It has beauty, sadness, and certain tracks like this one, For The Last Time We'll Pray, and a few others bring out the true horror. One of Donaggio's best pieces in this score though which I came to discover Pino Donaggio. It was interesting then to find out Donaggio and De Palma have worked in a similar way to Hitchcock-Herrmann.
@ThinkPink866 Yes, just hearing the music like instantly sends you to the scenens of the movie. It sets a standard that every movie be paired with music as moving. The movie was on a couple nights ago and that's when I remembered how much I loved the music in it.

Bernard Herrmann was originally gonna score Carrie, but he died suddenly of a heart attack just before he was to begin composing.

And Donaggio scored it more like a drama than a horror film...which is why it works so well...
