This is how Europe’s dark ages began. The attack and purging of knowledge, its accumulation and its pursuit. Do not forget that Trump has said that the constitution needs to be thrown out, and his supporters only use the constitution to tear it up.
I used to work at NCF and know several alumns and professors, it's incredibly disheartening that this is happening to the College. This board is going to find it difficult to attract students and Educators to the school if they continue down the path they're going.
Problem is, it’s a Xanatos gambit unless someone checks the GOP’s dominance of FL government: DeSantis doesn’t care if the college closes, or if it becomes a shell of its former self because nobody wants to go there or teach there. Making it a conservative indoctrination center would be great from his perspective, but all he _really_ cares about is making sure it’s _not_ educating people-and he gets that outcome for a lot cheaper if it’s closed. The _only_ way the GOP loses on the New College front is if people _don’t_ leave *_and_* defy and ignore the new mandates. Keep the DEI programs going extra-legally (and without funding, somehow). Keep teaching the courses and course content that will get professors thrown in jail. And so on. I hope it happens, but I don’t think that’s a reasonable thing to ask of the people at New College.
Nah, they’ll turn it into another Liberty University. Sad he couldn’t just let students choose their college on their own. Welcome to Republican America.

@@trimanlast I don't think a governor of a state should have such a direct hand in the running of a state college. A governor is only the head of a single branch of a three tiered state government, thus representing, at most, a third of the government of the state. The judicial branch should have oversight of state universities by the enacting of laws governing those institutions.
@@virgilfulton4426 My genius friend: maybe judges should be in charge of absolutely everything. The insane left certainly believes that. However the executive branch oversees the universities and that is what the man is doing. In a rational world the government would have nothing to do with University education;. Dude tenure is such as broken and abused system. What it does is gives a professor a job without any way to be fired (other than maybe breaking laws). I had a horrible professor and that’s to put it mildly . She was so bad eventually the dean had to step in and put her to teach only 1 obscure class. She had surprise midterms and about a quarter of the tests asked questions she never taught, was not in the book or in the homework. But it’s all good she has tenure and can’t be fired. Her average class grade was in he 60% area with no curve. In the second term of the year the students were moved to be taught by the other professor and every one got a 20% or so curve so atleast some students would pass. My major GPA was 3.975 only had a couple A- in classes in my major. Biology and chemistry dual major. I usually set the curve in my science classes including physics and in her class I had a low B. Luckily I did not have her in lab and when the other half the students came to my lab (super crowded with twice the student) I came out with a 100% would be 110% or so because they had to curve the grades to pass student (including the valedictorian who had a c or d in her lab) Tenure is broken and honestly what other jobs offer this. Hmm do cooks get tenure so they can show up drunk and not be able to be fired. Maybe we should offer tenure to truck drivers or to nurses or how about everyone and then everyone can do whatever and still get payed even if they don’t do their jobs. Let alone do them well. At most tenure needs earned every 2-3 years. Just so they can eventually fire the bad people. If your a good professor and your still doing well then tenure is not needed. Business don’t fire good employees (for the most part, nothing in this world is absolute)
Would you rather have educators or politicians in charge of decisions regarding education? I know that the free and open thinking that educators and higher education in general typically promote is dangerous to the conservative agenda, but maybe it should be. If anyone demands you stop thinking critically and that only they tell the truth, these are the people feeding you the lies.
I suspect a lot of Ronaldo's support comes from the same kind of people who support Loser Trump. His supporters appear to want to be free with a colored triangle on their jackets.
@crassgop Just to clarify, by voters you mean politicians. That is the burden of having a democratic republic and not a true democracy. You are essentially preferring the handing power of educational decisions to people whose careers are based upon an agenda powered by whomever provides the most campaign funding. That is why you are seeing conservative politicians trying to drastically defund and subsequently destroy public (non-profit) schooling to push more parents and students towards private (profiting some specific entity; possibly profiting the politician themselves like in the case of Betsy DeVos) schooling. I would rather have my children's education in the hands of someone who has a career in education and that actually wants to fully educate them instead of someone that wants their campaign donors and/or lobbyists to profit off of them. If you would rather have the latter, then we have a truly fundamental disagreement that sadly can never be reconciled.
@crassgopYou mean the people voters vote in. Voters aren't deciding anything. Voters are dumb as rocks. I'd rather just the parents have a say. It's their children.
It's much, much worse than that. Drumpf's fake university was a grift, a money grab that damaged the lives of anyone duped into paying to attend it. DeSantis is attacking education itself. It's an attack on learning, on knowledge, on critical thinking, and on the freedom to hold and publicly espouse any differing opinions, facts, etc from those " accepted " by the regime. DeSantis machinations, not only within the realm of academia, but across the spectrum of human existence within the reach of his regime, is textbook dictatorial, totalitarianism and his words and actions could easily be mistaken for a documentary on the rise of fascism in 1930s Germany. It's carbon copy fascism. It's blatantly un-American; antithetical to the fundamental ideological pillars of democracy itself. DeSantis represents a clear and present threat to this democracy.
This will go over the head of anyone who never went to college (or in the case of Republicans graduate high school), but you can't run a college like that. Because the people who want to go to a right-wing diploma mill are already at Liberty University.

