what a journey from discovering 'and in the darkness' then 'titanic rising' to finding this. the most beautiful, elegant, gorgeously crafted song i have ever heard.s o grateful for natalie. forget lightning in a bottle, she has discovered perfection in a bottle and she delivers it time and time again. so grateful to share the earth with her. so grateful
I keep seeing Karen Carpenter comparisons, but to me stylistically her vocal runs and range are a lot closer to Vashti Bunyan. That being said, Natalie Mering writes stronger material than either of those aforementioned singers. For however great her singing and the arrangement on this is, from a songwriting standpoint this thing is like a runaway locomotive of awesome.
People always appreciate music for every reason except for the music. Especially critics.
I think it's less vocal range and more of that pure, haunted sound that they both seem to produce. I'm a huge Karen fan and Weyes Blood makes me feel the same way I feel listening to the carpenters. They both have that feeling in their voice that makes it seem they knew more heartache in their young lives than possible.
You might like some of Mellow Candle's stuff so @Chris Hornbostel, such as "Silver Song".
