    I've read a theory recently that Carl actually passed away after losing his house, and how the floating house representing his ascending to heaven and how Russell is actually his gaurdian angel helping him get there, and is also supposed to be the child that Carl and Ellie lost. Also the badge ceremony at the end represents Russell"earning his wings".

      That actually makes a lot of sense. The character Carl is probably based off of a dead relative or friend of one of the writers, giving this story more meaning than what was originally intended.

    • @gabrielcorazza3594

      Altermaster13 Well, the video showing Muntz getting discredited is BEFORE he even MEETS Ellie so he cant have imagined that. His skepticism for the existence of Muntz is therefore weakened. Also, he CANNOT imagine the boy as the boy appears with badges and adventurous spirit BEFORE he goes to court which is what allegedly made him insane. As for the snipe's existence, its genitalia is undocumented as its an undiscovered species so a child who hasnt even hit puberty and doesnt know bird genitals mislabeling a birds sex would be VERY believable. Hell, Im 20 and I cant tell you most birds' sexes.
      As for the balloons, it would be impossible to animate that many millions of balloons. Keep in mind we are dealing with movies that have talking cars, bugs, tree spirits, and animals. Sometimes its not all EXACTLY realistic.
      Also, if we consider the movie to have come out as a documentary sometime after the actual events transpire and we can also reasonably assume that the car wasnt new that year and the poster could easily be an older one, the age of Muntz/his placement in time would be off. If you add 4 or 5 years, Muntz would be 13. Since he did do alot of collecting, his family is likely rich to allow him to do it at such a young age. This would explain political influence that allows him to be with Roosevelt, WHO btw, was a skilled politician would give a skeleton to a boy who found it to gain political influence. Roosevelt was always more interested in live game anyway.
      Thoughts?

    I have a problem with this: if he really lost his mind and started to imagine people why not Ellie too? he´s crazy so his logic wouldn´t mind that she´s long dead. why have your child hero and not your beloved wife?

    • @SuperCarlinBrothers
      @SuperCarlinBrothers  9 років тому +252

      vbiiiizfik Well, i think, even crazy, he understands you cant bring back the dead. And so, instead of dreaming Ellie, he dreams Russel instead. Its not Ellie, but he as he stated in the video, he was probably dreaming Russel as the kid they never had, so, he had a part of Ellie.

    • @ellolove14
      @ellolove14 9 років тому +19

      vbiiiizfik If he were to imagine Ellie back, then he'd know it wasn't real, sort of. It isn't a dream, he thinks it's all happening. And her suddenly being alive is again is actually MORE unlikely than the adventures he goes on.

    • @ProfDragonVale
      @ProfDragonVale 9 років тому +23

      vbiiiizfik He knows Ellie is dead. By bringing her back, he's basically proving to himself this new Utopia is fake. So, by creating a creature who is Ellie-like, he still gets to live in paradise without and pain of loss what so ever.

    I've seen a few comments saying "It could've been FDR", which I initially thought as well, but then I remembered that FDR had polio and was in a wheelchair. I'd have to rewatch that scene to make sure there isn't anything to disprove it, but I think ALICE Roosevelt would be a good candidate. Alice was the daughter of Teddy Roosevelt, and she lived a very...scandalous life. She gambled, smoke, and did a lot of "unladylike" things. I feel like she might've been into going on safari, like her father, and playing gin rummy. (I suppose Kermit Roosevelt, her brother, is also a likely possibility, considering he actually went on safari with Teddy, but I find the idea of the Roosevelt being Alice particularly amusing).

    Well, i had a thought that I don't think anyone has discussed yet. Possibly Andy's dad was a sheriff or some important military figure who died in action. This explains why Andy's dad is not seen in Toy Story and how he died. Because Andy and Carl are related, Andy's dad pulled some strings using his important status to let Carl go free of charge. i haven't fully thought any possible plot holes, so if anyone would like to pitch in that be great. ;D
    Also, his dad's position may also have some influence on Andy's childhood preference towards crime fighters i.e. Woody and Buzz.

I mean, there is no picture, medal, memories, like nothing at all. Unless Andy's family is really weird, I don't think they would have any reasons to not keep any memories of him, unless if he wasn't a good person at all...

