Synthetic fabrics must be heated up for them to take dyes or for bleach to strip their color. Putting your fabric in hot water and then adding bleach can work but be careful and follow a tutorial. LaurDIY has a good one.
There is a product called colour run remover for this exact situation, carful it doesn't react to embroidery on the clothes though, removed the flocked lettering on a t shirt when I used it
Important points not mentioned: 1. The bleaching process will continue until you remove it, or neutralize it. Bleach is usually sodium hypochlorite. 2. Rinsing in large amounts of water will remove it. Inexpensive but slow at stopping it. 3. Hydrogen peroxide will neutralize sodium hypochlorite. It is fast and safe, and the byproducts are harmless. (4. >>>Do NOT use vinegar as a neutralizer. It will turn into hypochlorous acid and then potentially chlorine gas.
I’m making a Ghostbusters 2 cosplay and the uniforms are a charcoal grey, but the flight suits in the brand I use don’t come in grey, just in black. I have been searching everywhere for how to safely and carefully fade my flight suit to a more charcoal color!
I can’t recall exactly how long, but I would say approximately 2-4 minutes... maybe 5 minutes at the most. Looking at the results, most of those fabrics certainly would have benefitted from a longer soak. I have a couple other “bleaching fabrics” video ideas and hope to get them published soon. Thanks for watching!
Ok-great informative video....just one thing missing as far as I can tell.....what TYPE of fabrics did you use? It very much makes a difference if it is a synthetic fabric vs. natural fabric. Do you know or remember what types of fabric they were?
The blue and off-white were linens, and the brownish was a synthetic, like the stuff a suit lining or vest is made of. The other (grayish) fabric I don’t recall the composition, but I believe it was a synthetic blend of some sort. Hope that helps! Can’t believe I didn’t mention that in the video. Thanks for your comment!
I'm sorry but this is way too cinematic than it needs to be. Have fun by all means, but oh my goodness the number of angle changes makes me lose interest.
Doing a little mac cosplay but can’t find a matching pink hoodie and sweatpants online so I ordered them. The pants are too dark. Trying to lighten them with bleach :)
This doesn’t matter in the least for the outcome, but I must insert my geek into this. Your concentrations aren’t really correct IF you did as you said and just added the bleach to 100 ml. You have to subtract the amount of water for the bleach you put in. So if you put in 5 ml of bleach, you would use 95 ml of water. The equation we use in chemistry is C1 x V1 = C2 x V2 where C = concentration and V equals volume. Also, The bleach straight from the bottle isn’t 100% bleach. Most bleach is about 7.5% bleach, so it’s important to look on the bottle and get the concentration, then use to the equation to know the exact concentration of bleach. Your solutions are probably around 1% to 5% bleach.
I have a navy blue jacket. You had same color fabric and it turned red. All i can think is 1. It gets to be a brighter blue Or (most likely) 2. I turn it white wash it then dye it.
This is amazing dude!!! Can you experiment different colours and what happens when they’re bleached?? Try light colours and some unexpected colours and see the difference??
I have a multicolored 70% acrylic, 30% wool sweater that I’d like to lighten overall.. I know bleach melts wool, is there another way I could achieve this?
Just Fyi: A tea soak can age fabrics in a Natural way and smells much better than bleach. What I can't Seen to find an answer to is: how Long to soak fabrics in bleach and how to neutralize it, without putting too much again in the fabric... Great Video though, i didn't expect the synthetic fabrics to be so extremely resistent. 😮
I was looking up inspiration for a shirt idea I have, and this was very helpful so thank you! also, this was the first video I clicked on in my search, and when you mentioned Naka at the beginning it caught me off guard. fellow Kansas Citian? ☺️
Are the different molecular structures of bleaches. That would be weird if this is one of the only things in the planet that doesn't have different structures. But other than that you could add additives or synthesis it to alter it to change how they act . right? that's how everything works?
I was just looking for a way to bleach 98% cotton 2% spandex jeans cause the newer batch from the store is poor quality control and I need to make do for now but cool stuff lol
Bleach destroys Lycra/Spandex. But if you’re determined to try, get a pair of thrifted jeans with the exact same fiber composition and do the same bleaching experiments as in the video. You could get some bleaching with minimal elastomeric destruction .
@The Science Pirate do you think I can bleach my natural color waffle thermals into crystal white with how much bleach and time on the fabric??Just curious
Do you know how to get white colour back from white clothes? I gave old clothes that the colours are off, already bleached it without adding water but failed. Dunno anymore
Hey man I know this video is a little older but, I’m trying to bleach my black hoodie (100%.cotton) exactly the way your shirt is. How did you do that??
Hey! I have a question about bleaching some 100% cotton twill dickies carpenter pants that are a light brown.( the classic carhartt color) I’m trying to turn them like a cream/off white color. Will bleach do the job?
That depends on what type of fabric the dress is made from. Synthetic fabrics are more difficult to remove color from using bleach. Ultimately you would need to test it to find out what effect it would have on the dress.
Im trying to bleach my chekerd vans to white because i want to paint on them cause i dont really wear them anymore and preferably i would like to use one black fabric marker so it doesnt break because of the paint, which happened to all my hand painted clothing. Do you think this method would work?
hey cool video, i got a White jacket like polyester or something plastic like all these days. and the black nylon inner lining of the jacket turned orange and discolored the white outside. to a spotty orangy ish, looks stupid... what do you think will work to get the outside white again? i tried baking soda, doesnt touch it!.. Thanks!
I’ve never worked with powdered bleach... I would likely make solutions of varying concentration by using different amounts of the powder. You’d want to reference the packaging or do a google search for how to prepare the bleach and adjust from there. Hope that helps?
Absolutely! You can always drizzle the solution onto the sweatshirt (which gives me an idea for a video...) rather than soaking it to give it a different look. Using bleach to remove the color will give a faded look for your sweatshirt!