I’m sure countless others have made this point: I’ve spent my entire career in academia as a reasonably successful college professor at a major state university. The US Department of Education "advised" Florida that this law makes awkward changes to the state's accreditation process which means that the schools and the students would no longer qualify for federal grants and loans. Being a UK resident I'm not going to comment on the politics of this crisis but I have a long interest in the standing and status of universities having worked in HE for over 40 years. I'm particularly interested in university rankings. New College of Florida, although very small (about 650 students) appears to be well ranked when compared to similar instittutions across the US. Good rankings are vital in order to attract and retain good staff and good students. The risk, of course, of the measures being taken by the current administration in Florida is that it will not help retain high quality academics and, therefore, the rankings might fall which in turn leads to the institutiion becoming less attractive to good students. This might also in turn affect the standing of the whole of the university system in Florida. Appointing a active politician as acting President is also a big risk. That's not to say that other politicians haven't been appointed as university leaders elsewhere in the US and the rest of the western world but usually they have a good deal of knowledge about the university sector having been academics before they entered political life. Though he's been a politician responsible for schools, etc Cocoran doesn't appear to know much about the univiersity sector and it's a big risk appointing someone to a leadership role in a sector that they have absolutely no experience in.
Thanks for the cogent remarks. This almost certainly won’t end well for New College which because of its small size will not be able to compartmentalize the injection of politics from education and administration.
@Phillip Banes would you like to clarify what you mean by that remark? What exactly do you even mean by those things that are anti American? Wild claims like that would be backed up with evidence surely.

The backlash of all this can be to have this college disenfranchised in accreditation nationally as a school of higher education and as with many businesses that have bad management wind up with No professors or teachers at all. Educators from all over can refuse to be employed there. Without proper accreditation, they become the same as a school that tries to offer a degree that is not worth the paper it is printed on.
I think that they're probably trying to scare away any qualified teachers, so the only people who will apply to teach there will be conservative loyalists and sycophants. Exactly what DeSantis wants.
Why would you deny tenure to a professor of organic chemistry? This isn’t a “woke” subject at all. Unless you want to examine a person’s political orientation, this decision is pretty bad for the college, the State of Florida , and America.
@@MaatsFeather I struggle how people use this term. I've just hear many Republicans like DeSantis use it when someone is espousing ideas that don't like.
@crassgop Are you questioning the need for tenure or the need for tenure of a organic chemistry department. 1) Tenure refers to a teacher's employment status within a institution of higher learning. When a professor has gained tenure, he or she can only be terminated for a justifiable cause or under extreme circumstances. 2) Assuming that there is a chemistry department within the institution and you want to have professors teach the various type of areas within Chemistry, you need to have an organic Chemistry teacher. Without providing tenure to the Organic Chemistry Professors, the institution will lose the necessary academic standing to stay relevant.

My wife left and got a much better paying job. But she missed the kids and was contemplating going back. And that's where they get you. They know you love the kids and they push you to your breaking point knowing you'll stay for those kids. Take care of yourself. There are programs where you can still help the kids, and if not you can start something. My wife still talks with most of her students about everything from their problems to their accomplishments. They both benefit.
Has your wife considered private tutoring? I really think it will be where the $$ is at when all of those middle class parents banning books realize what they have wrought for little Jimmy and Jenny's future.
Take heed because anyone with this "College" on their resume or diploma will not be taken seriously in the real world job market, nor will any publications written by your faculty from now on.
That's where its all heading unfortunately. And if they succeed in turning this into something like a public Liberty University they will go after every public school in the state as well.
For those not familiar with how this works, tenure decisions go through multiple levels of review, typically beginning at the department level, and then to a dean and provost. These are the levels of academic review where decisions may be affirmed or overturned. A board of trustees does not get involved in a tenure case except under the most extraordinary conditions for which the board of trustees bears ultimate responsibility (such things as a financial emergency affecting the institution or allegations of moral turpitude against an individual faculty member). To have a board of trustees arbitrarily overturn five tenure recommendations simply because they have the power to do so is unheard of. It points to something profoundly wrong in the governance of the institution, for which DeSantis bears responsibility. It is nothing less than an outrage.
A huge chunk of not the majority are in financial straights. Tenure is down across the nation. It’s also important to realize competition is far more international this year. The majority of my teachers were from Asia/Africa and were far more engaged than the American counterparts.
What does point to something profound the room. But why are you so sure that it’s not the applicants or the process that led to them being in a position to be denied tenure. Tenure is not a right.
@@rhyslucero1400 I think there's an assumption that it's not their performance because they were all recommended for tenure at every point in the process prior to the board being fired and replaced with lackeys.

His goal is to shut it down.

@@virgilfulton4426 My genius friend: maybe judges should be in charge of absolutely everything. The insane left certainly believes that.
Luckily I did not have her in lab and when the other half the students came to my lab (super crowded with twice the student) I came out with a 100% would be 110% or so because they had to curve the grades to pass student (including the valedictorian who had a c or d in her lab)
Tenure is broken and honestly what other jobs offer this.
Yep I'm voting for him
Politicians getting directly involved in education is exactly the opposite of FREEDOM that DeSantis supporters claim they want.
The democrats are directly involved in education too. For example the DEI policy is a democrat policy. And a terrible one at that.

