My biggest struggles are building soil (which is easy to overcome with the right mindset) and the much harder task of getting my family to eat things that aren't at the grocery store. I will succeed!
I build soil with tons of biomass. We have gotten the family to eat the good stuff by making it taste like what they're used to, Kelly has gotten very good at that!
If you plant plants that like sand you dont have to worry about building soil , which actually isn't great here cus nutrient run off in the waterways. There are so many that dont require rich soil or much water .. once those plants come in you can start using them to create shade and suatainable biomass by chop n dropping them . Once you start eating fresh food, grocery store stuff starts tasting like . cardboard ..
Make sure your soil is covered. A naked soil means loss of energy (plants take it from the sun and add nitrogen) and loss of nutrients from being washed out by rain. Also, it means less biological activity.
Wow! I listened to your story on how sick you were and I can completely relate. Spent 8 years taking Prilosec, Zantac etc. for GERD. Doctors gave up and told me I would get throat cancer. Moved to Florida and went completely organic vegan. In 3 months I was off all meds. In 2 years I was completely healed. I love your food forest, absolutely beautiful. I now have a food forest in my tiny backyard.
I'm in South Florida myself. I also was in the hospital at one time wondering if I was ever gonna be able to go home to my family again. Long story short I'm heading towards plant based food. No more sugar is the hardest for me but it's life or death. I choose life. I have a long road ahead but I'm working on my farm every day. I liked and subscribed great channel.
Super inspirational! I started off in The Florida Native Plant Society. That morphed into foraging and what's edible. That morphed into, "holy shit, Big Ag and Big Pharma are killing us!" Love that you took control and are figuring it out. Can't wait to visit this farm!!!
The FDA is also killing us with their lax guidelines on the chemical additive/preservative filler agents, as well as their lax guidelines on pesticides/herbicides. 75% of the chemicals that the EU banned have actually been proven to cause significant harm to our bodies, especially if they are not used/measured properly. Also, the reason for the obesity crisis isn’t the lack of exercise, but is instead the fact that heavily processed foods/non-organic foods are much less expensive than non-heavily processed/organic foods (such as Oscar-Mayer). Many artificial hormones, pesticides, and herbicides (such as RoundUp and RBST) are also known to be extremely dangerous to human health, yet are widely used still since they are the least expensive option. Finally, fast food should be a treat and not a reliance.
Hello from Tampa Florida. I love your videos - one thing I think would be awesome is please put the name of the plants on the video - guaranteed it's going to be a great help for us - specially does that do English as a second language. Thanks and many many blessings to you and your family.😊
Super cool guy. Got the whole puzzle figured out. Mycelium, plants and can do actitud. Good luck with the burn barrel tropic circle. Florida fruit geek has some incredible mulberries, fruit the size of your fingers I would recommend.
Looking forward to check out this farm since it's super close. That was the most inspiring food forest video I've ever watched.. and I've seen a shit load. Kept me watching til the end. Love his purpose and story. I am 2 years deep with my .24 acre lot food forest in Ocala in the suburbs. It is sooo satisfying to grow and eat your own abundance of food, even though I've learned to kill plants too 😂!! Thank you guys for shining light on what is truly important; Our health.
Very good video! Lonnie is very knowledgeable and inspiring. You have made me want to visit his farm and see what edibles he has for sale. You're doing great with your channel. I wish you much success.
Hi from NZ .Im growing a strawberry fig and a Christmas plum handed down through quite a few generations. It’s pretty awesome having a connection like that , especially when you can hand them on to the next generation !
Awesome farm & family! Visited, toured, tasted and bought plants to grow in our lil temp garden area. (Including night blooming jasmine!!) Thanks Kelly - you’re a phenomenal hostess!! 🌱💚👍