Whats the video called??
@@chwinggum1310 it’s called Transforming my Boyfriends clothes by LaurDIY
can you point me to which LauraDIY video?? I'm looking but not sure which one has it.

Any tips on achieving a fade that doesn’t look bleached ? Been searching to no avail…. Don’t really like the red brown type fade

I came here to learn how to bleach fabric into a lighter shade. But this channel seems cool!!
Yay! Thanks for sticking around!
Same. I have a navy blue jacket i want to make normal blue and the hood grey.
Length of time is a factor. How long did you leave them in?
I can’t recall exactly how long, but I would say approximately 2-4 minutes... maybe 5 minutes at the most. Looking at the results, most of those fabrics certainly would have benefitted from a longer soak. I have a couple other “bleaching fabrics” video ideas and hope to get them published soon. Right?! Freakin youtube....
You deserve more views
Impressed by your approach and scientific method. I applaud you, sir. 👍🏼

Pander agreed the cutscenes are too much, but it is very informative.
Well, that explains why my bleach-dyed t-shirt worked in minutes, while my synthetic hoodies are only lightly faded after an hour...thanks!
Glad I could help!
thank you dude! i have this fanny pack i needed to turn white and you just helped me
As a brit the combo of your username and the words 'fanny pack' is just funny hahaha
Is that Vsauce Jake but older?
Why do I feel like this dude does a *fantastic* Jeff Goldblum impression?
You need to add heat (boil if possible) to the polyester and polyblend fabrics with the bleach.
Good info! Thanks for sharing!

so if i end up bleaching a navy blue will it just come out red pink? :/
I have a navy blue jacket.

All i can think is
1. It gets to be a brighter blue
Or (most likely)
2. I turn it white wash it then dye it.
Also you are awesome.
I used bleach but the fabric was red. at what rate should it be mixed with water to make the fabric white rather than red?
My fabric is denim
Amirhosein Imani same someone help ! 🥺
Have you guys found out?
Wash and rince it till there s no red
thanks. im planning to lighten the color on my fitted sheets.