    My theory about Up:
    Basically, I hold that everything fantastical in this movie happened only in Carl's mind, starting at the point he lifted up his house with balloons. Let's take some points.
    - The movie Carl is watching in the beginning is clearly an adventure movie. It has a sensationalistic narration with a captivating storytelling. It doesn't sound like a documentary as it is superficially implied. Also, what kind of cinema shows documentary movies, especially talking about old black-and-white cinemas? It is no sin to say that it has all the elements of a film telling a fictional story. That's my first point: Charles Muntz is a fictional character, and Paradise Falls is a fictional setting of his adventures. He is no real explorer visiting a real (even though legendary) place. His airship, his rejection by the academia and everything else are just parts of a movie's fictional plot.
    - Carl and Ellie, consequently, would still had a common childhood hero, but a fictional hero. Perhaps they believed it was all real in their childhood, but when grown up they realized it wasn't. This didn't change their dreams much. Let's say: you don't need to actually believe a fictional saga is real to be truly fanatic about it; we got many well-known examples out there.
    - At the end, it is revealed that at the previously blank pages in Ellie's Adventure Book reserved for her adventures in Paradise Falls, she registered instead her marriage with Carl, turning it into a photo album. The album contains a note saying Carl must live a new adventure, what reinvigorates him in the final scenes. This further suggests not only that they knew everything was fictional, but that they tried to live their lives into this fantasy.
    - Ellie and Muntz' adventures was all Carl lived for. Moving to the retirement home, consequently, would mean that his life is over. But as it is shown, there's nothing he can do to avoid that.
    With this, it may be that when Carl saw his life finally getting to an end with everything being lost, he fell into a reverie before he could definitely immerse into this last, sorrowful stage of his life. Everything happened in his mind in the fashion of his childhood fantasies, but without Ellie's presence. Also important is that his bad thoughts managed to manifest through this reverie. What I interpret of this:
    - The fact Carl lifted his house with the balloons he used to sell when he worked with Ellie is the first step of his reverie: he gets away from his problems and floats calmly through the sky, remembering of his beloved wife.
    - Russell is Carl's picture of what his son would be: an innocent, mannered little boy. Carl is reluctant about him at first, but eventually shows to care about him as a father.
    - Finally, Paradise Falls and Charles Muntz as appearing in the film would be Carl's imagination of this childhood fantasy, being gradually consumed by sadness and darkness, as his hero is revealed to be a sickly villain and everything loses all the meaning. This represents his confront with the reality awaiting him, which he just remembered.
    - In the final scenes, Carl manages to forget most of his old past in order to happily live the last stage of his life. He does so by defeating Muntz and accepting that his home is now gone after landing on the Falls and fulfilling his promise. However, he takes some bits of his adventures with him: Russell, Doug and the other dogs, and the Spirit of Adventures.
    And that's it. Up is basically a movie about an old man's fight against his final fate by reflecting about the good and bad moments and dreams of his life.

    Wait a sec, if Ellie was heartbroken over her inability to carry a child, doesn't that mean she wanted one in the first place? (I only ask this to prove a point) And if she so wanted to have a kid, why didn't she and Carl just get a surrogate or adopt or something? Wouldn't that make more sense than just giving up and saying "Well, since we can't have a biological child, I guess we won't have one at all...Let's start saving up for a trip to South America instead!"...?

    • @Masqueradia
      @Masqueradia 9 років тому +5

      Masqueradia Muntz is supposed to be unbelievable. He's a LIAR. He's one of the old washed up adventurers who wants people to think he is still in his glory days. Old men exaggerate themselves all the time. it's called a fishtale. Your followers (namely, the kids) don't usually ask too many questions about it until it's too little too late and they've spent their entire lives believing some poor toothless lion's bs. He WANTS to be impressive. He's the opposite of Carl, who was more interested in actually going on an adventure to fulfill his lifelong dream in solitude, Muntz wants to project into history that this is all HIS doing, His Glory, His brilliance. It's why he's the perfect antagonist for Carl.

