Leyenda by Isaac Albeniz

This is one of the most famous pieces in the classical guitar repertoire. Almost all high level professional players have it in the repertoire. Some good performances to check out are Anna Vidovic • Ana Vidovic plays Astu... , and John Williams: • John Williams: Isaac A... . I do my best to live up to their examples in this video.
Leyenda (legend) or Austurias as it is often called was written at the end of the 18th century (1892) in the era of the nationalist composers. They were composers who were trying to capture the essence of the newly formed nation states that we are familiar with today. This piece does just that and really creates the feel of what we now consider Spanish music. Albeniz was a pianist as well as a composer, and this piece was originally written for piano. The guitar world co-opted the piece starting back when Albeniz wrote it. Franacisco Tarrega was the first to play it and arrange it for guitar, and as the legend goes he played it on the guitar for Albeniz who is said to have remarked that it sounded better on the guitar than the piano. This story might just be another apocryphal tale, but it sure sounds good.