I was waiting until the end to see the costume …and how it turned out. 🥳
But thank you for a superb tutorial and experiment…and I really enjoyed the entire process.
Not sure why... maybe it's the editing of the video or something...but I'm lost! lol
How long were the fabrics dyed for in the bleach?
I have this cute red tank top but it is RED. Im hoping this is gonna help...
Tysm I needed somw info for a cosplay I'm working on, just wondering if dye will stick to my bleached fabric well..
Just make sure you wash the bleach out very well before the dye. Should be fine!
@@TheSciencePirate thank you.

You discovered by random bleaching something leather workers learn. Dying leather black REQUIRES a under color like red or blue.
Just Fyi: A tea soak can age fabrics in a Natural way and smells much better than bleach.

Did you come up with a good way for bleaching synthetics. Trying to bleach a fabric headrest to match the blue of my chair.

Ugh I have navy blue fabric I'm going to try and incredibly watered down solution and see what happens. If I have to dip multiple times I will lol
I want to just make the seams of a tshirt look sun bleached or worn. What would you suggest?
I would suggest a very weak solution of bleach and try painting it onto the shirt with a paintbrush!
I was just looking for a way to bleach 98% cotton 2% spandex jeans cause the newer batch from the store is poor quality control and I need to make do for now but cool stuff lol

@The Science Pirate do you think I can bleach my natural color waffle thermals into crystal white with how much bleach and time on the fabric??Just curious
Can I bleach/dye blue or black polyester/spandex blend into white?
No, synthetics do not bleach to lighter colors, and the bleaching chemicals destroy elastomeric yarns.
Just what i needed, thx!!❤❤❤❤
Do you know what types of fabric this is? Jean poly blend? Cotton?
Nice test👍🏻‼️the music is like noise on a chalk board 😩
What would be the best ratio for 4 pink t shirts (sizes girl 7, adult medium, large, 2x) that I would like to be lighter?
Okay, I need to bleach a dark grey woolen fleecy type fabric. Will that ruin it??
I would recommend starting with a very weak bleach solution. You can always add more bleach if it doesn’t do what you’re wanting.
would dyeing the fabric after bleecbing work or would it be patchy ?
Do you know how to get white colour back from white clothes? I gave old clothes that the colours are off, already bleached it without adding water but failed. Dunno anymore
So how would you bleach synthetics then?

How about if I have the yellow color
Hey! I have a question about bleaching some 100% cotton twill dickies carpenter pants that are a light brown.( the classic carhartt color) I’m trying to turn them like a cream/off white color. Will bleach do the job?
Cotton will bleach. If there is any poly, that’s questionable and you might get really inconsistent effects.
Interesting video!
Does it occur or will it happen to fake furs? Like brown colored fur turn to white?
I have my doubts that it will work with fake furs, but you could test it on a small scrap?
Can I bleach a pink dress?? Will it come out white??
That depends on what type of fabric the dress is made from. Synthetic fabrics are more difficult to remove color from using bleach. Ultimately you would need to test it to find out what effect it would have on the dress.
is there anyway to bleach polyester?
Amazing video and had to dance a little at 4:30.

A weak bleach solution should restore the whiteness of the jacket. You can paint it on or spray on with a squirt bottle.
what if i have powdered bleach????
Powdered bleach?
I’ve never worked with powdered bleach... I would likely make solutions of varying concentration by using different amounts of the powder. You’d want to reference the packaging or do a google search for how to prepare the bleach and adjust from there. Hope that helps?
let me get straight to it: I'm trying to bleach a black hoodie to brown
I need my red shirt to be orange do you think bleach would make it orange
Unfortunately bleach tends to turn reds to pinks, so I don’t think you could achieve orange...

Can I change the color of a bright red sweatshirt to a light pink color. How could I make it look faded?
Absolutely! You can always drizzle the solution onto the sweatshirt (which gives me an idea for a video...) rather than soaking it to give it a different look. Using bleach to remove the color will give a faded look for your sweatshirt!
Chlorine also bleaches clothes!
