Fray’s performance of the toccata: slow, significant voice separation, multiple inflections of touch/interpretation, and a startling amount of respect for what could be interpreted as minimalist melodies that blossom into romantic ideas of tenderness and loss. Only his performance convinced me of the greatness of this piece as a romantic epic
Just the most splendid and dazzling interpretation. Fray has a certain virtuosity but it’s tempered with an austere modesty and ability to be communicate with the most profound emotional delicacy. Such an exciting talent.
Fascinating, or more than that, a GENIUS interpretation. The voices are so clear and beautifully intonated that is unbelievable. The control that he has of tone and sound texture is infinite
I find this interpretation absolutely fascinating. There are of course differing conceptions as to how Bach should be delivered on a modern concert grand. For me the criterion is simply this - a performance must live and speak to me, Fray achieves this splendidly. Consequently I have no rigid opinions to expound concerning period and style when a performance is truly engaging.
Yes I tend to agree. It is part of the beauty of those pieces that they may be played in so many different ways in terms of articulation, dynamics ... I just listened to one version of Sokolov which was super fast - whilst I can admire the virtuosity it actually touched me less than this one.
Every once in a very rare while, a musician of David"s extraordinary calibre comes along and the alchemy of composer and pianist/musician break even in the most wonderful & musically spiritual collaboration. David's insight and understanding of Bach is simply profound and a gift to any Bach lover. Thank you David for another enriching jewel of a performance. Your African Antipode💛
Yes, nr 6th initial fugue and final guigue... thats not baroque, not classic, thats pure romantic expression, 100 years ahead of his time. And Davids slow tempi allows to taste it deeply. Both composer and performer... beautiful.
This is entirely right, sensitive and wholesomely Bach. This is such extraordinary music, beautifully voiced in its execution and giving a deep insight into the great man. I love the judicious use of pedal that others over indulge unfortunately.
Une conception - architectonique! Géniale. En plus, détails de diamant véritable..............des pensées de music eternelle, sous une voûte céleste........Merci D F
This is a very sensitive and enjoyable interpretation. We are creating a new art form by performing Baroque music on a 20th/21st century Steinway or other fine modern instruments. The harpsichords and clavichords of Bach's day could not perform the graduations of dynamics or touch we have available to us now.
Insane, thought i knew this recording, but that must have been only the first part. Thanks so much for sharing, he is the best, in optima forma here 😍😍😍
So beautiful! The pianist must really, really, really understand the full nature of the music to perform it this well. This goes in to "Favorites". Many thanks! (from Canada)
Thank you so much David, I really really enjoyed listening and watching you playing this, it’s absolutely and utterly beautiful and amazing too. You are so talented and seriously amazing too. Please stay safe and well too xxxx Mags ❤❤❤❤❤

interrupting this magnificent interpretation of Bach which speaks so much to the soul and which uplifts our humanity in us, is on UA-cam's part a dreadful negation of art, in addition to a gigantic vulgarity with the only one goal: to collect money of pubicites. It's a big big shame . Shame on YT !!
On the other hand the fact that this magnificent interpretation is directly and freely accessible to anyone having internet access, that is, billions of human beings, is a wonderful thing, don't you think?
Love that sarabande, deliciously intricate. In saying that, I often find the pianists' egos in demonstrating virtuosity leads to excess speed to the detriment of the subtleties of harmony especially in terms of the suspensions carrying from one chord to another for instance which Bach uses a lot... This gets lost in too much speed. I can see Fray attempt at slowing down on the repeat of the first part of the marvellous Gigue and taking the time to make things ring... It's so much better. I often think of people in those days, without cars and planes, walking and who thought nothing of walking for days to go from A to B... As Bach did on several occasions to go and listen to organ masters... Perhaps they lived at a slower pace overall... The Tempo di Gavotta seems pretty erratic to me, aside drom the fact that Frey simplifies the first notes as equal whereas they're clearly written as unequal. Overall these guys like Frey are very good but they tend to approach things too forcefully to my taste. A little brutish. I have to conclude Perahia is vastly superior on this one.
Fascination but 5:39 to 6:01 I absolutely disagree, this should be the culminating point of this opening , to be played with maximum intensity (not discretion)

Pardon me if I repeat a comment I made on another video: "Life is too short to play Bach's music too fast." This is simply perfect.
😂😂😂
This must be one of the stupidest things I’ve read on UA-cam.
Totally agree. This is one of the finest of the Bach clavier partitas and I love the slower and more expressive rendition here.

This might be be greatest thing Bach ever wrote for the harpsichord next to the Goldberg Variations.

Magnificent interpretation, no question JS Bach's crown jewel of Partitas. Beautiful sentiment evoked in this performance. Thank you
