HYBRID SEED PRODUCTION BASICS

Myself Vijay Kumar Shrivastav completed M.Sc. Agriculture (Agronomy) from G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar in 1996. The channel aims for supporting candidates preparing for various agricultural competitive examinations as IAS, PCS, MPSC, JPSC, BPSC, AFO, ICAR, forest exams, agricultural university examinations, state agricultural exams, JRF, SRF, ARS, Banking etc.

In present competitive age I would like to suggest completion of Post Graduation either M.Sc.Ag or Agri Business management for wide opportunities and growth in future. If you have plan for govt. job competitions as IAS, State PSC, banks, Forest dept , AO etc. than it may be OK. Presently B.Sc. Ag is at bottom level preference in private job also. In M.sc. Ag as per specialization of subjects there will be preference. Everyone starts career as a fresher, there will be little challenge in beginning but definitely success will come. It is possible to produce a new hybrid variety by pollinating inside two hybrid varieties?

But both hybrids are fertile, in case of Hybrid one line should be sterile. We can try only in crops like Maize where in female we can do detasseling to make one line sterile and in cotton one parent as female where emasculation can be done. It will need research about flowering behaviour of both parents for correct nicking and for yield compatibility of male restorer line. For hybrid there should be desired characters matching for heterosis.

Pls explain ,how CMS is used in maize for production of double cross hybrid.

In Maize hybrid seed production CMS lines are not in use on commercial scale. In stead of CMS lines detasseling process is followed to make female sterile. Trials are going on for use of CMS lines which will reduce pressure of labor for detasseling. Now CMS lines are not successful due to stability issues. Other side due to CMS induce lines are reported to become susceptible to diseases like blight etc causing reduction in yield level. Research work in progress which needs stability in CMS base to use on higher scale.

You can do only in crops where manual emasculation and pollination is done like Cotton, okra, tomato etc. In Corn/ Maize crop also can be done where detasseling is normal practice in female parent. After crossing two different F1 how the next cross product will behave that is the matter of study after observing performance which will depend on F1 used as Female and F1 used as male.
