About Farmer Keith:
Keith is a successful market farmer utilizing techniques suited for small plot intensive vegetable production known as Market Gardening. This year we are massively expanding our operation adding 65+ new beds, a 30'x48' high tunnel, and 2 caterpillar tunnels. This season we will have around 100, 40 ft long, beds 30" wide which come out to about 1/2 acre of area or 10,000 sqft of bed space under production. With this we will harvest around 200-300 lb of produce a week that we sell to local restaurants and at our many farmers market. Our goal is to share the tools and techniques required to farm naturally on a budget with the troublesome insects and weather conditions across the US.

The CSA Model is Dead!

My belief is that the CSA model is dead, at least in our region and customer base. We have been running at CSA for 6 years, which is the community supported agriculture model, and I have not been able to expand it. Recently we only spend money to extend it. Thanks for sharing your friend from Egypt 👍🏼
Very interesting techniques. Time is money in farming.. appreciate Local Farming
Can you do this with the big torpedo heaters also? I don’t have power where my greenhouses are yet and cold front is coming this weekend, and I’m looking for the best way to heat them. Thanks for your input.
Yes you can but you have to supply it with fresh air. If it runs for to long the oxygen level drops the heater will shut down automatically
Would the exhaust CO2 not help the plants? Maybe I am showing my ignorance, nothing new lol.
I actually exhausted that heater outside. The bigger heaters will shit down if the CO2 level gets too high. It might be beneficial to the plant, but when the heater shuts down and the plants die, it's not so good. Keep Farming
Kieth, two questions. What variety of lettuce is going in that tunnel alongside the spinach? And have you ever tried growing perpetual spinach? And if so, what are thoughts on it.
Salanova. And I have not tried the vining type spinach. Keep Farming.
Nice. My spinash was struggling with the warm fall, just barely didn't bolt. Likes wet sunny 50F, tricky
I actually lost my earliest planting due to the heat. I should have had fall spinach over a month ago.
My favorites for the winter tunnel Sunangel - upright savoy Auroch - upright flat leaf And Kohlibri Kohlibri really for stability but it becomes harder to harvest later in its cycle even though it won’t bolt as fast as Auroch Sunangel has beautiful spoon like leaves Auroch much more flat but faster and very upright
Great information. Keep Farming!
QUESTION? I have a old stand up freezer that still works, we just can't find gaskets for it. Q? anyway to make it a floral cooler? As low as 34*
Just add a foam gasket to it. Something like you would use on an exterior door and the are self-adhesive. Keep Farming!
how long can you run that heater off of the 12 volt battery without charging it? How many amps does the heater take to run properly.
I ran it for a week on the little battery I was using. Amperage is going to change depending on the exact model you are using.
I wonder if i could get away with one of the 8KW RV Chinese diesel heaters in my 10x28x7.5 ft greenhouse. Its pretty well sealed. Im in STL
Doesn't nt the water in your dripline get too hot by the time your ready to water the plants at mid day?
Any residual water in any of my mainlines cools in the air as the droplets fall to the ground. The mainline in the tunnels is also white to help with this.
What a great idea!🙂
How is the rope being used to add weight to your greenhouses? I think the material matters for greenhouses, and the design of it as well, so if where you reside gets too much wind then it might blow away your greenhouses.
It holds the plastic down to keep it from buffering in the wind
@@farmerkeith Rope itself does not have too much weight, so because of the lack of weight that it has then I think it can either break, or fly away during bad weather. Currently I have a small greenhouse that I recently bought, and mine uses plastic. I will not bother with using rope during bad weather. I will be taking apart my greenhouse before bad weather hits. If I get a bigger greenhouse then it will be with consideration on my part. I am currently thinking about location, and design of greenhouses.
❤ I love this to watch this video.
I don't know Celsius, but I do know a few Fahrenheit and Celsius comparisons. 0C is 32F. 25C is 75F, 30C is 86F, and 40C is 104F. Once you know those, you can figure out the approximate Fahrenheit comparison to most Celsius numbers. 0-10 is cold. 10-20 is cool. 20-30 is warm. 30-40 is hot.
Hi whats the oz on the fabric that you use? And are they by Dewit?
3.2 oz dewitt
@farmerkeith thank you.
I know this was 3 yrs ago but I’ve seen some bulb planters on Amazon. I wonder if it would work for garlic. They’re under $50 & I think they’re tall enough to use without bending over too.
It could but you are going to end up with a very large hole for a rather small clove
lettuce? looks like a curly endive or other chicory, imho.
Salanova
if you're not tilling, why not leave the roots in the ground? I would cut the stalk at ground level (another reason for good timing to make for easy cutting.) I see that this is 4 yrs. old...maybe you're doing my suggestion.
That was the last time I planted sun hemp. If I do it again, I will cut it as soon as I see a flower pod. It was a stringy mess
explaining how the machine worked and the adjustments you made was super helpful. I have a kubota LA 344 and was trying to decide if it would pull the implement. Thinking I might be able to do this!
It would. I'm pulling it with a B7100d. 16 hp. The real trick is the soil conditions.
