    There’s a lot of walkers who say they’ve been chased by cows, or worse stampeded. When in fact some cows have just run towards them. Cows are very inquisitive animals, if they see a curious thing at the other side of the field they probably will run over to it (you). But they’ll stop when they get there. They’ll also probably circle you, just like they do the feed trough. Although this might seem intimidating, they really just want to see what you’re doing or, they think you might feed them. If you walk away they will probably follow you. After all, you’re still the most interesting thing in the field and this is what they do when the farmer comes to get them out the field. If you need a cow to move out your way, just walk towards it, they’ll let you get close but will back off or move away when you get within touching distance. Always remain calm, don’t run around you’ll just get them excited. Never get between, or particularly close to a cow with a calf. Equally, young bullocks can be frisky and overly familiar. A truly stampeding cow will have its head right down as it runs, hoof stamping and nasal snorting are also signs a cow is pissed off; however, by nature cows are not typically aggressive. The calmer you are around them the calmer they will be around you. Finally, although walking through a field of cows can be stressful for people not used to large animals, it’s their natural environment. Even though there may be a public right of way through the field, it’s still where the cows live. You’re a visitor. Treat them and it with respect and don’t write daft rubbish on the internet about how “reckless” it is that a farmer put some cows in a field with a footpath. You’d be more pissed off if I put them in your living room.

      Me and my partner walked through a cow field on a walk and had no problems walking through. Walking back was a different story however. It had gotten pretty dark so we had the phone torch on and around 10 meters into the field they all started running at us. Naturally we tucked tails and ran back to the gate, (which by the looks of what you wrote just got them excited) taking the path up the side on the other side of the fence. They kept along side us until I turned the torch off incase it was agitating them. So was this just them being inquisitive rather than the torch pissing them off? Thinking back they didnt seem to bow their heads when running. As soon as the light went off they just stood where they were.
      It's a nice route so we'd like to walk through it again. Just want to keep safe at the same time.

      @@ryanademi5330 I wasn’t there, so difficult to say, but from what you described they were just curious. Cows tend to get a little more excitable in the evening. They may have just run towards the interesting shiny bright thing or they may have associated the torch light with the farmer coming to take them back to the farm. The prospect of fresh food or bedding will induce a cow to run and when one runs they all run. But they also invariably stop once they’ve caught up with you. If you keeping running away, they’ll keep trying to catch up.

      @@tomdale9381 true. Most cows come running because they think you have a bag of grains with you.

      Hard without witnessing their behaviour. However if you were half way through a field and managed to get all the way back it's unlikely they meant any harm. Cows can reach top speeds of 25 mph and humans about 15.if they were truly charging to trample you, you wouldn't make half a field length

      If a breed is known to be potentially aggressive, like the Limousins I had a nasty encounter with, surely it's not unreasonable to ask why they're being grazed around popular footpaths (in my case, on NT land)? I do know the difference between a cow that's curious and one that wants to harm me. Not all walkers are ignorant townies. The fact is people have been killed by cows - not all those people were behaving in any way stupidly. I wonder how those farmers felt.. Probably "Stpid fookers, shouldn'ta been on the fookin path!"

    I find its pot luck with how cows are going to react. If they are far enough away and look docile I'll walk, if possible next to a hedge but if they are looking frisky or between me and the exit I wouldn't risk it.

    Cows are naturally nosy and territorial, but hardly ever malicious. I trust a cow 10x over a human, blindfolded.

    I've been attacked by cows, in Sussex, UK. I was walking calmly through a field, not dressed brightly and did not have a dog. Nor did any of the cows have calves. It was a terrifying experience and I'm now VERY wary of walking past cows. People have been killed by cows, yet farmers continue to allow the animals to graze around footpaths. I get that farmers own the countryside and all that, but those of us who do not have that good fortune should be allowed to enjoy it without facing this avoidable physical danger.

      I was attacked by a herd of cows on a national trust footpath. I had no idea the field contained a herd until it was too late to turn back, next thing I know more and more of them are making a beeline for me. It wouldn't have been so bad but there was only one direction I could go to escape due to there being a river on the one side. If I didn't run they would have penned me on the river bank, and me running provoked them. Luckily the bulls didn't notice me until I had managed to get away. It was my understanding though that bulls weren't allowed to graze on public footpaths due to the dangers they can pose. Scary!

      This has just cropped up on my feed again and I can report I've since been attacked again, this time by bullocks, in a completely different part of the UK. Again, I wasn't behaving in an agitated manner and I did not have a dog. The herd of about 20 large animals came thundering down a hill and surrounded me. When I tried to calmly walk back to the gate, they ran round and cut me off. When I tried to carry on across the field, they surrounded me again. All the time, they were taking it in turns to run at me. "Aw, bullocks are curious!" people say. Well, this lot were not watching me curiously.. They were trying to knock me over, presumably the better to trample me. I had to climb over a barbed-wire fence to escape. The animals were completely black ; I believe they were Limousins. I will now only walk in a field with cattle if I have a way out at all times.

    Walking our 8 month french bulldog, got charged by a bunch of cows/ young bulls, they were bucking and braying, we had to run for our lives through barbed wire fences, they even stuck their heads thru the barb wire fence trying to get to us! No worries, I will be having one of their cousins for dinner, steak to nite!😛

      @gbwildlifeuk8269 3 роки тому

      "ALWAYS carry a gun"? Where do you think this is the American West?
      The UK has some of the toughest gun laws in the world. People who apply for a shotgun or firearm certificate go through a series of stringent checks that can include home visits by the police, background and medical checks.
      If youre walking across a farmers field you DONT have the right to carry a gun and you certainly DONT have the right to shoot his livestock, especially when you are the one in the wrong, if crossing private land without permission.
