W.A.R. Corsair retract demonstration

- This is a demonstration of the hydraulic retracts on my W.A.R. Corsair project. This video is for my flying friends.I used a convertible retract pump from a Ford Mustang.I also had to install two solenoid valves to trap the pressure in the cylinders to hold the gear up and down.Without them, the gear would not lock, because the pump won't hold pressure when off.
Hope you enjoyed this video and thanks for watching.

I watched this vid a few years back. I thought it was a scale RC plane! Now I know you can actually fly in it!
Awesome DD《☆》Wow👍🍺🍕10 years ago. I know this project is a labor of love🖖😎☮
I'm building this plane at home in Pennsylvania. Thanks for the compliments.
What causes the gear to rotate the tire? Nevermind, found the other video where you showed the gears!
OK,THIS IS THE REAL,WHERE IS YOUR MODEL... WHAT A JOB MY FRIEND... SUPER PROJECT.
Very nice..
Make sure to check out the latest videos of the build.
Wow, hydrolic gear? That's cool! I'm currently building a W.A.R. Corsair, but I never thought of, hyd. gear. I already have the worm-drive gearbox installled into the cockpit floor. I am thinking of adding an electric motor to the cross shaft though.
I've been working on an 85 percent P39 design and watching this video is helpful in working out the gear system. I don't know for sure yet if the P39 is feasible--I want to put the engine behind the seat as in the original and running the shaft forward through the PSRU to the prop is challenging.
Man I would absolutely LOVE to see a P-39 replica, how is it going?
@@flyboy8364 I really admire what you're doing with that Corsair. You inspire me to work on my P39. The personal connection for me is that my mother was a WASP and flew P39's. Plus I admire that design. I haven't bought materials yet, but the design is at the point where I could start building. I haven't actually made a decision to proceed--the trouble is it looks to me like a ten year project and I'm 73 right now and I'm afraid I would not get it done in the end.
The design is a steel tube fuselage frame with a non structural fiberglass shell, wood wing and empennage structure, and the wing cover either plywood or possibly fiberglass bonded to the structure with foam for shape. 85 percent is the smallest I could build it with the shaft under the seat like the original and still have room for the pilot. The PSRU is mounted in front of the panel behind the nose gear well and will use a Gates Polychain drive. That will raise the shaft up to the prop centerline. The engine I have in mind is a Honda F22B, the 4 cylinder used in the Accords in the Japanese market.
Way cool. Just like real. Is there a locking mechanism when down or stowed ?
Genius
Beautiful work Don ..... Simply Beautiful ........ I really like your flap push rod re-do also .......
Just found your site recently and am devouring your construction videos ...... Do you know if anyone is using either of the Rotax Radials on the WAR A/C yet? ... I don't know what the WAR Corsair firewall Diameter is ..........JRW
Thanks for the compliments, glad you like my build. I haven't seen any Rotec radial in a WAR yet. The Corsair only has a 29 inch cowl. The re-do with the flaps was a great change. Much stronger.
Hey don are these retracts in the build plans or custom? Any idea of the weight for 1 of the wing retracts ?
Yes the gear is built from the plans. I added the hydraulics of my own design. The whole gear assembly plus the trusses that you see, probably weighs around 30-40 pounds each with wheels and brakes.
Hi I'm thinking of buying a partially built corsair. Where do you get your foam and canopy or other materials. The one I'm looking at has the fuselage and landing gear already built.
The foam I get from Lowes or Home depo. It's polystyrene. Be aware that it will melt with solvents or gas. Only use epoxy when laying up the fiberglass. The canopy I will make myself. There is a company out there that sell them for @ $ 600. Look into the Yahoo Group War Builders, Warbird Replicas.
I appreciate the help. Hope i can get mine looking as good as yours. By the way I'm a first time builder. I have built rc planes. Would you recommend this kit
That depends on how much time you have on your hands and skills. It's not much different that an RC plane. Just uses steel, wood, and fiberglass. You need someone who can weld chrome moly steel. Must be welded with a torch or Tig only, no mig or stick welders. If you can't afford a kit plane then this is an option.
How did you manage ldg gear 90 degree twist at retraction?
Watch the next video
are their any links to any plans ?
I would love to make one because I always loved the corsair and its bent wing.If their are no plans It ok it was just a request
thank you
WAR aircraft plans are nearly always available on BARNSTORMERS or EBAY (and are almost always old but unused). They are nearly - or full size drawings and are pretty substantial. You wont find any digital copies, sorry.
I know I'm late to the show, but here is the website www.flywaraircraft.com/
Where did you source the landing gear struts and system
They are all built from the plans. I made everything you see on this plane from scratch.
Hi, DynoDon. How do you maintain the wheel-down LOCK position for your main gear? I don't see a locking linkage connected at the retraction strut knee to keep it extended on the out-throw. Shouldn't that link carry the load instead of the piston/arm mechanism and hydraulics? Great job as always!
The toggle assembly that's attached to the strut goes over center when it is in the down position. So it is what takes the rearward force when landing. There are two solenoid valves in the output lines of the pump that lock the fluid in the cylinders as well.
Just noticed that your right gear is not locked in completely. Might need to adjust the limit switches. Would like to know more about the kit if possible what's included an idea of drawings etc. All the best.
+manofausagain, The gear is fine. That is an old video. Many things have been changed since then. There is no kit for my gear retract system. I don't have any drawings for my set up. Built it as I went along. Sorry for the late response.
Dynodon64 thank you. I was looking at a kit to build but information is limited in my part of the world. All the best. Thanks
you came a long way prior to your last video (sorry for bad grammar)
Perfect English, no errors
Don, I am looking for plans for the War replicas F4U it appears that they are out of business. would you sell me you plans or a copy of them. Thanks. Jeff
War has been sold, and the new owner is working on getting it back up and running. Go to the Yahoo Group WAR Builders, you may find a set of plans there.
Thanks.
+manofausagain, all of the WAR planes are plans built only. No kits of any kind. All you can buy are the plans.
Are the build techniques the same as a Long EZ? Moldless over foam?
Looks great My friend and I are building a Corsair also on a scrach built one about 63% or so at tigermothr80 on youtube
