I saw this tour in April 1991 in Pittsburgh, PA (Winger opened). Deep Purple were phenomenal and Ritchie was fantastic. The whole band was impressive!

As much as I idolize Gillan it’s a shame Joe didn’t get more time and a chance to do more with the band.

really great performance but this song is overplayed as hell. songs that are less overplayed on this tour that you dont see often are Burn and Knocking On Your Back Door and Hey Joe and King Of Dreams, for example, all still really popular. This is the only version of the band that encompasses every version Ritchie was ever in. Which at this point is 4/5 of them.

At the time Turner was better than Gillan.

it was not a good move for JOE to be part of PURPLE with an average album. it was anyway closer to the Classic sound more than has been during the last 30 years. FOREIGNER or BAD COMPANY would have been perfect for TURNER he is a great songwriter.

I love both but if I had to choose I choose Gillan for DP. JLT was great in Rainbow. The singer has to fit the band. Sabbath wasn’t a good fit for Gillan.

Ritchie Blackmore is absolutely positively one of the great guitarists who ever lived possibly one of the biggest dick heads who has ever walked planet earth at least that is what Ronnie James Dio,George Lynch,Eddie Van Halen and scores of other great artists think but then again Maybe are just jealous LOL.

The 3 years of JLT-fronted Deep Purple were artistically a catastrophe and commercially a flop.
DP was reduced to recording power ballads with a frontman who couldn’t shine Ian Gillian’s shoes lyrically and arrogantly insulted longtime fans resistant to his charms as “nostalgic fools who don’t realize it’s 1991.”)
Ironically, the album pandered to commerciality but was a resounding flop, charting well below the prior reunion albums (peaking at #45 in the UK & #87 in the US) and badly damaging DP’s credibility as a legendary, dynamic hard rock band.
RCA Records had signed the band in late 1988/early 1989 on the promise of the classic Mark II lineup of Blackmore/Gillan/Glover/Lord/Paice, only to end up with a band that was 3/5 Rainbow.
RCA ultimately refused to release the 2nd contracted LP unless JLT was shown the door & Ian Gillan were reinstated.
    Thankfully, he was.

Absolute bollocks. The album is artistically great bar one song and the tour was highly successful, not damaging the band's credibility at all. People ignore this album out of ignorance and bias.
Gillan was reinstated because Lord, Paice and Glover along with the record company forced it through. RCA lured the trio with CASH. Hence The Cattle Grazes On.
You say thankfully Gillan was back but he was ultimately hit and miss on the tour, as he was before the split. When they were on it was better than the HotBL tour but too much drinking and smoking ultimately held Ian back for a while. Luckily a few years into the Morse era he quit the over-indulgence and pulled himself together
