Good video! I just planted Sunn Hemp for the first time. I'm excited about switching from solarization of my beds, which I've done the last 9 years to using Kodiak Mustard, Sunn Hemp and Sorghum Sudangrass to kill nematodes. I'll be making a video about this big switch. 🌿
Neat, I never knew hemp was a legume! I am thinking of broadcast into my corn at V4-V7 to add N to my soil. With cereal rye, buckwheat, radish, and sun hemp. I live in Northern South Dakota, we have a short growing season. Lots of trial and errors but fun to learn!
The last season we had Monsanto corn on the land I had a company that was going to arial broadcast a covercrop throught the corn so it would be established when the corn was harvested.
How to grow hemp to improve soil health: When to harvest it so other fruits and vegs can be sewn then? How can u tell when the soil is healthy and then can plant other seeds in? Can we plant other seeds while hemp is already growing? Can we plant other seeds while hemp is growing. If yes, which ones. Pls give a list I have a lot of hard soil and dry patches too. Could you provide a step by step process. Usman Salim
if you're not tilling, why not leave the roots in the ground? I would cut the stalk at ground level (another reason for good timing to make for easy cutting.) I see that this is 4 yrs. old...maybe you're doing my suggestion.
@@farmerkeith I live in an area where they are present and I don't know how to distinguish one from the other. I know that legumes form the nitrogen nodules but I want to be sure that what I perceive as the nitrogen nodules are not root know nematode nodules.

Make sure to kill the sun Hemp as soon as it Flowers or it gets stringy like Hemp and IA difficult to deal with
@@farmerkeith Sure will. Thanks!
I'm about to disk mine in for a fall crop. Hope it works well.
Get it before it Flowers. Otherwise it is super fibrous, hence Hemp being in the name

Can I used this in my compost pile?
If you get it young. After it flowers, it is very stringy.
@@farmerkeith ok
What are the secrets to getting the sunn hemp to grow that aggressively? What variety did you use and was it fertilized or inoculated beforehand?
Good soil and rain fall I guess. I used a standard variety from 7 springs and inoculated with peanut inoculant.inoculation. No fertilizer
Hey Keith, just wondering, did you plow this under or just let it lie? Thanks, Gary
Brush hogged after flower.
Horrible stringy mess
@@farmerkeith may have to wait for spring next year for it to break down. Thanks man, I enjoy your videos.
can you tel what is nitrogen ratio?
You think this would grow as an understory to kill out Poison Ivy in my spaced out forested area
Sun Hemp requires full sun

Did you broadcast or drill the seed?
Broadcast

That was the last time I planted sun hemp. If I do it again, I will cut it as soon as I see a flower pod. It was a stringy mess
how do you differentiate nitrogen nodules and root knot nematode?
As far as I know we do not have root knot nematode. Our state tracks the area where they are present and it is very rare

Use the hemp for clothing. ???
No. It is a cover crop.
Can you share with me where you bought your seeds? I’m having difficulty deciding a good company
I get all my cover crop seeds from Hancock seeds online. Best price and quick shipping
Does the sun help smell good when you cut it? Kinda like alfalfa maybe?
I don't recall any particular smell that stood out while cutting it.
Is it good feed for goats?
Don't think so, it get really stringy
Seed per acre?
30-50 lb/acre
You could cut it down much faster with a sickle bar mower.
That would be faster but I don't have one
Isn't this ganja?
I wouldn't recommend smoking it. Lol!
