This isn't a great camera, nor is it terrible. I think it probably is forgettable, because in a few years Canon would release its first consumer EOS Rebel featuring tennis player Andre Agassi, and once those hit the market, everyone was scrambling to catch up.
If it doesn't autofocus, at least you have an ME Super. It WAS actually the first AF SLR. The starting price included the 35-70mm AF, an excellent lens adapted for autofocus. The slider was used to set the lens' maximum aperture, but there was only one lens available. The contacts below the back cover were for an optional data back, and the viewfinder indicators worked with any lens (focus assist).
I assume future autofocus lenses like the one you show didn't actually autofocus was because the 4 sr44s in the body couldn't power the lens motor. The same 5 contacts are there, which had my hopes up, but just want to be sure. Thanks.
You're correct. I attached an autofocus lens from a Pentax SF-1, and it did NOT autofocus. And the ME F lens didn't autofocus on the SF-1. Both fit mechanically on each other's camera bodies but worked only as manual focus lenses.
A review on the 43-86mm would be great there isn’t much on that lens on UA-cam. At least regarding a legit review. I own one I’ve never used because just like the early Nikkor pre AI 50mm f/1.4 it apparently has a bad reputation.
I should find out if my ex-roommate still has that lens and have him send it to me. I recalled him getting some decent shots with it "back in the day." He was using a Nikon FM.
Heya! I recently got this lens for a really cheap price, somewhere around the $30 dollar mark. Got a question though. Is the focusing wheel at manual mode always kinda hard to turn? Unfortunately my copy has some rust around the lens. And I think the focusing wheel at the front is still connected with the autofocus motor even though it’s in manual mode, either that or the motor and focus wheel has some rust inside resulting a hard-to-turn focus wheel. Anyway, really neat video! Got lots of information from this small video right here. Hope you continue to make this sort of content! 👏👏
Yes, focusing the lens via that front collar is somewhat stiff, because you're turning the gears by hand. Unlike later autofocus lenses, it doesn't disengage the autofocus gears.

I also thought that it was the first autofocus SLR, but I wasn't 100% certain. Thanks.
I dont remember the camera either I was using a Pentax Me Super at the time and when the Me Super Program came I bought it as well. I kept ASA 200

@@CameraTalkVideos Alright then! Thank you so much! 🙏
Where did you get that scale ?
I found this USPS scale at a thrift shop. I think that I paid $7 for it. It runs off of a 9-volt battery.
first!
