The history of Blaster Master goes so much deeper and so much more fascinating than this. Blaster Master was one of the NES games that got a Worlds of Power novel written about it, along with other games like Mega man 2 and Metal Gear. Those books were always hilarious to read since they never had much story to go on and always had to make a lot of plot points up. This was doubly the case for Blaster Master as the author made up entire characters, aliens, and story arcs that weren't in the game.
But the difference with Blaster Master is how that weird old kids novel somehow became canon. A sequel for the PS1 called Blaster Master Blasting Again had you playing as the children of Jason and a original character from the book named Eve. Years later Inti Creates would start developing several retro inspired Blaster Master Sequels that retell the story entirely and incorporate the elements from the book. But here's the craziest part and the thing that completely blew my mind... in the 3rd Blaster Master Zero game, Jason literally meets the main character Kane Gardner from the Japanese version of Blaster Master Chō Wakusei Senki Metafight. And he's the original driver of the tank. I know that no one else is a big of a Blaster Master nerd as me and probably didn't notice or didn't care, but when I saw that blue hair and realized Kane Gardner was the Japanese Blaster Master main character got so excited.
Sorry for rambling, I love this game.

Another secret for at least the NES version of this game: on bosses if you pause the game at the right frame on a grenade explosion on the boss, the explosion will continue to do damage while paused; wait long enough, unpause, and the boss will die. Not sure if that was carried over to ports/remakes though.

I'm amused this game even got a bunch of sequels considering the early attitude around it, including a remake of the original, restoring the original story premise, and then got even more sequels

I love this game. If it weren't for the nes version and the ones on playstation we wouldn't have gotten the reimagining versions of it:
    Blaster master zero 1, 2 and 3. 😊

Blaster Master was one of my favorites for the NES (I even have the novelization). I found it disappointing that they remade it with an anime aesthetic, but when you pointed out that the original game's plot was retooled for Americans it made sense why. I never knew that before.

WOW! I've never heard a game so poorly explained! And heard such a shitty attempt to excuse BAD game design and BAD game play as "fun." Master Blaster COULD and SHOULD have been great. Bad back-end work make this game a shit show.
