For the samurai, finding a cause worth dying for was the same as finding a cause to live for...at least, that's what my swordsmanship instructor says.

@@Tantalus010 I think that was the beauty in this conversation. The Emperor was interested in what they thought was important in someone's life, the manner in which they died. Augrin as a foreigner was able to show him what they valued, the manner in which he lived.

This movie was released when I was stationed in Japan (US Army). The Japanese people loved it, despite some historical inaccuracies. It captures so much of the emotion and culture of Japan, but is also emotionally resonant for soldiers from any culture, from any time. Thank you for sharing your reactions to this masterpiece.

The exact reasoning and the way it goes isn't accurate, but they also never attempted to make such a movie. But the core of the movie and the events themselves (for the most part) are actually true.

I wish I was in yours then. In mine there were few gasp and some emotional, but not for long. It's the only movie so far that left me in a daze plus full of heroic spirit walking out (plus some others) but most were already random chatting at the credits like usual and of course exiting the room. Fortunately I was so immersed I only felt the mundane of real life when in the entrance hall again.

Katsumoto recognized the significance of the moment.
If he survived, then his legacy would be one of defeat and the shame that followed as he was powerless to stop Omura.
In his death, in dying in this way, in that moment, his death carried more weight than his life ever could.

The original work of this movie is modeled on Japan's last civil war, the Battle of the South. The name of the model is "Takamori Saigou" My 4th and 5th generation grandfather has died. My fifth grandfather was a close friend and was retired at the time, and I just wanted to see the "Saigou" outing, but suddenly I brought my sword to my house and died. The fifth generation of his son fought until the end, and like the movie, he was "Harakiri" at the age of 25 and pierced the last SAMURAI. The two tombs are now sleeping in the same place as "Takamori Saigou.

I will cry. A scene where a soldier kneels down on his hat.
The soldiers were at war, but the samurai were different.
The samurai was wondering "how to reach the noble end".

The soldier probably knelt because he noticed it.
The soldier thought, "What a noble death!"

Before I die, I want to design my own set of traditional Samurai armor. And I want to make it by hand. ALL of it... by hand. Even the cloth. There is a very good chance I will not achieve this goal, but it is still something I shall strive for until my death.

This is a true historical events
but the film maker made some creative freedom. The American Captain is actually French to mention a few. Kindly research if interested about the true history.

Uhh, after all, that means that samurai were employed as guards for the emperor and aristocrats, but because they exceeded their status and accumulated too much power over long time, so they were doomed to perish, , , right??
