My wife at 73 has ALS, she is on a ventilator in the hospital and made the hard decision to disconnect. Her body has loss all muscle mass, she has no mobility with her arms or legs. If she was younger, a trach might work for her. Doctors wanted to be realistic about getting the trach, the surgery and infections were the deciding factor. I hope one day they find a cure for ALS.