Weather patterns are erratic nowadays. The lack of a cool down pattern for you and 6 weeks no appreciable rain here (TX coast) make life "interesting". Good review of all the prep & maintenance a season change brings. 👍
We have not had rain during that time either. Been very dry the last couple years.
This is what I’ve been looking for.
Welcome! Keep Farming.
Thanks
Cow peas came up great. I have a lot cute moles. When i aerate with the drill they like the holes.
They are always welcome this time of year
Great video!
Can I still grow and harvest my lettuce seedlings if they are leggy
Great bunch of carrots! Looks like you got it figured out. I'm interested in learning more about your farm school. I've recently started a small market garden to work with our community food pantry. I basically sell at wholesale and donate to help fill our community fridge with local produce. Future goal is to develop a CSA where local businesses would contribute to fund the operating costs to enlarge production. Small town and plenty of need, but I have some dirt, tractor and time to give back in my own way. Thank you for all your time and sharing your knowledge.
The farm school is a deep dive in all topics, setting up to selling your produce at the market garden scale. Each module is about an hours worth of training. When you purchase a module, you will receive a PDF document containing links to the specific videos in the module and any associated training sheets we sell. Currently, the first 4 modules are live and cover everything from planning to planting. Here is the link to the product page. arkenbergfarms.com/products/market-gardening-farm-school
I’m doing fall gardening in Ohio. Need a tunnel.
Hi. Just came across your video as I have just got a 20kW diesel heater for my greenhouse (24m x 6m). The heater looks pretty much the same as yours. I"m just trying to keep the tunnel above freezing (will set it on 4degrees celcius) with all our tomatoes seedlings in there for our upcoming plant sale. My question is about ventilation. I just opened up the instructions and it says the space should be ventilated. It says for indoor use, provide permanent ventilation openings of at lest 24cm2/kW, equally distributed between floor and high level with a minimum of 250cm2. Maybe it was a good thing you forgot to close the side of your tunnel? What do you reckon about ventilation and your diesel heater?
The heaters have a low oxygen sensor that will shut down the unit without fresh air. I am planning on adding an intake from outside to the intake on the unit to feed it fresh air
Thx,
Meadow creature broadfork. The larger 1 for you. Hope this helps!
Same here only with our lettuce. Transplants are getting to big and leggy waiting on a cool down. I swear Ray Tyler couldn't grow lettuce down here in west central Louisiana. Lettuce transplants still struggling hard after planting 10 days ago. Cmon October
Same thing here. We use white on black fabric in summer and under 30% shade cloth for the whole time. It doesn't grow the best, but it grows. And you can harvest bolting Salanova if you get it first thing in the morning. Keep Farming!
To get those plants that big in a small cell they or either using Alfalfa or sea weed extract as a secondary Boost in nutrition both contain plant growth regulators the seaweed is a spray use use on seedings the Alfalfa is a meal is mix with the planting mix
I might have to start using a seaweed folier spray next season. And switch up to 50 cell flats in the summer
Interesting. Bought a 3in pot of lettuce, think there where atleast 50 growing in pot. Soak them in water and most eventually separated to some degree. Think I saw soak method on utube while ago. Doing fine after recovering from shock. I start onions broccoli like that 50 seeds in little pot but, there is week of shock delay.
What's the thickness of your aluminum? Ausome video
I can't remember the gage, but I think about 1/16". Thicker is better because it will flex less when under a vacuum.
I've had to run my tiller 2 and three times over compacted soil shoveling each pass out of the way of the next in order to really loosen and break it up. Then lots of leaves as well as broken up small limbs and twigs. Only way to keep it loose!
Hi Keith, thanks a lot for your content. I was wondering, what's le longevity of those motor ??Any return on that? cause they are really cheap compare to the one sold by the big greenhouse compagnies. Thanks
Mine it still going strong. Make sure to look up the other Video about the second wiring option. The analog switches can stick. ua-cam.com/video/5LOmoXlOE_s/v-deo.htmlsi=rLLsaW5L3oMdAroe
Great informative video! Thank you!
I love Manny cucumbers
Down here in ga I have the same issues this year, they look the same as yours ,long 8s are the species I planted ,I have flowers ,but within a week ,my leaves start turning brown, and then nothing for cucumbers
Mine always look like that towards the end of the season, but still pump cucumbers
Nice show. My cucumbers patch needs improvement. The 1st batch is uncontrolled too much, preferring babies for pickling. 2nd batch gets eaten from above and below. 3 batch stalls . Failed to execute my plan, this yr
Keith, did you mention the seed name and where they were purchased?
They are the new marketmores. I believe from Territorial
So this thing will put down approximately 100 gallons before the battery dies at full power and you'll get about 2 hours
What about on 1,200 acres?
Doesn't the garden fabric increase the heat in the soil
It actually shades the ground and makes it cooler under it.
Thank you
I've got the solution, Kieth. Buy another 100ft cat tunnel and use it exclusively for carrots! Here in Louisiana its a must not because of soil issues but the never ending torrential heavy downpours we get,.
That is the best solution I've heard! And, I happen to have another cat tunnel. Keep Farming!
I grow carrots in raised, above ground beds, and or huge containers . I use potting soil or sandy, loose soil. Harvesting is easy, as I just dump a container out and sort through, like one would do for potatoes. Loose, fluffy soil is key.
