Shadowhunters s. 1-2: Matthew Daddario saying "something"

  • Hearing Matthew Daddario say "something" is a hobby of mine, so here are all the clips of him saying so in the first two seasons of Shadowhunters.
    For the record, I'm an ESL speaker and my pronunciation of pretty much everything is guaranteed worse than his, so this isn't mockery, it's fannishness. :-)

      I had never noticed that there were so many variations, but I've noticed his weird way of saying "something" especially in some season 2B episodes. He probably tries to erase the accent and speak clearly, but then maybe in other scenes he just gives up and there comes "santhing" again lol

    My main thought after watching this is "can't they think of synonyms for 'something'" because I think that's one of the words Alec says the most in this show, as you've proven. His accent comes out sometimes and it's just so pure. His RAW interviews made me realize just how strong his accent can be (but I'm American so sometimes I miss it; the NY accent is not generalized American one, obviously, so it still differs from what I hear day to day).

    • @kattahj

    YES! I am so glad there is someone out there who appreciates they way he says that word as much as i do. I didn't actually notice how many different ways he says it, my personal favorite being when he completely omits the "m" so it comes out more like "suthing", but there are moments where he manages to get that "m" in there.

    • @kattahj
      @kattahj  7 років тому +4

      Heather W It varies a lot, sometimes it's almost "sohim". And one thing I noticed when I made this video is that if he says it twice in a row, at least once he'll omit the M. I think that falls more naturally for him. And likewise, I'm glad to find someone else who enjoys this! Though I've been pestering my friend R enough that she's kind of on board too. :)

    • @TheBrandiElizabeth
      @TheBrandiElizabeth 7 років тому +4

      it's like he tries to say it without letting his lips touch. also: i didn't realize til now how much they actually make him say it. i wonder if they do it on purpose lol.

    I am not a native english speaker but even I noticed the way he pronounces "something". You guys have no idea how many times he throws me off with his pronounciation (and it is not just because of "something"). For the longest time I thought he says "Even if I did feel the same for you" (at 1:27). Is it his NY accent? He confuses me but I find it really interesting.
    Thanks for the compilation! I love it!

    • @7Mushrooms7
      @7Mushrooms7 7 років тому +7

      It's the new york accent I think. I have trouble understanding some things he says in a lower tone or faster. Sometimes it looks like he chews the syllables lol At 1:27 when I first heard it I thought it was "Even if I did feel sorry for you" pronounced in a weird way, which didn't make any sense lol I'm not a native English speaker either.

    Omg I have to tell you this story. I was watching an interview with Jake Gyllenhaal when he pronounced "something" the exact way Matt does at 2:08 and I was like "wait, it sounds way too familiar..is he from NY too?". Quick google search confirmed he is indeed from NY. So thanks to your video (and Matt), I now can recognize when "something" is pronounced by a New Yorker :))))

      The proper way to pronounce "something" is "some-thing", but he pronounced is as "suh-ing" half of the time. Most New Yorkers tend to eat up half of that word. He also pronounced "probably" as "prolly".

    I’ve only ever heard “suh-ing” being used by a Brit. In reading the comments, I guess New Yorkers with their accents pronounce it this way too.

    Maybe it's because we are both American, but what is unique about the way he says "something"

    • @kattahj
      @kattahj  7 років тому

      ilikeyourkeyblade Half the time he omits the M. Sometimes he omits most of the second syllable. But it seems to vary a lot whether people find this unusual or not!
