😂I was a pedal noob back in 1988 (13 years old back then) . I always thought all pedals are distortion. I bought a used pedal in an impulse, called a friend and asked him to bring his Yamaha solid state amp to my home (I didnt have an amp), and plug my guitar to jam.... Expecting a distortion tone like Slayer... all I heard was a clean tone with swirls... It was a Boss Flanger 😞
OperationEndGame Had the same experience too and funny enough it was also a flanger! And the other pedal in consideration was the same pedal in the video. Talk about coincidence. 😂
a friend let me borrow his octave pedal the day i got my guitar... probably saved me from such a miscalculation... but also started me down one hell of a rabbit hole (at least 32 pedals not counting multieffects units, most of them some form of dirt pedal)
My very first pedal was also a Flanger: DOD model. Second one was a Metal Zone: stacked with my 2x12 amp gain, it sounded monstrous, so Kerry King tone (garage edition) achieved.
YES! Totally remember these - I remember being absolutely amazed when I learned about the concept of using an overdrive in front of the amp (I think it was from an interview with Trey for Morbid Angel in that infamous "florida death metal roundtable" from 92 or so)
To be fair they're not that fragile either. The plastic is pretty sturdy unless you actually stomp your stomp boxes into the ground. Or am I the only person in the world who steps on his pedals instead of stomping on them? Lol
The pure frustration in your face trying to get the pedal to engage brought back so many memories and not all bad!! Always thought it had a great sound, once it switched on properly and once I learnt how to use it. But many an occasion, especially live, it wouldn't engage..I still have mine.. I might go dust it of for old times sake. Great vid. :)
There has always seemed to be a slightly lower mid hump to me than a ts808/9. Like I always paired it with an ancient rat back in the day and it played nicer than other ts models. It seemed to have a touch more growl and less honk than the other ts's So yeah I appear to have just bought a second one for no real reason other than to have it. Heh
@@fiveways Yeah that sounds about right, a little more low mid girth. I also found the top end a bit grittier in a cheap sounding way, which translates well once it hits amp distortion
@@geoffh8077 honestly for that trick I've always reached for a dod juice box I've had forever that someone scraped all the paint off of. The 2 band eq on it i found really helped shape the boost frequencies. Though, honestly I rarely use amps with gain channels. Most my heads are very.....doom specific. Like OR120, hiwatt dr103, ampeg v4, or vintage traynors. I've recorded with that sound a bit bit honestly I've always been into the loud clean amp with a rat variation in front of it.
I just had flashbacks to when I was about 16 circa 2008, saved up a bunch of money to get an SH-8 Invader put into my crappy bolt-on Epiphone, plugged it into my Marshall MG-15 solid state amp with its massive 8" speaker, and tried desperately to convince myself that I now sounded just like Synyster Gates. Ah, simpler times.
I totally had one of these when I was a kid around the same time period. This video perfectly captures the feeling of how pointless it felt at the time. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
I had the same experience but with an original Marshall Guv’nor. I had this magazine that showed the pedal setting needed to get artists’ tone. For Metallica I allegedly need a distortion, an EQ, and a chorus. I saved my pocket money for a long time, found the cheapest pedals I could get (a Marshall Guv’nor, an Arion EQ, an Ibanez CS-9). After going home I plugged all that in my Peavey Rage (12 watts, 8” speaker) set it all up like in the mag ... and it wasn’t And Justice For All by a very long shot. I sold-off those pedals which are now quite desirable! I had no idea what I was doing, but one has to start somewhere.
dude...you know what i remembered while watching your video? I had mine in 1996 and i invited my friend to my home to impress him with the pedal. Had the pedal on my bed, i was playing and guess what happeded...it LITERALLY cough fire...FIRE...we scared to death...threw it in the floor...Then i was so sad that my pedal died...but...it didnt...it went on working normally..hahaha...This is a crazy pedal for sure.
I bought a TS7 also having read Guitar World magazines and seeing tubescreamers as a pretty consistently mentioned pedal. And got home to plug it into my Peavey Rage 158 lol
I still have my sound tank Bass Chorus, it's a kinda of subtle and limited chorus but it still works well. I gigged that thing for a decade! I'm just a surprised as anyone else that she is still runnin' strong.
Regarding the switch issue, mine had the same problem, I just used a cleaner spray for electrical components (a lot of of it) and it switches like new now without failing and it's been for months.
I had a similar experience the first time I bought a tube screamer as a teenager. I was using a solid state Marshall and I had no idea what I was using. Nowadays, about ten years later my overdrive is a key to my tone both live and recorded. Funny how things tend to work themselves out!
I had one of these pedals. Bought it for about £20 from The Guitar Store/Victor Morris in Glasgow on my way to rehearse at Berkeley 2. Left it in the rehearsal room that day. *facepalm in excelcis*