    I once wrote a theory about how Carl is actually dying and Russel is leading him to heaven. He has to give up a lot to go UP! He loses his house on his journey. What if his childhood hero is actually Satan and he bumps into him on his way to the after life. In the beginning of the movie we see a replaying of Carl's life. It is sad that in the last 7 minutes or so of your life your brain will replay all of the moments (or important) moments of your life. What if the beginning where we see his past is those 7 minutes.

FDR was born in 1882 and died in 1945, and seeing as Muntz was born in 1911, (estimated) he would have been totally able to play gin rummy with FDR seeing as he was president between 1933 and 1945, so Muntz would have been 22 and the poster being dated December 1933, I think it is safe to say that Muntz isn't b.s.ing the audience and Carl in this case

    I think Carl actually was more hurt from his fall in the original house in one of the first scenes with the balloon. maybe he got put into a coma or something and literally just imagined his whole life in front of him. it makes since because it would be life a dream where almost everything good goes your way, than his health in the coma gets worse and makes a turn for the worse, losing his wife, house, and freedom. it might sound extreme but I just started a theory and a fall 2 stories could make you go possibly in a coma.

    I'm intrigued by the whole " Up was Carl's fantasy" thing, but if its true I don't think Carl was necessarily sent to jail. We know that Carl was dead set on staying in his home, not wanting to sell. The company couldn't do much about it, and all they could do was offer as much money as they could. But when Carl hit their worker, the company saw their chance to get him off for good.
    Sure, the trial might have started with the threat of jail time, but that wouldn't be any good for the company. Carl would still be able to keep his home and property if he was sent to prison. By sending Carl to a retirement home instead, Carl would be forced to sell his house to the company (for much less than they had offered) and would be out of their hair.
    Now a retirement home doesn't seem like such a scary place to us. However, to a man who wanted to live a life full of adventure and freedom, a retirement home might as well be a prison. Its basically a place you go when you can't take care of yourself and when your time on earth his ending, something I think Carl fears a whole lot in the beginning of the film.

    Assault is a petty crime. There's just no way he *wouldn't* just get to go home after sentencing. Heck, even repeat offenders wouldn't be sentenced to jailtime for it, unless they'd been there several times already. As a crime, it's barely one step above "I stole a candy bar", and multiple steps below "I stole a TV".

    I actually see carl's journey as him making his way to heaven. The man lived a hard and more than disappointing life; from no child to no more wife, he deserved a balloon/house ride into a place he felt happy and calm. without getting too technical, i think this is a more satisfying theory and gives the story a more beautiful meaning weather it be true or not.

I believe that Shackleton is the street address, not the town because clearly Bloomington is the name of the town that Carl and Ellie met each other and grew up together in.

  • @williamgooch1006

About people asking about the Pixar Theory, I think having Carl be one crazy old man doesn't punch a hole through the entire thing--talking dog collars and the like could actually have been invented in Carl's time, and he could just be incorporating those into his fantasies as the human mind is prone to do.

    I I'm in between think about it, Charles hanged with Roosevelt when 8? What if he time traveled though and possibly even helped Boo find Sully [Monsters Inc.] and I believe he could've timed traveled and stayed on the forest because first, he could've found that bird a long time ago. With the technology he holds upon his dogs talking? I mean he could've gone any time to get his technology I don't believe there is capability of him randomly finding any source to make those collars. And those skeletons he has when he realized Carl's lying about Kevin. He could've killed those people not to take the bird so he couldn't go back and also not show himself again I doubt he wanted to go back and spend his time rather time traveling leading again how Boo found Sully in the end of Monsters Inc. [he could've been having an act the whole time tho in the movie but highly doubt that].

    The ZIP Code can give us a clue as to where it is. The ZIP Code 67913 isn't in use. However, if it was in use, it would be near Liberal, Kansas. The first three digits in ZIP Codes represent a central postal facility where mail is sorted and sent to the individual post offices. In rural areas, the digits 01 are then assigned to the central post office in the largest city, and other ZIP Codes are assigned roughly alphabetically. (In urban areas, they just skip assigning the central post office as 01, and just go roughly alphabetically). ZIP Code 67901 is assigned to Liberal, Kansas in the southwest corner of the state, so 67913 would be nearby to facilitate mail delivery.

