I did a Zwift race last night it was an epic disaster got dropped right at the start finished nearly last in my category. It wasn’t a virtual experience ,it was a real experience,I got a fantastic workout.I’m now very motivated to improve my ftp to cope with zwift race starts.By the way i run Apple TV as the more times I have to recharge my devices the worse the battery health degrades.Ran Zwift on my iPad Pro for a couple of seasons , now the battery is on the way out
Hey Mark. Love the channel 👍 I have been Zwifing for years and semi-recently added in TrainerRoad to take care of my structured workouts. I have used all the devices you mention and ultimately I find the use of my MacBook Pro to be the most versatile because it allows you to run Zwift and TrainerRoad at the same time on the same screen with the same shared bluetooth connections. The Mac version of the TrainerRoad app has a "compact" mode, which tucks it away at the bottom of the screen and allows you to use the rest of the screen for anything you want. This is ideal for Zwift because the workout text from TR appears as an overlay to the whole screen which is exactly where you want to be looking when in the middle of hard efforts. For anything other than a recovery ride on TR you will need to focus so much that you probably won't want to watch videos/movies anyway, so I use the Zwift world passing by as the ultimate immersive distraction. Here is a screen shot of the setup in action : www.dropbox.com/s/b694bm93k2eeix1/TR%2BZwift%20setup.png?dl=0 Happy to explain further if you want more info.
@@MarkLewisfitness you just need to make sure that when pairing devices to Zwift that you deselect anything for the “controllable trainer” bit because you want TR to take care of that instead. Otherwise TR and Zwift will constantly fight for control of the resistance.
@@MarkLewisfitness Slight tangent, but like me you seem to be a gadget guy that likes his data. I would highly recommend that regardless of your TR or Zwift rides, that you also record these as "Indoor Rides" on your Fenix6. This is because all the metrics Garmin gives you about your VO2 max and Training Status are ONLY affected by activities recorded on actual Garmin devices. So even if you have your TR or ZW rides pushing into Garmin Connect, they won't count. So if you want to utilise Garmins holistic data approach to letting you know how you're going, you need to do this. Its for this reason that I actually dont connect ZW or TR to my Garmin account, because I am recording on the Fenix anyway, and I don't want their duplicate rides coming in too. Just send TR and ZW to Strava, Garmin also sends to Strava, but nothing comes back into Garmin.
Final tip! The Fenix software was updated a little while ago to allow you to broadcast your HR from the watch as a bluetooth signal. This is really handy for indoor rides as it eliminates one more thing (a BT chest strap, assuming wahoo) from your indoor set up. For outdoor activities I always use a chest strap for reliability, but the steady position indoors I have found to be 100% accurate using just the watch for TR and ZW 👍 In the settings of the watch you can either set up HR broadcasting to be automatic every time you start an activity (seems a waste to me), or you can do as I have, which is add the broadcast feature to the quick controls menu (which you get to my holding down the light button). I've found you on ZW, maybe see you around Watopia 🚴♂️
@@MarkLewisfitness I agree! He's a legend but some people take him the wrong way and attempt to match what he does. Which is an impossible task 😆 Thinking of doing an ultra myself next year when they return.
Really enjoying all of your videos Mark! Please keep them coming! Would be great to hear more about how you keep injury free during your training. Goggins can definitely be an inspiration but as mere mortal in my 30s, I find often start out with the best intentions only to push too hard which inevitably leads to some sort of injury/overtraining. P.s Garage of Gainz gets my vote :)
I use an HDMI 4X1 splitter to display up to 4 inputs on my telle simultaneously - no need to have my head on a swivel looking at multiple devices/training apps.
Great vid. I have a portable Aircon unit that blasts freezing cold air. Awesome for summer rides!. One upgrade I did was change the bar tape on the kickr bike. It is so much better as the tape you get is rubbish. My wrists hurt after a longer ride but this helped a lot. Shane miller has done a video on this and how to tidy up the wires. Just put in the below to UA-cam. Wahoo KICKR BIKE Handlebar & Bar Tape Upgrade // Smart Bike Customisation. Also I sometimes just have my spare phone (the one on your drop bars will do nicely) to run zwift if I want to just click up miles if I have something on the big TV Infront of me and the iPad is being used for something else. Keep up the good work!
If you are looking for someone that uses indoor training predominantly to prepare for Ironman... and then come 2nd at Kona.... check out Lionel Sanders. Not the same as Goggins, but you can follow him on Zwift, UA-cam etc and see how he structures his approach. He is quite open about what he does and the metrics he puts out
Very funny and informative - I’m glad I’m not the only one that talks about my kids like that. Mine are the same. Great names for the room and that’s a great set up. These vids are really superb!
I'm binge watching your videos at the moment. I must of heard you complain about that power cable on at least 10 different occasions so far. LOL. Anyway, enjoying the channel. Good work. More trail running videos with Nixon would be good!
I've been binge watching your channel for a bit and you've more than earned me as a subscriber. The 'Calories In - Calories Out' video alone sold me, I plan on punching it up again and will definitely share with others. Love your attitude, personal accountability, organization and shut up and do it mentality. I've had my Wahoo Smart Bike for a few weeks now and will be upgrading to Supacaz bar tape as mentioned below. Can you share what bottle cages are on your bikes please? Not had an opportunity to zoom in to see a logo or brand. Keep it up Mark, I too desire to be better than average. And happy belated birthday from a new subscriber in The Great State of Texas.
Great vids Mark, and congrats on your birthday! Myself is riding TR alongside Zwift (for de Zwift miles, and drops) on just one Apple Mac device. Using ANT+ HR-strap connected to TR and Zwift is just reading the power data from the Kickerbike. Have a good one!
You may run into buffer rate issues once the internal memory on the TV fills up. Unless the memory can effectively cycle with whatever streaming app services are offered on the TV brand, personally, I’d keep the Apple TV as a backup at the very least.
I was in the same dilemma as you with Zwift, TR, Netflix (or any video content to watch) and ended up running two TVs on a movable stand (a solid metal unit with industrial wheels). I have all the cables running though it with cables ties etc.
Loving these videos! Wahoo kick R bike arriving tomorrow to replace the Wattbike Atom. If you fancy trying an actual road bike race or Crit race let me know. I run an Oxfordshire based race team. Great video just found you and watch most of your video, the idea of putting the ipad on the drops is great idea definitely going to do that. do u have the link for the guy who makes the rocker plate
Honestly just stick with the airplay, if you're wanting a performance boost and a super smooth Zwift experience you would have to look at a mini PC for around £300-£400.
Hey Mark, been watching your videos ever since I bought my indoor trainer a few weeks ago. And I was wondering why you switched from Sufferfest to zwift, do you do their exercices or only the races? Could you do a video to compare them?
@@MarkLewisfitness thanks for the fast answer, I think that I’ll go with zwift for now, I am not planning on doing any plan. Great content btw, u deserved a sub!
I dare say your Mac will provide better graphics on Zwift than the Apple TV. I believe people gravitate towards the Apple TV simply for convenience, but your setup offers more flexibility 👍
@@MarkLewisfitness nah - AppleTV 4k is smoother from looking at the lag on your laptop. Give it a try. It'll surprise you. I reckon AppleTV will be a lot less choppy.