I still use the 60's fuzz boosted by another fuzz I built, through an old bassman into greenbacks sometimes. Sounds cray cray super fuzz with blistering bass.
This was my very first pedal. I knew nothing about it, but I saw the word "distortion" on it and I was sold. I kept it for a long time until it just stopped working.
Thomann had a budget line still using this casing and it is still in use with one manufacturer, Daphon I believe. BTW these aren't all plastic enclosure, first run had a metal casing. They changed it and also the fonts and artwork used. Most noticeably on the fuzz pedal out of this line.
I remember having the same kind of disappointment with the exact same pedal, I think I actually traded it to my best friend for a boss blues driver, but I am very excited that I decided to hang on to my sound tank echomachine.
One of the best free things I was ever given in my life. I've recorded with it and got great results. The only thing is if you cut it off, it's noisy and sucks tone. If you never have to cut it off, like with recording, it does the trick! Now I use a joyo vintage overdrive, as it literally uses the same chip, is true bypass, and is only $30.
Used to have a TS5.... Never really realised what I had tbqh. Even though I loved the sound of it, I did eventually sell it. Had fond memories of it. The one I had was actually fairly solidly built. Perhaps I was lucky 🍀 Think the main problem is, it looked budget, even though the innards were classic Tubescreamer lol. Ironically in the UK these Soundtank pedals are reaching fairly high prices...
You should have compared it with the classic TS9, that woulda been grrreat! Nice yelling you did when the pedal screamed at you, I'm still laughing 😂😂😂😂 that part of the video is a gem!
I laughed at your story. The TS-9 was my very first pedal ever, a Christmas gift from my parents when I asked for a Fuzz Face and the local small music store told them it was "the same thing". You and I were the same age and had very similarly disappointing experiences with that thing! I could never switch it on reliably either, I had to press like the very edge softly to increase my chances. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Funny thing is that happened to me too. I found out that James hetfield used a tube screamer on ride the lightning so I bought the behringer vintage tube overdrive and was disappointed by the fact that it didn’t sound like ride the lightning. Over time I grew to love the pedal.
Haha same thing happens to me with and Justice for all and Kurt talking about his tube screamer .. good news I ended up with a ts10 tube screamer that looks pretty good because I ended up not using it a lot .. actually had a sound tank classic metal that was really good for the black album and previous albums ..
I had the exact same experience in 1995-96. I was incredibly disappointed in the TS5, as I had no idea what a tube screamer/overdrive was or how it should be used for metal. I had it going into a Crate solid state head and thought it sounded terrible. Shortly thereafter, I moved on to a Zoom 3030 and thought that was amazing. Now I run a Maxon OD808 in front of a Roadster half stack and am able to appreciate a good overdrive pedal.
Bad Motivator people do that and it’s not particularly hard. Ideally you’d also remove the old plastic shaft pots and wire leads to metal ones mounted to the pedal chassis. It’d be a fun afternoon project and come in under a TS9 if you can find one of these Soundtank Tube Screamers for $20 or something, which is becoming more difficult.
When my son started play for church my brother lent me thr Orange Boss Distortion and we plugged it into his fender frontman solid state amp, i was more of a drummer and bassist so I didn't know how to properly set an amp so my go to settings were drive 10,treble10, mids 5, bass 10 and then the pedal cranked 🤦♂️😂. We have since learned about amps and pedals 😁
I remember reading somewhere that the Soundtank delay had the same parts as a Radio Shack Karaoke machine. When I was 16 or so someone had the Slam Punk, it sounded more like a Fax Machine than a guitar pedal.

I have one of these I bought new in the "90s. I recently read that the footswitch problem isn't the switch itself, it's a resister connected to it. Apparently doesn't allow enough current through to connect all the time. I replaced it for a few cents for the resister and a little soldering 101 technique and problem fixed! Also I replaced the op amp chip for the 4558D JRC you can find all over eBay for a few cents also. Original chips where REAL cheap. Now operates and sounds close to a vintage TS . Still is a cheap plastic case though but I've put it through the ringer and it hasn't fallen apart yet! Oh, instructions for the resister replacement and value of resister can be found on the internets. I just have forgotten exactly where. That happens after you've been playing guitar for fifty+ years!
Those ibanez pedals look like an accsesory for the sega game gear.

Yes! Oh my god! 😂😂😂
Considering all the add ons that make that console look like it's on life support I'm not sure it isn't.

100 wahs and 20 ds1's

When I was a teenager I bought so many pedals trying to find the magic tone fix for my beehive combo that I could've bought a better amp instead.
finally someone talks about this pedal! i grew up using this pedal and never heard anything about it!
I have the ibanez tube screamer mini. It sounds good and is definitely built to last
The Behringer tubescreamer clone costs new $25 and is a great sounding pedal. Just dont stomp in it.