      +Syn~ I advocate the "Andy's family is related to them" theory, but I think Ellie is Emma Jean's sister, and Emma Jean is Andy's grandmother. This would go further into cementing Emily as Andy's mother, because it helps fill in/reduce age gaps, and the name "Emily" is similar enough to "Emma" to be a feminine twist on the male tradition of naming a first son "Blank-Blank-Last Name-Junior." Emma Jean feels sorry for her sister because she can't have children, and sends Emily to visit for a few weeks every year. This goes along with the "we" in the "We are having a wonderful time!" If we accept this theory, we can then conclude Carl and Ellie are like another set of "grandparents" to Andy. Now that the relationship is established, how does this explain Carl being crazy? What if it was sent AFTER Ellie died, and Carl had already gone crazy? In reality, the postcard is addressed ONLY to Carl, and he subconsciously puts Ellie's name there? To further this theory, the rest of the address has to be considered, what if "18 Shackleton" is the room number and name of the prison psych ward Carl was placed in? "Bloomington, P.D." is the final piece of that puzzle, although we are still lacking a state, but more on that in a bit. Your next question being "How does Andy get the postcard?" I'm going to shock you: Carl died before "Toy Story 3," and Andy kept it because he saw his grandmother's name on it, and possibly was from the last vacation they went on together with his dad. Going back to the "Bloomington P. D.," there is a "Bloomington, MN." That's right, I just added "Inside Out" to this mess. I blew my own mind with that one. - Knightsaysni

      +OMG ITS A LLAMA I advocate the "Andy's family is related to them" theory, but I think Ellie is Emma Jean's sister, and Emma Jean is Andy's grandmother.

    Not to mention he talks to his house like she’s his dead wife. In the move russle uses this to his advantage to persuade him to keep Kevin.
    And Carl isn’t denying Elle said that. The crazy thing is, he looks up at his house and says “but I told him no!” Like he’s the tough strick parent.
    Not to mention of Elle was alive she would argue with him about keeping the bird or not, so maybe it’s his way of coping with her death and keeping himself from going COMPLETELY insane with grief.
    There’s also a theory I can make to go with this. Is this Carl’s mind helping him get over Elle? And move on?

    I have so many arguments about this video, however this "rant" is just my opinion. First up, the questions at 1:44 with the punishment. Yes, he does go there because he assaulted someone, but at that point he has nothing left. Ellie died, and he doesn't want anyone touching or moving his house. Also, the court may have a rule on a specific age they can put people in jail, and out of everything bad he could have done, that's the only thing as we the audience knows, except for maybe swearing. (There was a "swear" jar in the beginning of the movie when Ellie was alive and they had to use it for their car {See the Marriage of Carl and Ellie}.) Second, it's Pixar. Like most of the people who commented in the "towel section" say that Pixar do some crazy stuff, and I agree. At 3:00, with where Carl wanted to go, he didn't know until he hit the ground. Once looking out the window, there was just the sun, house with balloons, and clouds. Plus, he could have ended anywhere but Paradise Falls. Ellie planned to go there, and Carl promised that he would take her. He never thought about going. (Beginning where she's in his room and telling him where she got the picture.) With the badges that belong to Russell, what if they were a real thing in the movie? Russell couldn't have been his dream child because how could Russell have really dark hair when neither Ellie or Carl had what looked like brownish colored hair? With Kevin, his feathers could have been a coincidence, and she may have had a spouse then before Carl and Russel came to the Falls. With the Charles Muntz thing, its another non-realistic thing. Yes, people meet their idols, but with the ages of Carl and Charles, that can't be done. Before meeting Ellie, there was a video on Charles telling the audience in the film what he was like. Of course throughout the years, it could have been different, but sometimes people don't change. A lot of people live in the wild so they can get away from the "boring" life. The things that Muntz has and as to why he has so many is because he could have been an architect who found those bones. The Roosevelt thing could have been because old people could can have their information wrong, or maybe Roosevelt came across Charles when he was a kid and maybe became apart of Teddy's family. Stuff like that can happen, resulting to how Charles could have maybe received the Leopard Turtle and the blimp. Think about it!!! Finally, going back to the postcard, Pixar may have just made up a place in the USA. Why? Maybe there's another policy where they cannot use real addresses in movies, just to make sure that if it actually was, someone couldn't go to that house knocking on the door. And that is it! Again this is just my opinion, and I am NOT arguing that any of this information in this UA-cam video is or is not real. That is all I have to say. :) PS- If Carl was crazy, he wouldn't be behind bars. He would in an asylum.

