Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone) is a beautiful, wealthy and popular highschool student living in a Beverly Hills mansion with her rich dad Mel (Dan Hedaya), a grumpy but successful lawyer. Cher’s best friend, Dionne (Stacey Dash) is also beautiful and wealthy and dates Murray Duvall (Donald Faison), another popular student. After receiving a bad grade from a harsh teacher, Cher decides to play matchmaker and orchestrates a romance between her school’s two hard-grading teachers. Her plan ends up working perfectly and seeing the new couple enjoying their blissful relationship fills her with joy. She decides to keep using her skills for good deeds. Her next project? Transforming Tai Frasier (Brittany Murphy), the “tragically unhip” new girl, into one of the coolest girls in school. When Cher’s ex-step brother Josh (Paul Rudd) visits her during a break from college, he mocks her superficiality, pushing her to be even more selfless.

Having a mobile phone was beyond luxury at that time, this scene is made to show us how filthy rich she was.
I know. No kid in my high school had a cell phone in '95. Not only a rich luxury, but many of us viewed it as kind of unnecessary. lol Like "Okay you have your own phone when there are phones everywhere...great." 😄
