Nah, Earl. Canibus was exactly fitting of the highly skilled time he lived in, he was just lyrically superior to the field but the field was strong. It only seems he was ahead now because of how completely wack and devolved the rap game is now.

1998 was the year that save Def Jam. LL's Phenomenon album came out that year. Then Jay's Vol. 2 … Hard Knock Life, Redman's Doc's Da Name 2000, Method Man's Tical 2000 - Judgement Day, Belly Soundtrack, Rush Hour Soundtrack, DJ Clue's Professional & DMX's Flesh Of My Flesh, Blood Of My Blood along w the albums you mentioned saved that label from falling.

Listening to Canibus was a journey sometimes...the words that he was able to spit made me want to write complex raps, just like he did. At 1,000 degrees Celsius I make emcees melt. F my record label, I appear courtesy of myself... There are a few times in hip hop history where you have been so stunned by the 1st time hearing an artist, it's unforgettable. Meth did it. DMX did it. Even Snoop did it. None of these artists are the greatest ever, but they were so hot at their start you wouldn't have been shocked if they could've turned out to be. That's why to this day people can recall the buzz when they first heard Canibus. He was the guy you'd line up and wait for new material from. However, while it was true that he was blackballed, him having an album flop out of the gates made it that much easier. The arrogance of many exceptionally skilled artists is not realizing when they don't have needle moving tracks before a release. He's had some good songs, exceptional wordplay and a niche following. But that's not what he got in the game for. He wanted to sell and make millions. Team him with Black Thought, Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) and maybe Common. He'd be part of the greatest 4some in hip hop history and that crew would do some major numbers.

I liked Canibus, talentwise in his short prime, he was a respected lyricist but he self sabotaged his career. He burned many bridges with other artists.
He started out good in 97 when he was featured on a few underground tracks and became known for multisyllabic rap even though Big Pun, Chino XL, G Rap, and the entire Nexx Level/Rockboy Click had already made the style popular.
In the following year, he became known for starting a weird beef with LL Cool J over his ‘microphone’ arm tattoo. Great diss, but lost the war to LL because he ironically gave LL's career a boost while simultaneously f-ing his own up.
His first album “Can-I-Bus” was panned by the critics. The album was a flop.
Not acknowledging his own short-comings, he blamed Wyclef (who produced the album) for the failure.
Without Wyclef, he released his second album two years later. It was a failure too.
He then started an even weirder feud with Eminem by pretending to play the character of “Stan” (created by Eminem) in his own sequel “You Didn’t Care”. He even created his own all-white group called “C4” in a strange homage to Eminem’s all-black group “D12” who featured in his third album “C! True Hollywood Stories”.
After 9/11 he released the horridly racist and Islamophobic track “Draft Me” in which he rapped “Draft me, I wanna fight for my country, jump in a Humvee and murder those monkeys”.
He later signed up with the US Army stating “I enlisted because I wanted to get away from the music”. Two years later and without seeing any action, he was discharged for smoking marijuana. This was quite ironic since Canibus wanted to leave Hip-Hop to smoke Arabs but returned for smoking cannabis only to get bodied by an Arab-American…
…The Arab-American I’m referring to was Dizaster to whom Canibus shamefully lost his rap battle with after he pulled out a notepad of pre-written lyrics (even though it was supposed to be a freestyle). He also, at every opportunity whipped out old lines from old songs including the now tired “mic on my arm” lyric like some kind of bad joke…
And then over the years that followed, he completely destroyed any credibility and popularity he once had. Currently Canibus is about as relevant as the internet dial-up tone that played on the intro to his début album.

The term “sex slave” refers to what occurs today in terms of human trafficking, and this can be considered strictly prohibited in the Qur’an: “Do not compel your [slave] maidens to prostitution” (Q 24:33).
Sex slavery is significantly different than concubinage, which is a stable interpersonal relationship between a man and a woman. Some call this a “slave wife,” who however does not have the same legal rights as a wife.
The institution of slavery and concubinage existed throughout the world at the time of the Qur’anic revelation, and was not abolished anywhere until the modern period of history.
Although there is no explicit prohibition of slavery in the Qur’an, there are certainly a multitude of verses that call to the emancipation of slaves. Indeed, the Prophet Muhammad and the early Muslims sought converts from the slave class, and worked to free them from bondage. This fits with the Qur’an’s general emphasis on aiding the meek and dispossessed segments of society, which included the poor, weak, indebted, orphans, female infants, women, and slaves.
There is even a Qur’anic verse that says righteousness (al-birr) is not about turning your face in prayer to a certain direction, but rather-among other good deeds-to free slaves:
Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west [in prayer], but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in God, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves… (Q 2:177)

Love Canibus! Still listen to 2nd round KO almost daily while working out. Love RIP the Jacker album! But...he does sound kinda bitter & miserable about how things went down. He's 100% right that it could've went down a different way...unfortunately it didn't. LL Cool J took it too personal and made moves to "blacklist" Canibus. LL in my opinion is a somewhat of a cocky narcissist. He's been a super star since 16 yrs old and made Def Jam blow up. He's been an idol for thousands or millions of fans for almost 2 decades and then Canibus stole his Mic on his arm. 2nd Round KO was one of, if not, the hardest diss record ECER with Tyson on the intro! Canibus lyrically 'snuffed' LL and his ego was hurt. You know the saying "pick your battles"... Canibus was a cocky battle rapper who destroyed LL...period! LL's only choice was to try to erase Canibus from the history books by blacklisting him and making it difficult for Canibus to make money and become a big star. I'm positive he's still pulling strings to block him. The fact that he shouted Canibus out proves Canibus is still living in his head rent free. 🤷‍♂️
LL can never erase that moment though or that song...it'll live on...forever...to the death...death (Mike Tyson voice).

But then, he would've pissed Method off and ended up in the same spot. No career! He need to learn how move when around big dawgs!

It's interesting how this parallels battle rap. In that same era if you lost bad as a battle rapper that was likely it for your career. Now, niggas can go on a losing streak and still be relevant and/or getting to the 💰

I agree and disagree. I agree because battle rap is about displaying your skills against another battle rapper, but i disagree because there are many battle rappers who have skills in a battle, but are not as good as putting out an album that all fans in hiphop would like and not just one fanbase. Just like there are rappers who can put out a classic album but suck at battling. I dont agree with most the music today, but mostly the young kats in every generation decides whats hot. The 90s, my era was the last era to have originality in abundance, as well as balance, but my era was also the first era from the fans and rappers who embraced the ignorant side that helped make room for the garbage for the most part today with a few exception. Battle rapping is a skill, but its still limited to all the other factors in hiphop that require skill, as well for and ear to music.

He's speaking facts. The industry picks who they want to survive the beefs. Canibus killed LL. Rap is the only form of music that the industry allows to destroy itself so that they can take it over.

Man, I loved Canibus, still do. But if you insist on making an album full of battle raps, you can't expect that to work in the mainstream, lol. The fact he went gold is a testament to his talent since he went gold entirely on skills alone as none of those songs were hit-type material. The industry didn't screw him, he just didn't write hit songs.
You can either be an underground legend or a mainstream success, but you can't be both. He learned that the hard way.