Nonetheless, I'm quite familiar with the Oxford English Dictionary as I actually own one. As in, a physical copy on my shelf, next to works of etymology, various thesauruses, non-English dictionaries, a collection of Shakespeare's insults (great book!), and other nerdy books.
The good folks at OED understand the efficacy of conditionally-accurate lexicography and contextual jargon. For instance, _academic_ tenure is not defined by the Googled-sourced definition of "tenure" but by the tenure _policy_ of the academic institution granting it. Most academic institutions in my experience have various levels of tenure, including contractual, temporary, probationary, and indefinite.
I have yet to encounter a tertiary institution which grants "unfireable" tenure (indefinite tenure is not it). I'm sure they exist but, in this day and age, they must be rare! Perhaps ivy league universities?
Feel free to exhibit New College's "unfireable" tenure policy. I'm happy to be proven wrong because it means I've learned something new.
I'm sure you share that sentiment.

@@trevorbarnhill3399 Florida, Tennessee, Texas, now Montana, Missouri, too... the list goes on and on. These states aren't losable by default. If we could just get more people voting, you would see. I remember when Obama was elected, what a landslide the election was, all blue across the map. We need to get people excited, to give people hope in a better future again.
Republican are becoming like Russia
I hope all people lovers will go out and embrace the good ppl with words of encouragement. I am over 60, disabled and a shut-in and I post like crazy. If you are out there plz help stop the hate movement. Thank you!❤❤❤
SO I HATE DeSantis
Not even an American -and I hate De Santis(and Trump). Birds of a feather.
I feel you. I am 46 now, and honestly, my body isn't what it used to be. I feel rough when I come home from work after an eight hour shift. But I am still thankful, though, I am still able to still be able to have enough energy to at least work and do what I can. Sorry to hear what you're going through.
And what a part of our Country has become with this hate movement makes me sick to my stomach. It really bothers me what some people out there have become. I do the only thing I know how. Live my life as a good person, help out those if and when I can, and pray that we, as a Nation, will be alright.
Fascism alive and well in Florida..
I appreciate being made aware of this. Thank you!
aka Trump, I mean, DeSantis University
Same as the backlash for doing nothing, Indoctrination centers disguised as higher education are dangerous.
I think that they're probably trying to scare away any qualified teachers, so the only people who will apply to teach there will be conservative loyalists and sycophants. Exactly what DeSantis wants.
A preposition is something you should never end a sentence with.
Why would you deny tenure to a professor of organic chemistry? This isn’t a “woke” subject at all. Unless you want to examine a person’s political orientation, this decision is pretty bad for the college, the State of Florida , and America.
It is punishment for having the audacity to subscribe to a guidance and belief system that dares to defy what DeSatin and company demand.
@crassgop Aren't compensation and benefits a part of why we work?
What is a woke subject?
It's okay. Nobody expects much of Florida's youth anyway. DeSantis is the reason so many kids in Florida will graduate into those prisons he wants to build next to Disney. Honestly, I'm surprised he's not known as "Duh-Satanic."
Those new prisons will be private for profit so his donors need more convicts to increase their profits.
I applaud the professor, character matters...
This is what they want. They want people to walk away and not look at what is happening. :(
Ron DeSantis is out of control, someone should do something fast before he completely takes all rights away from those who live within Florida's borders!
I know this is easier said than done, but I feel all teachers should quit. You get no respect, low pay, and no help. All while the board keeps giving themselves raises.
Mass Exodus. Then DeSantis will have NOTHING.
So this is what those Christians mean when they say they are being persecuted.
Take heed because anyone with this "College" on their resume or diploma will not be taken seriously in the real world job market, nor will any publications written by your faculty from now on.
That's where its all heading unfortunately. And if they succeed in turning this into something like a public Liberty University they will go after every public school in the state as well.
If you have to take sutch drastic steps to silence scholars, you might be on the wrong side. Just a thought.
DeSantis, "You will hate who and what I hate or I will change laws and rules to force my hate upon others."
BINGO....Position of hate, welcome to the Republican Governor's Cabal.
That's not a college any more. It's special ed. I expect a class action from students suing to get their money back any time now.
Yes sorry to say but that is the only thing they understand.. they must be sued for their dysfunction before they will see it.
It's heartbreaking to know that this will never be included in a story about this event.
A huge chunk of not the majority are in financial straights. Tenure is down across the nation. It’s also important to realize competition is far more international this year. The majority of my teachers were from Asia/Africa and were far more engaged than the American counterparts.
Guess what sweetheart we're doing things a different way now we're tired of all the Liberals brainwashing our kids so we're doing something about it
What does point to something profound the room.
It’s really bad in Florida. Please save us!!!
Accrediation bodies do not like this level of medeling. He's going to fool around and get all of Florida's universites put on probation or worse. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools should step up and put them on notice.
Florida is going under
Good to see he's cleaning things up
