To be clear, that 300,000 years is an average, not a rule. And some facts to help you sleep at night, 1) scientists are not fully in agreement as to the full extent of the effects of the poles flipping. Some believe that like this short suggests, it might be horrifically life changing, making sunlight far more dangerous, making animals very confused, and destroying electronic devices. On the other hand, many others believe the flip will be far more subtle and the differences may be almost unnoticeable on the ground level, leaving electronics still working, animals not quite as confused, and only slightly more likely to get sunburned. 2) There's not really a big concensus on how much the magnetic field will weaken, some believing it will be 90% weaker, others thinking it may be far less weak. 3) The one thing they do seem to agree on is that it will take quite a long time to flip, thousands of years even, and most seem to believe that it won't be happening anytime in our lifetimes. 4) This has happened numerous times in the last give or take 20 million years, and we're all still here and alive, so it couldn't be world ending. The extra solar radiation will more than likely just cause some skin irritation in long sessions of exposure. 5) We have time. Even if the flip ends up messing with the technology we CURRENTLY have, by the time the flip starts, humanity will have had plenty of time to develop our tech to still work during the flip. It's also supposed to be a slow and gradual process over the course of thousands of years, which would mean that it's not like all the entire world's internet and power grids are suddenly going to explode and stop working at any moment. If anything, people will likely notice some interference early on and engineers will no doubt work out ways to correct or compensate for this interference.

Imagine we’ve been in the weaker magnetic field stage for a couple thousand years and the magnetic field is actually much stronger than what we think it is as a consequence.

An interesting thought, It's probably not the case though.
If scientists know there have been pole shifts, it's probably because they can measure or observe the changes it caused in the past and therefor what the weakened magnetic field looks like.

@@WhatIsSanity I know scientists are good at observing the past, but i'm pretty certain they can't actually really detect different strengths of the magnetic pole in DIFFERENT PERIODS OF TIME, Especially not exactly accurately since there is certainly a certain magnitude higher than about a 6 minute gap consistently between each shift/strength change.

It's not overdue, it's not an exact schedule nor is it entirely consistent. Sometimes it can flip after a few tens of thousands of years but sometimes it can take well over a million, it just averages out to once every 300 years.
It's like trying to figure out the next time you'll get into a car accident, not an exact science and when it does start to flip it'll take thousands of years as its gradually weakening. We'll have dozens of lifetimes to fix any potential damage it will do and it's not like we'll just wake up one day with all electronics malfunctioning... Sounds a lot more dramatic than it actually is.

I'm not entirely sure how the whole system works. Even looking at different videos to explain how they work, well they don't exactly explain how they work lol.
If you have some great sources, I would gladly take them.
But basically to me, auroras are the results of the deflection of a little part of charged cosmic particles towards the poles, thanks to the magnetic field. Those particles then excite the high atmosphere gases and boom colors!
Fine...but as this video says, the magnetic field won't end. It will be highly diminished (and again, not even sure about the "highly"!). It will probably be a multi-pole thing pretty much all around the world, until everything is stable again, but inverted compared to before.
So it will be the same as before : a weaker deflection, towards many different points of the Earth. But weaker : so instead of deflecting, more particles will actually hit the earth, and so excite the particles and boom, more colors!

Fun Fact: Our North pole right now is technically the magnetic south. Vice versa with the south pole. So when a compass is pointing North, it's actually South. Also the magnetic pole shift could be tomorrow or in many lifetimes past ours. The chances of it happening now is definitely higher than the chances of it happening a while ago but it'd probably not come in our life time so there's no need to worry.

This is happening because the currents in the core travel opposite of Earth's rotation,. hence their north poles (by the right hand rule) are in opposite directions (approximately). However, this means the geographic poles align with a compass, because opposites attract. But after the flip, the magnetic and geographic poles will match up.
The magnetic North of a compass point to the magnetic South of the Earth that is actually 400km (approx) from the North pole (rotational North) of the Earth. Btw both are moving 😅

Like, from magnetic field starting to weaken, through the polarity flip and until the field re-stabilized. That took 3 millenia. Not the duration of stable magnetic field between polarity flips.

Okay so the pattern for the last 2m years is that every 300k years there is a flip. And from your infographic, it seems to have at least happened five times so it must be somewhat reliable to assume that we should've had a flip 480k years ago... Meaning we are 480k years late from the usual time of flip and a flip could happen any time... Thanks a lot for that food for thought.
