I remember visiting my first Guaridan Structure towards the Caolsack Nebula. Utterly striking, as soon as I found "Guardian Structure" 100,000 LS from the star, I made a b-line for it. I was memorised by cyan bloom and sleekness of the metal. Add to that the atmospheric score and I fell in love with exploring Guardian Structures. I am still exploring the galaxy, ever seeking further remains of their lost civilisation.

So sad that they didn't put there efforts into planets and exploration (for me, at least). I was so disappointed when they broke the planets. Seeing ants old footage brought back some great memories.

Found a red supergiant (150ish sol radii) 3700 light-years above the galactic plane with a single metal world in close orbit. The backlighting and radical color contrast from the planet surface is burned into my head
I love being out in the black in Elite it's truly amazing, I remember heading out to Barnard's loop for the first time - in those days it felt much more dangerous and scary but was before permit locks. I guess Frontier never got around to sorting out what it was doing with the permit locks, yet another unfinished missed oppourtunity. Still amazing memories of the views and the experiences of being somewhere truly remote and special!
Thank you for all the wonderful exploratory and informational videos over the years. You have been a wonderful guide and advocate for the community, since at times, Frontier Development can be so confusing and mysterious.

I have a love/hate relationship with elite. I absolutely hate the grind and I get burned out once in a while but I always come back after a few months. It’s a blast, especially in VR and thanks to a workaround even on foot Odyssey gameplay is doable in VR.
Sometimes I think about reinstalling but then I remember it was just grind for credits to get a bigger ship to grind for credits. I know the comments in Elite videos are always downers, but it's because we all wanted to see this game succeed and instead it took a REALLY weird course. Did they ever fix the bug where some planets had repeating tesselating surfaces, but Frontier said they wouldn't fix it? the mind boggling thing for me is how we still can't land on planets with atmospheres. The flight models don't need to be accurate. Our ships act like they have drag while in space for Pete's sake.
Looking from the outside in, it seems after Odyssey didn't pan out, Frontier gave up trying to develop Elite. A lot of patches and enough basic content to keep people playing, but no plans to expand gameplay and no revamps of existing systems; just basic cosmetics and a war to distract its userbase from the underlying problem. They look like they're done building the game. (Which is unfortunate since they have a functional galaxy at their disposal and a sizeable fanbase left)
I frequently think about redownloading this game but then I remember that I already have like a billion credits in game and all the credit based ships and modules. The only content left in the game for me to unlock is faction ships and engineering modules, all of which is an exceptionally painful process to unlock. It's not worth getting a fleet carrier either because you have to play the game like a second job to maintain the credit upkeep cost of the ship. I can't even mindlessly go mine asteroids because things like the core scanner is still broken after like 5 years, space trucking is an absolute snoozefest, combat is a rough experience at best (where you can't play with other players because horrible connection issues), and exploration is ruined by nerfed planet generation and permit locked systems. There is a huge number of people who want to play this game in 2023 but fdev is really trying their hardest to kill it
To be fair, the feeling of ships having “drag” in space is mostly from flight assist. If you turn it off, the ship behaves more realistically, but it will be harder to pilot. FDev probably faces things like this a lot, where making things fun AND realistic is a balancing act

I remember other space games that did this too, players learned to love it and there was a lot of skill. Now it's just whoever has the best engineered ship and can rotate faster wins. amazing vid chap o7 near the centre of the galaxy myself and enjoying the place doing the eco rout way so going to be out a few years .keep up the good work and fly safe
I have to say, where they put Colonia is beautiful. It is such a pretty area of the galaxy. I'm making my way to the center for the first time, and it is just wild seeing the density of stars. My first longer distance exploration was to see Pleiades. That area is also pretty, but not quite as striking as Colonia. If you can still go above the galaxy, I'm going to have to figure out how. That sounds amazing. EDIT: I did go above the galaxy and it did not disappoint. I also found a planet with an incredible close up view of a pulsar (neutron) and a red dwarf in the sky. One of my favorite finds is two moons that orbit so close, that you can go to one to the other, and there is no space in between. You see yourself ascend and then descend with no space inbetween.
The Veil Nebula was my first destination outside the bubble! That was in the very early days, when even that now small trip was a journey lol. I then found a cool cone shaped Nebula, then worked my was towards a cool looking line of stars, off in the distance, discovering the Nebula along the way, then kept going towards what turned out to be the Heart and Soul Nebulae lol. Back then these areas were still unexplored! I ended up making it to Formadine Rift, before turning back. This was weeks of gameplay, back then! Months lol. Nowadays with the engineers and long jump ranges, we are jumping past all of ED's heavenly glory! ObsidianAnt thanks for this video! It was very nostalgic!
The last few things I did in this game before taking a long break was going for the big three ships (Federal Corvette, Imperial Cutter, Anaconda) and have them all outfitted and engineered and one final goal was doing my own personal voyage to Beagle Point using the Distant Worlds II route. And it was some of my most memorable moments in the game. And right now: hardly anything to do other than a few bounty hunting and rescue missions on occasion. If only there were atmospheric landings like that on Mars and Earth I might start playing again.
Reminds me of my own time with the game. Gotten the Cutter, but never outfitted it fully pimped and didn't do one of those long range travels. Atmospheric planet landings are something I've been wanting ever since it was released.

