    It wounds me to see what has become of the Lusitania.
    She was magnificent for her time, and, without her, Titanic wouldn't exist, yet she gets barely a scrap of the love that Titanic does.
    An unexplored wreck site of an underrated disaster.
    A terrible shame. Many thanks to you, Mike, for spreading more word of her.

      Laymen confuse her for Titanic simply because of her four funnels. it's sad that only reason why people were out to discover her in the first place is financial gain. She doesn't get neerly the respect Titanic does.

I understand how it would feel pretty badass to have clubs made from something famous, but not from the actual pieces recovered from a tragedy. If it was like a hull plate from the Lusitania that was removed in dry dock and wasn't attached during sinking, sure.

    Have seen the Anatole propeller while at the hotel for QuakeCon years ago. Needless to say, was actually a bit shocked when I read the plaque next to it. I'd actually passed by it many times without realizing what it was because I just figured it was a mocked up sculpture or just a random ship's scrapped propeller. Still, it was a really cool sight to see.

    Depth charges...... During WW2 German subs hunted for British shipping in the area where Lusitania was sunk. British escorts would on occasion acquire asdic contact on the Lusitania and with the strong currents this would sound like a real target with motion. This is called the doppler effect and if the tracking party doesn't have a good plot the ship would attack with depth charges with some of those being set to deep to explode before hitting the bottom.

    My theory, for the second explosion is quite simple. Superheated boiler + incoming ocean water = thermal explosion, which would also help explain why they lost the ability to control the helm and critical ship systems started failing almost immediately. A boiler blowing would have ruined at least some of the steam pipe systems, and steam was the lifeblood of Lucy.

    A smashing calm look at the history of this great ship. I agree with you that the depth charges are almost certainly WW2 in origin as the Western Approaches were U boat haunts in the war. Was Lusitania carrying munitions? Almost certainly, the USA was an incredibly important manufacturer of war supplies at that stage in the war and a fast liner is the ideal transport to outrun the U boats. A sad loss of life. Good work Mike, thanks

    Its intersting that the Lusitania was in exellent shape when they found her. There are drawings the divers made showing an intact hull. She collapsed later on mostly because of scavenging her Hull for salvage. During the 1920s after giving up plans to salvage and even raise the wreck the british used her for target practice using depth charges to stop people from telling storys about her cargo and Diving to her. And maybe to cover things up. Really interesting theme for a video, Mr Brady. The story of what happened to the wreck! She wasn't always in that rough shape!

    • @PersephoneDaSilva
      @PersephoneDaSilva 2 місяці тому +10

      Mike said it was due to the fast currents in the shallow water. The same thing happened to Andrea Doria. Even though AD sank in 1956, the ship has already collapsed and has pretty much been torn apart by the currents. Doria's happened faster because they also used aluminum.

At that time the propeller had not yet been put on permanent "display" and it simply sat out in the grass of one of the courtyards, with no sign or plaque to indicate where it was from. I was shocked when I found out that it came from the wreck of Lusitania, and immediately went back to the courtyard to get some pics of it. The true cause of America's entry into the Great War: The Zimmermann Telegram was a coded message sent by German Foreign Secretary Arthur Zimmermann to the German Minister to Mexico in January 1917. The telegram proposed a military alliance between Germany and Mexico against the United States. It offered Mexico financial support and helped to regain lost territories in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Germany also asked Mexico to help persuade Japan to join the Central Powers.

      Not quite. The German government had decided at the same time to resume unrestricted warfare at sea, the same situation that had made the Lusitania a target just because it was a British-flagged ship. This time though (February 1917) U.S. flagged ships would also be at risk if they steamed or sailed into the zone that Germany had laid out, essentially encircling the British Isles and allowing them to dock only at Falmouth, by way of a "safe passageway" into that port which was a very narrow sea lane. (If anyone can access the New York "Times Machine", it is described on page one of 1st February 1917).
      Obviously the Germans were unaware that the Zimmerman Telegram had been intercepted just prior to their announcement of resumption of unrestricted warfare at sea, and those two combined were the last straw for President Wilson and the U.S. Government.

