Thank you for this, it brings back many great memories, I miss old Akihabara. As someone who grew up in the '80s/'90s, the shows I watched (Tomorrows World) and the authors I read (William Gibson, Neal Stephenson, etc) made Japan look like a futuristic cyberpunk world. As a computer nerd (back when you would get bullied for it) Japan was a dream destination, once I got a paying job in the early 2000's I was able to go and Akihabara was fascinating and so much fun. All of that is mostly gone now and it's 98% anime-related stuff, so I rarely spend more than an afternoon in the area nowadays.
lol John this was the first video I ever seen you in back in the day. Used to watch Kev all the time back in the day and this was the first Tokyo Eye I had seen. Don’t delete these they are awesome to watch back and see how Tokyo has changed.
2009, the year that my eldest daughter was born. And she's about to do her entrance exams for high school! How quickly time passes!! And watching this video from Akihabara of old, how the Akiba area has changed since this video was recorded.
wow, crazy to think about how advanced robotics were in 2009 for japan. especially compared to what we are seeing now currently around the world with different countries and companies.
Appreciate this one John and wow how different from how places or things in Japan look now 🤯🤯🤯 love seeing the Robots in Japan too perhaps there some changes from now??? I still believe in the Robot Friendly Society Project those of them are doing too 🤖🤝
17:57 I remember going to Akihabara in 2001 to shop for a digital camera. I went to one of those duty free stores and I asked where their digital cameras were located. The sales person led me to a long shelf that had hundreds of digital cameras. I was overwhelmed but after that one day I managed to find and buy my digital camera for 60,000 yen. Yes, expensive. In hindsight I should of done some research before going to Akihabara. I definitely would have saved time and a headache😕
Legend has it, Goku is still giving tours of Akihabara, albeit with a little more gray in that spiky hair...
I really love this 90's style of tv, or I should say, CRT style. I enjoyed this episode!! Keep it up, John!
Thank you John for another Tokyo Eye episode.

Ahh, Akihabara, the Otaku culture/mecca. SEGA arcade will be missed and some day to pay a visit for all things anime, gaming and electronics!

The short version as my wife had told me, that Akiba use to be call electronic town.
28:33 that noise!
Amazing!✌️
Kinda sad seeing this video knowing lot of these buildings are gone 😭
amazing how John all this while 'being' Daniel-san from Karate Kid somehow looks like Miguel Diaz from Cobra Kai in this video
I had that same Sony camera ! great camera !
11:13 Sonic Rush soundtrack?!
He still has the same hat!
John hasn’t aged one bit!
CAMERAS? Modern Electronics? The Marvels of Modern Japanese electronics?
Wow, so Gigo was always a thing back then? 3mins you can see the logo on the building.
Interesting stuff
I know! I did know until I rewatched this - they've been around for a while!
@@onlyinjapanGOIt seems like they might have been the driving force of the partnership, until of late. Just an assumption
Is this how you found the hidden shrine?
How did they get Tom Green and Ralph Macchio!
LOL that's a good one! hahaha
119,000 yen for that robot 😱😱 crazy that you could probably get one today for $30 USD
Rainy day discounts...
This new? Sound is odd
It says 2009 on the title and thumbnail so ...

Hen na gujin desu ka. Tabun.
Oh my.........that's a lot of cheeze.
The best 🧀 is aged 2009
this is Japan before overtourism ... not so many English signs ... you really need to know some Nihongo in order to get around