That info can change from update to update, but players can always do their own testing, which is ALWAYS the only way to be certain, about anything, really. E:D at present has no mechanic in place to "earn" an unknown permit, as far as I know, after 7 years of play.

@@trashcan7340 yeah i stopped playing years ago and when i got interested in space games again i started playing nms and Everspace again but it doesn't feel the same. also tried other games like X4 but to me picking up ED felt completely natural to me from controls to menu's and stuff like X4 the complete opposite. i havnt returned to ED yet partly because of Frontiers focus and partly because its a pain to set everything up again (hotas controls etc.) but the urg is still there and so far NO other Game has felt close to ED yet.
HEGEIA YU-O D6-10 (6 B B) is personally still my favorite discovery. 'tiny Ice planet orbiting a no atmo AW orbiting a tiny WG with huge rings.' and i still have it as my background with. although i stopped playing years ago so idk if its still great, also it depends on the time you visit, if the Ammonia world isnt close to directly above/below the Water Giant's rings its probably not that interesting.
Are you able to land and explore planets with just the base game or do you need to get any of the additional stuff? As in the purchasable add-ons, not the ones they've released for free
There's nothing so grand and inspiring as meeting face to face with the ancient beings that coexist with my grandpa. Always a treat to visit him at the retirement home

But since the updates do any of these places still exist, would they still be there in Odyssey or are they only available in the Horizon version of the game? It’s a pity Fdev never got round to finishing whatever it was they were planning for the Horse Head Nebula, maybe they should unlock that region?
I appreciate your vids Ant, but I was done with Elite after being 10th to Sag A^ & 64th to Beagle Point. Yeah I saw a lot of nice views but the direction, grind, lack of transparency and overall lack of implementation of promised features that I backed in the Kickstarter pushed me away. withOdysey and Horizont 4.0 they use new planet create engines so most of planet was recreated, loosing they unique fitcher. I don't say all planet are blank now just that we need to find intresting planets again
A very good video but I got distracted by the narrators voice, I wasnt sure why you kept varying your pitch to emphasise words that didn't need emphasising. I think I did that a while back, its prob a bit of a YT thing, but your natural voice would be excellent if you ever fancied using that with your regional accent, I have the opposite problem, too flat. Thanks for the excellent video, you really showed us what wonders are out there.
Its been years and they still haven't unlocked Horse Head, theres no way Frontier locked this for narrative reason, at this point it had to have been a bug/issue with the systems there.
doupt it.. they probably locked it for story reasons, but then never actually got around a proper story for this game. and yet they remain closed in order to leave them open for future story opportunities. kind of like how FF14 and other games leave story threads open so they could potentially pick them up again a couple expansions later and make the story feel more complecs then it actually is.
They never will. The game is on life support at best. It can't possibly go forward with the current engine. Only chance is a complete redesign and a new game. I don't think Elite has any kind of priority anymore at fdev

You're not really familiar with Frontier, are you. There have been some pleasant surprises tbh: carriers, Guardian planets....but for the most part, disappointment; and always a sense of opportunities not grasped, of potential not understood, of an utter lack of imagination. Truth is, Frontier are a mediocre outfit.
Probably the biggest wasted potential in the history of gaming. This game literally had everything going for it to be the best space game ever made. Too bad the developers were too incompetent and too apathetic towards the franchise to take it anywhere. It's been one bad decision after another since the moment the game launched.
So basically in a nut shell you have said ED did once look impressive but now doesn't and was able to explore freely now you can't,, roger copy ..I got bored of the shit grind to gain the credits to get a ship to enable me to explore more than 30ly which is what I wanted to do in the first place ..at least with elite 2 I could go anywhere and even swing by a planet for a gravity assist, AHH we'll see you again next year hopefully this will improve ,,

