Yes the chalk helps prevent file loading, it acts as a lube. In combination with that, if you take a Sharpie or El Marko and "paint" the surfaces of what your are filing you can see exactly where your file "strokes" have been. Thank you!

I was thinkin' about the marker technique while watching the video. Also, if the file is already used, stroke the chalk in the same direction as (parallel to) the cut of the teeth and work all the way across the surface with as many strokes as necessary. This has the added benefit of pushing out any pins that previously resided in the teeth while you chalk it up.
Just what I was looking for. Bought a set of Warrior spade bits from Harbor Freight and used a middle sized one to drill about 6 holes in a small oak tree stump/root so that I could pour some stump killer in them and the first one or two holes seemed to go fairly quick but after that things got a bit slower. I don't know if it's because of the quality of the steel or if I was getting into harder parts of the root but I knew after that that I needed to know if and how to sharpen them. Looks simple enough to not be intimidating.

The thing I love most about this channel is the practicality of the tips given. While other woodworking and handyman channels are showing how to build drill-powered walking dinosaurs, Leah is showing how to do incredibly useful things! Great channel.

i was drilling a bunch of dog holes and my 3/4" paddle bit just quit cutting after I was trying to muscle through. Then I thought, "I bet Leah has something to say about sharpening paddle bits, and sure enough she did. My only regret was not watching the video before I started drilling, because once I sharpened it, boom-da-bing, that project pretty much finished itself. Now I'm going to sharpen up the whole set. Thanks, Leah.
I might not be the sharpest light bulb in the knife drawer... but I never thought I couldn't sharpen a spade bit... It just *never* occurred to me! Since I don't use spade bits that often I'm embarrassed to say they sit in my drill bit drawer and have all rusted, and worse part of it is that they go back to 1980's... heck, they're old enough to drink and drive, just not at the same time mind you... So yeah... they still work, kind of.. so either I can try to clean them up and sharpen them or just get new bits... So I'm saying: "I can do this"... but just not now 😁 (excuse: Lazy)

From my experience I have noticed like with older tools the quality of the steel on new bits is not as good as older bits. Now I can sharpen my favorite oldies! You rock Leah!!

The info about the chalk is sweet considering I am always using files on saw blades, chainsaws, and many lawn tools. Can't wait to try it out.
My drill was cooking so I checked and had no bevel. Then used your hands as a reference and cut new bevels. Now its plowing through like I bought a new one. Thanks.

Nice... I got an old set of bits from my father who passed away recently.... His 1inch paddle bit produced more smoke than chips... I did what you did but, I also had to knock down burrs on the backside. Now it cuts like wood like butter! Thanks!

I had an outdoor space in my last apt. I turned it into a container garden. I used these drill bits all the time to drill holes on the bottom of my wood containers for drainage. I used the bits with a hammer drill. I miss my garden and I miss my power tools. I had no idea you could sharpen the bits. Thank you for this video, Jane!
Leah, why you don't have your own TV show yet is baffling. You're just pleasant to learn from.
Knew they could be sharpened, but the chalk trick is new to me. I'm a locksmith, and have been getting a lot of people wanting keys for antique mortise locks the past couple months. I've been doing a lot of hand filing and constantly cleaning the files with a brush. So thank you very much!
In addition to working the bevel, remember that the surface intersecting the bevel is also part of the cutting edge. The "flat" on the reverse side of the bevel may have dings in it; the flat is a lot easier to file down. In fact, if you only file the flat, you often improve the performance with rather easy filing.

Great video Leah. I sharpen both spade a d frostner bits make sure you sharpen both side evenly because if you take more off one side than the other only the higher side will cut.