Moved up to Weirsdale, six years ago to live on top of a pile of white sand and immediately tried to build a good soil base in which to grow stuff I had grown down in North Miami Beach . Flag down a bunch of tree trimmers with oak chips and had them dump the chips in a pile on the property and hide the chickens dig on them and spread them around pretty good . Lots of millipedes. Also, the chips helped build an awesome soil base micro rhizomes among other things I’ll kinds of mushrooms, currently growing figs, pomegranates, bananas, but the cold snaps are a killer.
Love this! Your view on it's ok to kill stuff as you learn has been exactly my motto for past couple years as I've been transforming my small yard into food ... started out with a higher dead vs living ratio and now I've improved to a much higher living to dead ratio, I'd say 80% (or more) survival rate . It's definitely a learn as you go process ... and very rewarding if you can shrug off the losses and just keep going. 😊👍
In regards to 46:13 while I was healing my stomach, salad greens caused me problems. I could eat salad greens by themselves just fine, but if I had any other type of food within a couple hours, I would get a stomach ache. Now I can, but at the time, I couldn't have lettuce with anything else, whether that was avocado, chicken, or oranges. I did find that my stomach ache could be stopped within a half hour of eating a smoothie made from fresh pineapple, fresh cranberries (frozen should be just as good), and a clove of garlic.
I'm in Daytona, I was just thinking I need a barrel to burn to keep near my trees. I love you. You are my kinda crazy. MY TREES WILL NOT FREEZE or I'll freeze too lol
Very nice work! I am working on my 3 acre project and plan on adapting tropical plants to the Ocala climate. I will use several methods and found the burn barrels idea to be good.
@@floridafreeliving Yes I have several herbs but I’ve had an herb garden for as long as I can remember. It’s the trees that are tricky. My neighbor is supposed to be starting a Moringa tree for me because I haven’t been able to find one.
I learned there are certain figs that cannot be grown in Florida because they need a certain insect (I forgot which one) to pollinate, wasp I think. I was mystified to learn that 😊. Brown turkey IS for Florida! Also Chicago Hardy, I believe. I live in the Panhandle! Glad I found out before buying the wrong ones! Wonderful what you’ve accomplished!
If you’re looking for coffee grounds, Starbucks gives away free, used coffee grounds . Even went to the people that work at Publix and Winn-Dixie and asked for the cuttings they were throwing away from trimming fruit in the produce section.
Did you get tested for Celiac Disease, from what you’ve said it sounds like all the symptoms. My wife had the same problem and she only got better after diagnosis. If you haven’t been tested please do, it will change your life for the better.
My life changed for the better when I walked away from doctors and became my own doctor. Celiac is actually very rare, gluten has become the scapegoat for tge toxic chemicals loaded into the grain industry.
What do you do with your dragon fruit in the winter. I am tired of moving them and would love to create a permanent structure..I am a little north of your farm. Great idea about the Tithonia diversiflora planting around sensitive tropical fruit trees. I am so trying that around my avocados…I too would love a forest of mangoes and avocados….
Hello Great video. I am starting a food forest in south Florida. What was the name of that tree you ate leaves to help with kidneys and sleep. Where can I purchase one?
You know who shoved a miracle leaf in my face and made me eat it! Turns out I've had this growing in my yard for years and didn't know what it was until today. You would cry to know what went in the garbage!🤫🤭😣
Was there a particular plant that you feel has helped your Dad's kidney function or just the overall diet? I am currently growing most of what you are growing and I have a family member and a neighbor who could use kidney assistance with natural sources.

What an amazing story! My entire 1/8 acre lot is a food forest, but we mostly eat fruit from the yard so this is inspiring.
I have a 1/8 acre food forest as well. In Orlando Florida.

Hello

Brazilian tree trunk cherry, first fruit harvested in Germany, the fruit skin is a bit hard, tastes no better than conventional grapes.
rated you 5 stars on google !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is the most gangster shit on the planet ok
Hello, I bought a grafted wax apple tree 5 years ago and it still doesn’t have any fruits. Any advice you can give is greatly appreciated.
So many variables, it could be many things
Which bean is that? I'm growing Thai Soldier beans about 40 mins from this farm and they are doing this - just crazy!
Puerto rican black beans

Mulberry fruit after a good pruning
