@J B I know he had some plagiarism but don't be so quick to judge the man. We all make mistakes. His accomplishments far outweighed his failures. Band of brothers was a master piece.
I've heard lots of opinions on Ambrose. Personally, I enjoy his writing and the passion that comes through. It's contagious. All historians and writers have opinions. You have to be able to form your own conclusions and differentiate fact from strongly asserted inclinations or even outright assumptions.
Unless you cherry pick your sources and fudge facts to fit your opinion, which is what Ambrose did. SA became part of the history factory. He was driven by selling books and then getting his movie royalties.
@@JB-uv4hm I have to plead ignorance on the subject. I just haven't done the research. I do know I read a book of his...a coffee table book... which spurred in me a real excitement. It tapped my maple syrup. And I'm not even a sugar maple! Bad metaphor. As far as Ambrose goes. We're all human and I can see that he is a very zealous guy. These types of men often DO overlook some of that "small stuff" in the name of "whatever the Hell that particular quest is." That's why I tend to take everything I read or that was EVER handed to me with a grain of salt. It doesn't make it useless, though. Again, I have no clue about Ambrose.
@@JB-uv4hm I would be interested in knowing... What facts in particular did he cherry pick or fudge? I mean... I find it hard to believe he would purposefully perpetuate blatant falsehoods. His zeal for the subject matter just doesn't allow me to consider that a posibility. It seems unlikely. Not impossible. But unlikely. As far as cherry picking facts? That's a very broad accusation. Often times historians have to string what facts they DO have into a loose framework of a narrative and then fill in the blanks. Obviously that's where things get messy. And obviously no one was alive then who is alive now, so one man's fact is another man's fudged up fact. The fact of the matter is....there are no facts. Not really. Just interpreted evidence and... That's some good history right there, I tell you what!!!! I do find it plausible, in fact I find it likely, that ANYONE is capable of getting a little sloppy and then justifying it to themselves in one way or another when a fat paycheck, as it were, is at stake. No matter how scholarly their convictions are or were. But that IS a heavy charge. That's why I tend to assume the worst when it comes to anyone.... Well, not the worst. But I tend to assume that overall, no one's "convictions" or highminded ideals overshadow their sex drive, pride, and greed. And even laziness. These are just basic human traits. I don't put people on pedestals, is all. And when people DO rise to the occassion I still don't put them on a pedestal that they most likely didn't ask for or want. I'll shut up now.
I recall my reaction the first time I read this book when Lewis killed himself. It was just like Ambrose's reaction. That is a testament to the power of his writing.
16:30 - *burps loudly and proudly* Correction, sir! I was reading a book of his...the good Mr. Ambrose...this morning. A great book, btw. Anyway! In regards to Private Collins, the rowdy dowdy strapping young rascal who tapped the whiskey barrel (not Willard) and then coeerced his pal and fellow sentinel-on-duty, Private Hall, to partake in the crime. He plead "not guilty" and received 100 lashed well laid on. One time. "We have found the men very ready to punish such crimes," Clark noted. Hall plead guilty and got 50. Private Alexander Willard FELL ASLEEP at his post on the night of July 11-12, a crime punishable by death. They administered 100 lashes for 4 consecutive nights. Ouch.
I feel that Mr. Ambrose would have been both fascinated and impressed with the leadership of President Trump. It's too bad he's not alive to witness this history in the making.

The history simpleton where there needs to be a hero. Whatever it takes to sell a book was Ambrose’s mantra. Btw, Lewis and Clark’s Exp was a big failure. They were bad geographers, ethnographers and record keepers. To say their ‘training’ was better than an astronaut is ridiculous. That Jefferson gave them an education better than a graduate student today is, again, ridiculous. Buffalo ranged east of the Mississippi, settlers saw them in 1700’s. The Missouri eco system didn’t disappear after L & C went by. More docs coming to light? One could go on and on, he is just one hyperbole after another.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I absolutely loved Mr Ambrose and his work. Thank you so very much.
Still one of the best non fiction book i have read. The whole story of the Corp Of Discovery is truly fascinating.
If only he had lived 80 more years
I can take a nap hearing this man talk and that's good
Truly an amazing man and historian. It should be mandatory to read his books in schools.
He was a fraud.

Did anyone of the easy company officers made it to general?
Why Powell? damn..
Erik...when THIS interview was done Colin Powell had NOT YET REVEALED HIS TRUE LACK OF CHARACTER
Colin Powell lied about and covered up My Lai!

Author Peter Hoffer ("Past Imperfect") calls Ambrose a serial plagiarist and gives many side-by-side examples.

Be a hero. Piss on the ceiling.
Some critical thinking blow your wad?
You are as weak as your stream.
Let me guess, your GED is framed.
Narrow. YOU are not right.
books books, did he ever go to WAR
Lol, the book was NOT a "historical novel". It was indeed non-fiction history.
This guy was fairly dishonest
You either are or you are not.
Free of racism...boy, he missed the boat on that one...to bad he didn't live to 2020.
What racism?
He could not have predicted the racism of BLM.
@ Yes false narratives and corruption are ruining a once great country.
He backed too much the myth of WW2 as "good war".
