I do Light contact, and the side kick really is bread and butter there. Once you get good at the sliding version, and especially chaining them or throwing other techniques off of it, you have such a large threat zone.

I use the gazelle or leaping lead hook regularly and it indeed covers a lot of distance. Because of the power even if it is blocked you can follow up. The lead right hand is great and often opponents are untrained to react to a lead right and normally throw a jab parry as they assume the first punch is a jab. Today I will try out your demo on the Thai side kick- it would be great to see how you use it in sparring as I am always worried about someone catching a side kick and sweeping etc. Your videos are of amazing quality and I would like to thank you for providing such wisdom which allowe me to grow even when I cannot find in coach in my area. In depth Thai side kick vid would be beautiful. A little bonus I do with the step thru cross is using the momentum of the roll to throw a cheeky left body hook. I normally do Thai or MMA sparring so after two or so throws I then ditch it as I know I'll get tagged. Always feels sooo good to land it though!

Definitely interested in a detailed breakdown of the side-kick, particularly on weight distribution before and momentum generation with the step!
One thing not mentioned for the hook is the fact that since it's used as a surprise opening attack against an opponent ready and with their defense up, a straight punch would end up in their gloves, whereas the hook circles around it.

  • @plexq

Really love these technique videos - they're super helpful - the step hook was something I found myself doing because it felt good - pump fake on the cross, and then spring forward with the hook - seeing that it's a legit technique is awesome! I'm new to Muay Thai/Kickboxing, so I wasn't sure if it was a good move! Also LOVE the thai side-kick - I'm definitely working that up! More info on that would be super.

"Jumping hook" also called a gazelle punch. Rocky Marciano used it, and he was undefeated despite having the shortest reach of any heavyweight champion; so it is very good.
I think Marvin Haggler had success with a "gazelle jab", and Ricardo Lopez might have as well. From what I have seen, it appears to be the best method to cover distance in boxing. I have been trying to have this observation confirmed or denied, but the technique is pretty rare.

In taekwondo they call this first kick is called the cut kick, which is really confusing since Muay Thai has a different kick called a cut kick from what I understand.
This was so popular in sport Taekwondo that people started to leave the leg up and push up their opponent's hip in order to cancel out incoming kicks (since there are rules against punching to the head and limited points for punching to body). It got so ridiculous that they eventually made a rule against leaving a leg up in a chamber to discourage it. Still very popular! One popular counter is the Moldova kick, a sort of round kick where the rear leg crouches. Another popular counter is the turning heel kick. The turn allows for the incoming sidekick to glance off and set up fighter to counter to targets head. This one probably is a bit more practical than the Moldova kick in scenarios where damage is important

@@joshmailova I think so too but there's obviously a lot of shortcomings to get through because of the rules set has left the modern Olympic sport in a strong "touch fighting" habit. Even though the modern rules do allow for knockouts to end fights in your victory.

I do an independent motion right cross technique. It's where the weapon moves well before the rest of the body. I learned it through Joe Lewis who learned it from Bruce Lee. My foundation, like Lewis is karate. My only concern is that the larger the glove, the less the impact power so it may not translate to the kickboxing that you do. It will work with MMA gloves or less.

there is another punch that covers a lot of distance that Pacquiao uses in every fight and in almost every round. After he throws the rear hand he steps or jumps forward with the rear leg throwing his jab. He's hurt and put down many fighters using this technique. Most recently or in his last fight he put down Keith Thurman in the first round using this technique. He also adjusts this jumping jab with the rear foot going forward into a hook or uppercut depending on how his opponents react. Incredible punch and very challenging technique as you have to set it up with the rear hand first or a feint or it becomes too obvious

I think I know how to throw the Thai side kick but I’m willing to bet you’ll have some details and insights that will make it way better so here’s another vote for a detailed Thai side kick video.
The leaping hook is a variation on the Gazelle punch famously used by Floyd Patterson. Joe Frazier was another notable proponent (see his knock down of Muhammad Ali in round 15 of their first fight) as were Rocky Marciano and Mike Tyson.
    As always, fantastic video!
