Never a dry eye for me when I hear Tommy playing this song. His story of how he and Chet Atkins (the songwriter of this great piece) played this song on the album they did together, at 3 a.m. in the morning in their pajamas. Later that morning Chet was taken from his home for a hospital procedure on his brain cancer. It was the final song ever recorded into an album by Chet in his unbelievable and storied career.

I've often thought that when it comes to writing words for melodies, there are "tell me" lyrics and there are SHOW ME lyrics: Show me is better every time: It's the difference between "I love you, I love you so much" and .... well, my all-time favorite 'show me' lyric by Cindy Walker. Words that persuaded Ray Charles to record an all-country album that baffled his R&B fans, while expanding his base by millions of listeners. Giants of Country are still in his debt, as Vince Gill said recently. Yes, words like these by Ms Walker: "You give your hand to me, and then you say goodbye, I watch you walk away beside that lucky guy, you'll never, never know -- the one who loves you so. Well, you don't know me." I thought of this truism as I read your evocative words: that when you hear this song "I can see the foggy covered mountains, smell the pine trees and imagine the Nantahala River, flowing, dancing, bubbling along. I use to play this and now need to get back at it and try the new variations he put in this time. Having to keep fixing cars and rvs to "buy time to play" (and study) guitar. This is one of my favorite tunes, lots of heart.
