  • In this video I review my build of an Alviso scull boat which was also referred to as the South Bay Sneak Boat. This is a plywood variant of a traditional duck scull. The original design was a framed, flat bottomed, painted, plywood boat designed for sculling in very shallow water. I altered the design somewhat, adding a slight vee to the bottom and eliminating the frames. It's a good introduction to scull boats and includes a little duck sculling action from my video archives.

You say you are not a "high end UA-camr" but you are the perfect UA-camr: someone excited to show something in a positive and informative way. Very cool, thanks!❤

Well thank you very much. I appreciate that. However, the excitement is long since over. Back when I was building my fleet of little boats 10+ years ago... I was very very excited. Even though I don't need one, I'm getting close to building an all fiberglass scull, if I can decide on a design. maybe a next year project? After the 18' aluminum maybe?

I have an original Alviso 'Aeolus' Scull made by Bill Grunwald. Its great that you made one from that design.

Thats remarkable! Do you know what year it was built and do you still use it?

The Audio is actually pretty good in this one Troy! I'm curious what kind of inappropriate sticker you were blurring out on your strongback there haha! I'm just kidding of course. I appreciate hearing the build process.

My son bought me a gopro 11. The audio on it is not bad for an action camera. However, knowing what I know now, I'm not sure I would ever buy a gopro again. The overheat extremely fast, like 10 to 20 minutes. It's really quite ridiculous. Video quality is great... while it lasts. I can't tell you how much time I've wasted trying to make it work. Only way is to power it off auxiliary power. Yeah... the blur. That was a mistake. I need to try and fix that. Thanks Jeff.

Did adding the vee to the bottom help with tracking?

I can't say for sure as I don't have a flat bottom to compare it too. However it's pretty common knowledge that a vee bottom tracks better than flat. Adding a keel or multiple chines may do the same thing?

Adding a vee to a stitch and glue boat does help significantly with bottom rigidity and strength.
