  • I tried out the "Nikon Focus Shift Shooting" feature on my Nikon Z6 and then focus stacked the resulting images in Photoshop. Focus Shift Shooting is a feature of the Z6, Z7, and D850. I'm sure more Nikon cameras will have this feature in the future but as of the making of this video, those are the cameras with this awesome feature.

    Great instructional video - you kept it brief and to the point and didn't go off on any tangents. I tried this tonight on my Z6 and it worked perfectly. Thank you for your help!

    This is new information for me that I only looked into because Focus-Shift Photography is in the Z6-Z7 user manual. So I have never tried it but I will. Of course this gives me more ideas. I wonder what it would look like to create a GIF or a video of a bunch of focus-stack files. The focus point (I'd expect) would roll from foreground to background. I want to try that too! Great video and thankyou.

      Hi Phil, How about a video showing your video setup and settings... I'm new to video but we shoot the same kinds of subjects and your setup video would be helpful to me@@PhilThach

    • @PhilThach

      @@bap1944 For vlogging video, I mostly use my Canon Eos M50, it's a very small mirrorless camera, APS-C size sensor and better than average auto-focus. It also has a flip out screen so you can see if you are in the frame. I really wish the Z6 had a flip out screen!! I use it's 15-45mm kit lens. I use a rode video-micro microphone and the handheld Manfrotto pixie tripod with it. All the video in this was made with it, the rest was screen recordings of my 2010 iMac made with Quicktime. When I use the Z6 for video it's usually for birds at great distances with either my 200-500 or my 500 f/4 with teleconverters for more reach. As for settings, I shoot 1080p 30fps, at 30 fps a shutter speed of 1/60s is best for smooth video. If I ever get to 1000 subscribers, I'll make the traditional what's in my bag video.

    Nicely done, Phil! I just picked up a Nikon Z5 and this has the same option...process doesn't look any different than with a Z6/Z7, etc.
    When you were sorting through the main focus shift shooting (FFS) menu, setting your various parameters, I think you MAY have skipped one option. On my Z5, at least, if you scroll down past "silent shooting", there's an additional option titled "starting storage folder".
    I'm assuming that selecting this option allows you to save any images taken in a FSS series in a completely separate folder than the "general" folder where the rest of your images go? Might make it easier to find all those photos in a series that you want to export to a photo editor instead of searching through the general folder for all the FFS photos you want to blend together. I know when I did manual focus stacking in my prior D7500, before I took the first shot, I'd hold one finger out in front of the lens and take a photo to indicate the start of a series and then take one with two fingers to indicate the end of the series.
    Keep up the great work...cheers!

    Nicely done video. So let me aks this question. All cameras can can focus stack but Nikon says the Z6 does it in camera and the Z5 cant do it at all? When they say in camera, they mean taking the image and automatically moving the focus , as your video shows. The camera will not process the images thought, right?

  • @HamiltonSRink
    @HamiltonSRink 5 років тому +1

    NIce job Phil! I'm sure your results would beat mine as my Lumix FZ2500 has a smaller sensor with less mega pixels. But I have fun doing focus stacking in camera. Auto merging is switchable on and off. With solid tripod and no subject movement, auto merging may be turned off. Try both ways.

    Well done. Can you do one from close up to infinity on a landscape shot? How do you know that you have infinity focus in one of the shots?

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  5 років тому

      Geoffrey Byers Thank you. Yes, you can do a landscape shot like you described. If you set the number of photos to the maximum of 300, it will stop at infinity or 300, whichever comes first.

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  5 років тому +1

      I forgot to answer your second question. You'll know you have infinity in a shot because the camera will stop before it gets to number 300. If it doesn't, use a wider focus step width.

    I'm going to play with my Z6 now and shoot some macros (have the 105mm Micro Nikkor f/2.8 lens at hand too!) -- unfortunately, I don't have Bud but do have other beer. It's in glass bottles as well, although they are clear -- will this suit as a light stand or do I need to buy Buds?

    Hi Phil. I’m a budget birder with a IPADPRO with no capacity for post processing. Which camera set up gives you the best out of camera images? 😊.

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  2 роки тому

      If you’re not going to edit the photos at all I would recommend experimenting with the settings in your camera you can usually boost vibrance and saturation and sharpness. So shoot JPEG and experiment with those settings in your camera until you come up with something that is satisfactory to you.

    Stacking at f11 and 200
    mm?
    You have 1.5 m of sharpness.

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  3 роки тому

      You also have to consider distance to subject in your equation, if you’re a long way from your subject, you will have more than 1.5 m if you are extremely close you have much less than 1.5 m. It’s been a while since I’ve looked at this video that I made well over a year ago but I’m pretty sure that the four or five or maybe it was six photos in this stack, none of them were front to back sharp and therefore needed to be stacked to get the entire image sharp. Thanks for watching, Bastion! Now that I think about it, I think I might’ve been at 500 mm during this shoot. I’m not sure, like I say, it’s been a long time since I made this video.
