The Ken Burns documentary is American history at it's best. As a teenager I recall My mum and I sobbing when they talked about Lewis' death. I argued (convincingly) that their journey was the beginning of the American West in College based on Burns' work. This summer I stood on the Pacific coast where Lewis and Clark landed with my son all because of Ken Burns. "We proceeded on" indeed.
That's beautiful. I've stood at the marker at Grinders Stand and sobbed like I actually knew Capt Lewis...people thought I was nuts. Lol. My family was in and around Monticello before they migrated to KY......they were neighbors and knew the Lewis's. Even intermarried and witnessed each others wills.
We had an absolutely great trip. The Voyage of Discovery was the Greatest adventure ever. One trip is not enough. Need about 3 months, we plan on going back. Freedom is a precious gift
My thoughts on Lewis ‘disorder’ is that it was caused by some of the minerals and chemicals that he actually tasted, trying out for the sake of experimentation. In the Journal at the beginning, doesn’t Clark talk about Lewis tasting and testing? I mean we know about poisonings like mercury etc and how it can affect the brain … perhaps his serious depression was due to that somewhat.
His bouts with depression were a lifelong battle, so unless he had been snorting those chemicals and minerals from infancy, I doubt they had any long termed effects on him.
Um .. they discovered nothing. It was already there, inhabited by generations of people. Isn’t that interesting? I’m fascinated by this dystopia of illusion perpetrated by the group. Lewis and Clarke didn’t go on a voyage of discovery. They went on a journey through inhabited lands. So we should say that.

The predecessor to this film is a book by Stephen Ambrose called “Undaunted Courage”. It is well worth the reading.
A must-read for anyone wanting to learn more about American history.
Thanks Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan, we plan a trip this coming summer. I will be 70 in May, now is the time.
Hey, did you go on the trip?
How was the trip? Did you make it back alive?

@@gitterbugg679 If you can, go to Harper's Ferry first, it is the starting point of their journey
The finest production on history I have ever seen. Brilliant!
Ken burns civil war series is also incredible.

Dayton and Ken are national treasures.

"The single most enchanting place on the trip" from 1804 to 1806, starts around 18:18. You can only get there by canoe... Marvelous!
Truly enjoyed watching it.
I'm shocked only 3 comments are posted. Incredible story. Movie? I think it would be awesome!
Ken Burns's English pronunciation's very comfortable for me, Japanese to listen. :)
Indeed.
A Ken Burns' interview without folksy violin? I am gobsmaked.

How come Ken never defends America and our history ?
sac aa guh wee uh
16:17 sacagawawa
Suh cawga wee uh is the proper pronounciation
Ken Burns is like the white Spike Lee...like Gutfeld...feet cannot reach the floor...

And they recorded and mapped it, probably like the Romans did Britain, but the British aren't feigning offence.