      Why Carl?

  • @9jettube
    @9jettube 8 років тому +14

    Nope. Carl is not crazy, and there are several reasons why. First of all, P.D. is an easter egg that stands for Pete Doctor. Second of all, the postcard appears in Andy's room in Toy Story 3. Why would Andy have the postcard of a crazy old man rotting in prison? Thirdly, The post card says, "We are having a swell time. Wish you were here!" If that card was sent from a prison, why would it say that? Fourthly, Muntz is probably the crazy one. I mean, come on! That makes much more sense! He scribbled all over his maps and is obsessed with a bird! The bonus features on the Blu-Ray/DVD literally stated that Muntz's air ship was like his mind, it gots darker as they went deeper. No wonder he hasn't got his facts strait! Also, Muntz was able to live longer thanks to Kenvin's eggs so... yeah...
    Lastly, and most importantly, Carl's house was able to float because of magic. No joke. If you believe the Pixar Theory (which, if you're reading this, you probably do) you hopefully know that magic, or something similar to magic, as existed throughout the Pixar Timeline. And what is one of the most important ingredients for there to be magic in the Pixar Universe? Wood! Carl's house is made almost entirely out of wood! He might have got the idea to fly his house with balloons thanks, in part, to all the time he spent with WOOD! So no, Carl has not lost all of his marbles, he's just eccentric because of wood. Game Set Match ;)

      fletcherjeff55 Rockerdude17 I can totally see where you guys are coming from, we by no means want to take away from the enjoyment of the films and are really just super fans who like discuss different possibilities - They may seem nitpicky but what I love about Pixar is how detailed they are about everything, because its so precisely animated they have to make decisions about every little thing, like the date on the magazine or what address Carl will have. Their reasons could be totally random, but with the amount of intentional easter eggs in their movies its hard to think there is no meaning behind some of their details. When we do a theory vid like this we like to have as much evidence as possible so it doesnt come off like a Creepy Pasta post which often feel like mostly conjecture - but hey its just a theory!

    I think that Paradise Falls is sort of like the lost world, time moves differently there. Remember Charles Muntz had specimens of what looked like giant sloths and extinct prehistoric mammals, and even Kevin looks like a prehistoric bird. This explains why Charles Muntz is almost the same age as Carl. Time has moved differently there. And remember that they even say it's "a land lost in time". This even explains why there is a storm barrier surounding paradise falls, and a mysterious mist, yet when you land there the sky is blue. Its also based off of angel falls in Venezuela, where they filmed the lost world. But hey, thats just a theory.. a film theory.

Carl was for Russell what his M.I.A. father was not, encouraging, and Russel was for Carl what his M.I.A. family was, caring. In many ways if the entire "adventure" were imagines, the ending had to have that depth for me.

      Justin Ballinger Well, the video showing Muntz getting discredited is BEFORE he even MEETS Ellie so he cant have imagined that.
      As for Shackleton, there are MANY Shackletons in the US. Also, if he was insane, explain why Ellie didnt come back or why he encountered so much hardship to get where he wanted to go. So many things could have gone so much better for him if he was insane but didnt.
      I am unconvinced by the evidence.
      Thoughts?

      +Justin Ballinger The big shortcoming is that it's an easier assumption to say that Carl went to the Assisted Living Facility, they overdosed him on something because of the violent outburst (happens a lot believe it or not), Russell either found out that the crazy man went to the home or was visiting with his troop and found Carl. Russell, or his parent, or his troop leader points out the over-medicated man and they tone it down, but the end of the movie Carl's still in the home but the meds are gone and Russell's allowed to take him out for a while. Even easier is to just say Assisted Living Facility with Dementia, and it's even possibly what they were going for.
