Bach - Toccata & Fugue in D Minor | Spectacular Rieger Organ, Marienstatt Abbey, Germany

  • As part one of a new series featuring the spectacular 4-manual, 73-stop Rieger organ of Marienstatt Abbey in Germany, I present a live performance of Bach's legendary Toccata & Fugue in D Minor BWV 565.
The recording was made with a single pair of omnidirectional microphones to pick up the organ and the church's wonderful acoustic. The piece was recorded in one take whilst the church was open to the public, hence the occasional background noises.
The organ is about to be enlarged considerably (don't forget, it already has 73 stops!) and I have been asked by its custodian, Frater Gregor OCist, to make a series of videos documenting the upcoming work.
The first videos will present the organ "as is" and over the coming months, we will be keeping you up to date with all the work involved, including interviews with those involved.

This tempo is definitely fast for my taste, but hey you know what its your interpretation that matters. Magnificent performance, and execution of this rather misunderstood piece. Thank you very much for your content Maestro Gartshore. And best regards (Matt) :) P.S. This very piece was actually composed by Bach to convey his feelings towards the unending ethereal majesty and grandiosity of heaven. Its very disappointing that many only associate this piece and the pipe organ for that matter with horror oriented films and events. When really the Pipe Organ is hundreds of chapters more than that.

Oooh. Your technical skills are outstanding and that's a beautiful beast of an instrument! However, I have to chide you on speed, especially in the Fugue. With such an organ and sanctuary, note decay is quite long. It seems that a bit of restraint in terms of speed would "open up" some of the gorgeous (and also playful) portions of the piece. I admit to a little disappointment too at the end of the main body of the Fugue because of speed (the final Bb chord, before the next-to-last sequence starting F-G-A-Bb). Please forgive me for sharing this, which I do as a musician, with respect - you're an excellent organist and I love your posts!

I definitely loved all : the acoustic of the church, the sound of this organ, your choices for the registration and your brilliant performance with a slightly higher tempo than usual that makes this "over played" piece to wake up and give it back his baroque native style. Bach pieces should be nicely highlighted by this particular organ. You should keep recording Bach's hits on it if you can.

Thanks for this video, Fraser! It's very interesting for me, because "my" organ is quite similar: Rieger, built in 1997, 58 stops on three manuals and pedal. Warm greetings from Dinkelsbühl!

I play the organ. I know many organists personally, some of whom are excellent organists. That being said, a lot of organists I have met are rather stuffy and have attitudes. It is evident when you what them play and when I have chatted with them. You are the complete opposite. Your head isn't up in the clouds. The attitude you have is very evident in your posture. Thanks for being down to earth! I love your videos. The world could certainly use more organists and musicians like you!

    Bravo Sir! Beautiful! Thank you.
However, to fully appreciate such a splendid piece, you have to be in the church. I have vivid memories of our organist playing this music as the recessional hymn for Midnight Mass at our much smaller church and pipe organ. Nonetheless, to feel the notes hitting your body, and to feel the building vibrant and resonate with each note, essentially becoming a part of the instrument and music, simply cannot be captured in a simple audio recording. I would argue that with an acoustically well designed building, the organist is not just playing the organ, but is also playing the building. Hence the pauses are as important as the notes, allowing the listener to fully absorb the notes.
    Again, thank you.

Weiter so!

First time I see a video of yours. My compliments for the execution; you play the Toccata e Fuga in re minore at some higher tempo than what I usually ear it played, and that makes the execution notably much more difficult, but you go over it like nothing! Congratulations!
Of J.S. Bach organ works, I like the Toccata Dorica even more, as it is even more spiritual.
Thank you for sharing, and Regards from the UK.

The Fugue was too fast for my tastes, Mais c'est une question de préférence, n'est-ce pas....
The 1970+ Rieger sounds stupendous (although I wish we could have seen some shots of the beautiful organ case). Loved the 32' Kontraposaunenbaß (?) at the end.

Everyone knows this piece from the opening bars of the Toccata, but the part of this piece which really makes it for me is the ending of the Fugue.. I cant begin to describe how the closing bars of the really push and pull especially those last few chords. I have not done music theory and only have heard of suspended and diminished chords, but I am sure there are some in there! spectacular. As always wonderfully presented and played by Fraser. Your videos are so entertaining compared to many other on organ's and organ music.

The other thing; the volume of the high notes was much lower than the counterpoint and bass. I know, you do the best and for long time don't play it. Have a beautiful Life. So much could be said. Instrument and performer. This is an existential exposition. Yours is first div stuff. The T&F is tough - it puts you on show. The fugue tempo ( your presto!) is vital - it unlocks the 'dialogue'. Makes one phrase shouts at the next. Then the pedals have their say. Becomes a race. And by 9 minutes up - your smiles show you having a laugh having conquered. It was at that point I sort of said - well Fraser - let's see how you bring this home. And of course with this instrument - a stunning landing. Wonderful. Saved on my 'specials' file. All Saints stuff.

@ Fraser Gartshore Super gespielt und bombastisch registriert hier an der Rieger- Orgel. Die Zungenregister und diese Orgel klingt sehr gut!