    • @brittakriep2938

    • @jcohasset23
      @jcohasset23 26 днів тому

      @@ktipuss The irony of the Zimmermann Telegram was of course that Mexico was in no position to side with Germany and go to war again with the US due to Mexico being still in the midst of the Mexican Revolution, which was essentially a civil war that lasted from 1911 to 1920. Because of how poor American-Mexican relations were at the time due to Pancho Villa's raid into New Mexico in March 1916 and the responding yearlong Mexican Expedition of American troops into Mexico the Zimmermann Telegram was a plausible ploy, even if Mexico would have very likely lost badly if the two countries had gone to war again.

    I remember reading about the unexploded depth charges in the Lusitania section of Ballard's book _Ghost Liners,_ which also describes his coal dust hypothesis. And honestly, I'm fairly inclined to believe that hypothesis: combustible dust (and coal dust is *incredibly* combustible) is a very real explosive hazard responsible for numerous industrial disasters, the Lusitania's coal bunkers (which, per Admiralty specifications, were arranged to act as shields for her machinery) would have been rife with dust and slack coal so near the end of her voyage, and the smuggled war materiel would more likely have been hidden amongst the ship's supplies, luggage, etc. than anywhere near where the torpedo hit.

    • @SaltimusMaximus

    Hey Mike, I'm a big fan of your videos and have learnt so much about the titanic, but want to learn more about the lusitania. I am just shocked to see the condition of the wreck

      Im not even sure I can say this correctly...
      Churchill laid mines down over where Lusitania now lay... to prevent anyone from seeing the site.
      I once went on a BENDER to hunt down diving documentaries that went to the Lustiania. I found 1 documentary series... and the episode involving the Lusitania was missing. The site where she lay.. Churchill put a label on it.. as a type of War Crime site.. and anyone is forbidden from going there.
      (In short, whatever Churchill decided to do with Lusitania... it was pretty damn bad. Thats ontop of the Inquiry into her demise was a H U G E attempt to have it fall on Turner SOLELY or the U-20. They never mentioned and or completely skipped over / ignored why she never got any help. -- Despite other Liners of her type being assisted...)

    Interesting video, Lusitania is among my favourite ships ever built. Does anyone know what became of John Light's footage of Lusitania's wreck in the 1960s? From what I understand he was actually able to shoot footage of the wreck, but it's obviously quite poor quality and to my knowledge no digital copies exist. It would be interesting if this footage could be recovered, it would offer a view of the wreck before as much deterioration had set in. The last reference I can find to someone claiming to have seen the footage is in forum posts from the early '00s.

    Although i don't think diving history is your thing. You should do a video on those dive suits because that's crazy. Love your videos ❤️

    Are there any descriptions of the Lusitania from the first dive? I can't imagine they could see much from that but it would be interesting how the ship looked 20 years after sinking.

    An interesting note from the 1935 dive, which I believe there was only a single dive, was that the diver had the unsettling experience of coming across bodies on the wreck, which drifted towards him. If this was indeed the case, and I believe it was, that might account for there only being a single dive on the wreck.

    I proposed to my then-girlfriend beside Lusitania's propellor in Liverpool. She was dumb enough to say 'yes', and she's now my wife. We took our honeymoon on the Queen Victoria, which I'd passed by in Cobh on May 15th, 2015, whilst I was there for the centenary of Lusitania's sinking. Funny how life has coincidences like that.

    My grandparents many years ago had a big leather covered cushion from Lusitania that had been picked up off the beach after it sank and given to them. It supposedly fell apart years later and was thrown away 😞

    I can’t remember where I read this, but I did read a report from a log entry of a British warship supposedly recorded in the area of Lusitania. The log entry recorded making several passes to depth charge a sonar contact to be a U-boat, but discontinued with the note “likely shipwreck”

    Robert Ballard found the third propeller in a UK scrap yard “to be melted” pile and even had himself filmed touching it. The yard owner refused to pull it from the pile despite knowing what it was since it was just “scrap metal” to him and Ballard didn’t have the cash immediately on him to buy it. It was gone before the day ended, as I understand it.
