It is amazing. Everything he does is. I’m a huge Avery fan. I think what people mean is.... all them runs on this particular song, are not necessary. It doesn’t serve the melody or story/feel of the song. His voice is SO amazing, he could’ve literally made the room stand still if he sang it straighter, held some more big notes and did a few of his signature runs here and there.
I love Avery’s voice & I’ve been following him since 2012, when he was on the voice. To me he is a better singer than most of the top male singers today. He is the complete package & then some!! However, in this song he did way too many riffs & runs (R&Rs). That vocal flexibility is what he is known for, but sometimes less is more. Some verses are meant to be clean & simple; not complicated. Riffs & runs are highlights & high points in a song. Everything can not be a highlight, or it loses its impact. I still luv this song by the late, great Donny Hathaway & I still very much enjoyed Avery singing it. But I do know IMHO, that it would have been even better with less R&Rs. Check out his video where he sings the National Anthem ; he intrinsically knew exactly where to put the R&Rs for perfect effect & he reduced the length & frequency of them. The results was a masterpiece,vocal performance. I pray he gets the big break & recognition he very much deserves real soon.

Fun fact, I thought Donny wrote this song, but Leon Russell wrote it, Leon was a great artist but No One did just to this song like Donny until Avery.

Honestly has the best runs in the entire world. Trust me, I know how big of a claim that is, but I firmly believe it nonetheless. They're so connected and smooth, they go through multiple parts of his voice sometimes, his dynamics change within his runs, the runs themselves are very complex and he switches things up a lot, and does it all on the fly. But most importantly, you can tell that its not to show off. Its his paintbrush on how he expresses what his soul is feeling. For him to not do runs would be to take away his paintbrushes. So grateful to be living in the same time period as this man.

It's all in the timing in a song for runs and he perfects that just listen at the music and the words you have to have room for runs or know how to ease them in and he knows...👌

u can tell he studies Beyoncé heavily. Her influence is strong in this one. He resonates like her and makes sure he doesnt lift his larynx (like 99.9% of other singers do)... he does have some control problems though believe it or not that he hides with runs. U can tell in some spots he replaces runs so he doesnt crack

Not a hater man he just understands music and some things are too much. His vibrato is too much at times and he goes up and down in the middle of the note when it doesn’t need to be.

Runs are his thing though. That's how he changes up the song. It's his own little thing.
yeah well he's gotta tone it down. He can do runs but he did way too many and he didn't get to show off his voice. It was as if he needed to riff in order to not crack his voice which I know isn't the case.
