to keep track of them. I've even wrapped them in painters tape and written right on the tape. Some people like to stab them into a cardboard box and mark on the box where they go.
@@lucidbarrier - i agree! It’s OK to take your time and segregate bolts and washers! I use a sharpie and ziplock bags on major projects! Painter’s tape is also a must have! Missing bolts are not something i would take lightly!
@Jason Bunting I second this, when I replaced my control arm it came off with 3 bolts and I got it back together using only 2.
The "ya know what just stay there" totally got me. i feel your pain good sir. been following your channel for a few years. Have been able to apply quite a bit to my current job. appreciate all the free knowledge you have bestowed upon us in the view counter. Keep up the good work and stay excellent.
It’ll be back for rocker arms eventually. Nice work un-messing the previous shop’s work on the bracket and harness clips.
I’m glad you posted this, I thought maybe I was the only person that bitched about engineers nearly the whole time I am working on something. Nice persistence and patience.
Crazy to see a low mileage, 6yr old car with such a problem. I guess long gone are the days where cars were built to last. Thanks for the video though, always learn something from them!
You sure got that right. Their bilt to distruc….not like they used to be
Your speech, Eric, it's getting almost back to normal! That's the good part.
The bad part is that you told us the final problem IN THE TITLE! So I couldn't use my own diagnostic skills to try to figure it out before you do. Oh, man......
All in all, another good video.
Old video. ☺
My bet is the mystery lube is Vaseline. Great video as always.
...that's what we used in the diesel fuel injection lab back at college...
Had a 2011 wrangler 3.6. We did injector and coil pack. Still misfiring on #4. Changed lifters and rockers. Run like a change
When you say, 'you won't want to see and hear that,' I do. Suppose the fella that knows what he's doing exposes the bulshittery of some mechanical nightmare. Rock on, Eric, great content. You're a national hero both there in the colony and in North Wales ;-)
I assume you are talking about the lube, I can't be certain but I suspect you might think it comes from Kentucky.
@@chrishartley1210 No. I always use vaseline, or pure Welsh ewe's fat at a push.
Good job Eric as always, thanks for the Mrs O sighting, always cute.
That looked like an aggravating job but you held it together very well. I wouldn't have. Thanks for the ride.
does just a jeep thing come to mind?
the battery powered ratchets and the like sure a boon. Not dragging air hose around or growing old using manual ratchets
Yes, the Bosch part is cheaper than the NAPA/Bosch by about $30.
I recently bought a JK because I always wanted a Jeep despite knowing they are mostly junk mounted to a frame to which owners bolt on more stuff. The need to replace a bad fork in the Daimler Benz gear box was exhorbently expensive and long delayed shipping due to demand. . Now that Jeeps are actually Fiats in disguise makes me honored to say "it's a Jeep thing". Great channel and information. Thanks from Scottsville.
Great video Eric !! I have a 2010 wrangler one of mine injector went bad , it was under the intake . I decided to change the plugs and wire while I had all that stuff off . Getting that egr valve out the way and routing The wires was probably the hardest part smh 🤦🏽♂️
I hope you noticed while reviewing this before posting, how Mrs. O looks at you. That woman loves you, my friend. So, your hokey jokester diatribe has her enthralled - along with us, your audience. Love your videos - keep 'em coming - oh, and the Silicone grease is absolutely essential for not only lube, but higher than normal temperatures, lubricity - if you ever need to take the thing out again - perfect grease for that application. So, don't concern those who don't understand. I have 5 tubes in my toolbox and use it for lots of electrical stuff. Works fine, fails safe, and drains to the bilge. (For those with a boat)
Eric - always love your videos and the professional way you approach the task at hand even if it's one you're not looking forward to.
This video is case and point of why I love my old straight 6, Jeep 4.0L. Easy to get to just about anything you have to repair, replace, and/or tweak.
Keep the new videos coming.. love the content as always.
Make sure you add Watch Wes Work to your rotation. He's the Midwest Eric O!
I helped (by helped I mean did myself) my buddy swap his heater core out in his Ram. He had the AC recovered already and I went to work. That is quite a pain in the ol' tookus to pull the console, the steering column, then the dash to finally get the assembly pulled to swap the heater core. Added "bonus" was I did it on my birthday... would have been nice to see how you did it versus how I done it. Maybe next time.
I know you're a purveyor of goops and sprays. Check out Dow Corning vacuum grease. It's like a wicked thick high purity super lube. I used to use it on gas lasers. I don't think it's expensive. Great for orings.
Thank you for your video. After watching this one and a similar one of yours, I was able to work up the courage to change out one injector and replaced all spark plugs. (with the help of my awesome daughter) I had talked to a couple local garages, and had been quoted $500.00 for replacing just the one injector, and warned that it could be much, much more of a problem. Oh the night mares that they tried to prepare me for! Anyway, it all turned out good. Codes have not come back. The old injector measured 44 ohms cold. Removed substantial mouse nest from under upper intake manifold. Running great now. Thanks for the encouragement, and solid advice.
It lives to die again! Nice job Eric!
I've done rocker arm work on that same side and boy it WAS A PAIN IN THE ARSE!
*sets it on a fire* "I dunno boss, was like that when it came in."
That looked very frustrating. Congrats not breaking any of those flimsy plastic bits.
That’s funny about the reverse rotation when starting a bolt, screw, or nut. You can’t beat that satisfying click when the threads mate up. 😎
That silicone lube you used looked like it would also prevent arcing.