The implementation was sloppy at best. Also it messes with other game mechanics and design, which overall was not well received. Worst of all, did not live up to players' expectations.
Eh, ppl are real snowflakes these days. The launch was definitely Buggy shitfest, but after a few months they basically fixed all the main issues and it really extended the possibilities by a lot. But peaple will always find sth to complain to. People who actually play the game usually aren't achtually like that tho. Obsidinat Ant's comment section looks the way it does all the time because He basically was boycotting Odyssey and crying about it a lot after the launch, which of course attracted likeminded people who don't play anymore but for some Reason Always have a need to express their opinion.

June 2021 was the last time I even started the game. Horizons was the end of Elite for me, starting way back in 1984 on the C64. So much potential entirely wasted

With Odyssey all of these locations (except nebula) are broken. Cliffs and Valleys are small hills now
You can still boot the game in horizons and get the old planet geography

I put Elite Dangerous on the shelf for the last time a year ago. It's beautiful to still see your content.
Switched to No Man's Sky. They've made impressive update and take players suggestions into consideration. Unlike fdevs. It's a shame.

How do you get unlocked
The decision to reroll all of the already discovered planets and systems was a mistake.
Elite dangerous is really the posterchild for missed opportunities in a game
let's hope Fdev see this video and may then improve some eploration related things in Elite

They never will. The game is on life support at best. It can't possibly go forward with the current engine. Only chance is a complete redesign and a new game. I don't think Elite has any kind of priority anymore at fdev
@@heavybattle6650 Imagine if a lump of that huge dev effort had added a solid procedural engine for diverse meaningful plant life based on inputs from Stellar Forge and terrain maps.
Instead we got a handful of hard coded plant assets with a now removed mindless unlocking game mechanic.
You're not really familiar with Frontier, are you. There have been some pleasant surprises tbh: carriers, Guardian planets....but for the most part, disappointment; and always a sense of opportunities not grasped, of potential not understood, of an utter lack of imagination. Truth is, Frontier are a mediocre outfit.
Something i hate about Fdev is that they either restrict or ruin all the beautiful places...

Probably the biggest wasted potential in the history of gaming. This game literally had everything going for it to be the best space game ever made. Too bad the developers were too incompetent and too apathetic towards the franchise to take it anywhere. It's been one bad decision after another since the moment the game launched.
So basically in a nut shell you have said ED did once look impressive but now doesn't and was able to explore freely now you can't,, roger copy ..I got bored of the shit grind to gain the credits to get a ship to enable me to explore more than 30ly which is what I wanted to do in the first place ..at least with elite 2 I could go anywhere and even swing by a planet for a gravity assist, AHH we'll see you again next year hopefully this will improve ,,
I don’t get it, why did people not like odyssey? I mean, it gave space legs and walking on planets, something previously missing. If you don’t like the walking and landing you can still do the other stuff you always did right?
The implementation was sloppy at best. Also it messes with other game mechanics and design, which overall was not well received. Worst of all, did not live up to players' expectations.

Eh, ppl are real snowflakes these days. The launch was definitely Buggy shitfest, but after a few months they basically fixed all the main issues and it really extended the possibilities by a lot. But peaple will always find sth to complain to. People who actually play the game usually aren't achtually like that tho. Obsidinat Ant's comment section looks the way it does all the time because He basically was boycotting Odyssey and crying about it a lot after the launch, which of course attracted likeminded people who don't play anymore but for some Reason Always have a need to express their opinion.
because it was buggy as fuck, nobody wants to play a garbage FPS inside of Elite, and the graphics got downgraded buddy
PPL wanted space legs to walk on planets, explore, walk on their ships and space stations - what we got was a shitty first person shooter added to the already buggy game

Can't believe it's been over a year since I played
June 2021 was the last time I even started the game. Horizons was the end of Elite for me, starting way back in 1984 on the C64. So much potential entirely wasted
