  • I was having a very difficult time getting new speaker wire installed through the rubber grommet on the truck. Here is how I did it . Hopefully it will save you a little time and give you an idea of what you'll need. Installing new door speakers really isn't that difficult and just takes about an hour to do. You just need a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the door handle and then a large flat-head or something similar to wedge between the door and door panel to pop the connectors out. Then I just needed a small drill bit to drill new holes for the new Pioneer speakers. Depending on what speakers you buy, you may not need to drill new holes. Feel free to leave any questions below and I'll be glad to answer them. Thanks

I ended up installing some old MTX speaker boxes behind the seats that I've had for over 30 years. I bought replacement subwoofers for them and they put out some decent sound. I also added a small amp to push them. So it depends on how much sound you want. When I finally got the little Pioneers installed in the doors, they just sounded very "tinny" and had no bass at all. My suggestion, if you decided to just go with door speakers, is to get you a small, 4 channel amplifier to push them. The radio is "adequate" to power the door speakers but a nice little amplifier will really wake them up. Amplifiers these days are really cheap and you can even find them at Wal Mart for a steal. I may do a video soon of how I hooked everything up in my truck. It's really pretty simple.

@@Angel-gs3oc here's a link for a Rockville amp. I have 3 of their amps and have never had an issue with one. Been running them for about 8 years. Find you a good set of speakers and you should be under budget. 👌

Probably is. I ordered mine based on the size of the hole but you that's not how these speakers are sold, they are sized by the overall diameter of the entire speaker. I ended up installing MTX truck speakers behind the seats so now I can't even hear the door speakers. 😂

How did you wire your head unit?

Wiring the head unit is actually pretty easy. Only takes 3 wires to power the radio up. First, get you a simple test light, one that lights up. Find the wire behind the dash that lights up without the key on. That is your constant power and will usually hook up to the yellow wire on your radio harness. Next, turn the key on in the truck and find the wire that has power. To be sure, cut the truck off and see if the test light goes out. If it does, that's your switched power source. That will go to the red wire on your radio harness. The third wire is your black, which is for ground. Find a nice, clean piece of metal, which should be hard, to attach that to. I usually look for an existing screw under the dash, loosen it up and connect to that. Then it's just a matter of hooking up the positive and negative speaker wires, which should be fairly easy. Good luck!