Funny story, I have watched so many of Sir videos and I have picked up on his lexicon. Everything is “ the classic” and all of the other idioms. Love it, when I grow up I am gonna be just like big brother!
Hey. I hope to see that 2017 2500 heater core video in the future 🙏 🙌
I have to give you props Eric, that looked like a nightmare and you made it look bearable. I would have looked at it from a DIY vantage and tell my wife it was going to take a week.
That looked like it was a pain to work on, but you did it well as always love your work Eric…
Life of a auto mechanic/technician. You gotta love it or you won't last long in the business.
@@s.j.5850 If I can do it; he can do it far better
I've got new injectors on the way (#6 is bad - figured I'd just do them all since I've got to take it apart). I appreciate you doing this video. Makes my life easier.
The more challenging the job, the better the comedy! Map sensor….had me in stitches…😂 don’t fire your skit writer…!
Another benefit of WD-40, when rebuilding old mechanical car clocks, a thorough de-greasing of the mechanism, followed by careful application of WD-40 with a toothpick to each gear shaft, will restore that clock to factory performance for years to come. Assuming, of course that someone is smart enough to touch the battery terminal briefly to start the clock, etc. great video.
Hands down my favorite channel. Thank you sir.
Appreciate the video. Alot of mechanics when dealing with misfires on these 3.6 Jeep engines go right to the head gasket or warped head because of the older versions being so bad. These 2016- newer ones aren't as prone to those issues if taken care of. From what my tech said at the dealer the injectors go on these quite often. Good to see it on video. Been looking for one for a few days now. Thanks again.
Would love to see heater core on that one
Evening Eric👍, remember to take that tube of KY back home again!🤣🤣
Love your videos. Excellent transfer of knowledge
Loved the comment about engineers being a bunch of 3 year-olds with a box of crayons. Equally loved your MAP sensor discussion with Mrs. O toward the end of the video. Hope you are doing well! I'm told it gets better so Hang In There! ! ! ! !
Great repair! I very much liked putting all the wire bundles and hoses back in their brackets. And it sound really very smooth.
Now it needs an engine cover to put that cherry on top.
Things like reversing the bolt till you hear the click or feel it drop a bit so that you start to thread it in right is just something you learn after time. You learn something everyday.
Went back together way easier than it came apart. Motorcity Mechanic has a great video on dash removal on those Rams if you need it.
Eric has plenty of practice on them, like most of the folks who work on them.
@@Blazer02LS I'm sure he does. Post was meant for viewers
The 'Reverse Clicker' is also quite popular in the dental implant realm too. Affirms that the prosthesis is seated completely and the screw is ready to be torqued to spec.
An awesome, clean job. I'll be doing my wife's jeep injectors and plugs soon. In the beginning, you almost lost me when you fiddled around too much, but then I realized it was likely your first jeep so I stuck it out and I'm glad I did. Thanks man.
Eric excellent narration on this repair as always. Mrs O has such a wonderful disposition, if only my wife was as easy going but since she’s not I am happy for your good fortune. While working on a 3.6 do you peel down and look to see if there is oil pooling in the valley? I have my replacement oil cooler but haven’t installed it yet. It took 4-1/2 months to get a genuine Mopar part.
Why would anyone want a part from the OEM that fails so often? There are other options and they fail so often I currently have 3 sitting on the shelf. We've done 3 in the same day before.
@@Troy_Built they’ve been redesigned and every person I spoke to said the aftermarket ones are even worse.
@@clintprice2123 You can get metal ones on the aftermarket. We go through a lot of them. Lot like 3 on a single day last week. Never had a comeback on any brand and we keep 3 brands on the shelf including the OEM, Vemo and both Dormans plastic and metal. Most of our mechanics prefer the metal Dorman.
Crazy how similar this is to my vehicle. I have a 2019 Chrysler 300s with the pentastar 3.6 and it just hit 70k miles. Never had any issues until last week the engine light came on throwing po201 and po301 and po128 codes. Took it in for service and they replaced all six spark plugs, new injector in cylinder one and new gasket. 600$ later it’s running fine.
Always a great video Eric O. Yourself, Scanner Danner, Ivan and Keith are the only channels I watch and have learned so much about proper diagnostics. Keep up the awesome work. Note: I despise doing a heater core. I feel bad for ya. God bless you and your family today. Have a wonderful day Eric O...
You just do what you gotta do, Eric, and don't worry about Murphy. Cause I can say with complete certainty, Murphy is always hanging out at my place. I've developed quite the twitch because of it.
Hey Eric you do a great job keep up the great work and do what you do best and don’t worry about other comments
Had that exact problem on my Lexus. Would start fine and run smooth cold. Start it up outside the Supermarket and would misfire until it was shut down and cooled down . Wasn’t as frustrating to change as your Jeep there. Good work.
I live in New Zealand. Did I actually win a prize or is it a scam??
Anyone else remember the old jeeps with the I6? You could reach everything
I am new to your videos but everytime I watch them , I get all these little helpful tips and when I see your tool box, I am amazed!!! Love your videos because even if that is not what is wrong with my projects , I still get helpful tips!! I'm subscribed now!! i watch what ever i can !!!
my next project is a 2003 jeep liberty no start, but cranks good
Great job you make it look easy.
"Sometimes I think the engineers are a bunch of 3 year olds with a box of crayons" LMBO!....good one Eric!
