I agree with the sentiment that the title of this video is misleading. Why not call it “5 NES homebrew games you never knew existed”? By leaving out that these are newer, unlicensed games, and using the past tense “never knew”, it suggests that the games you will cover in the video were contemporaneous with the NES. Just add the word “homebrew” and you will clear up the confusion.
I agree with your statement partially and the goal isn't to be misleading but some of these aren't homebrew games but rather games from other regions so I had to go more broad with the title. Saying homebrew would also be misleading. You know what I mean?

@@BlankSpacePub unlicensed doesnt mean homebrew does it? Look at Tengen who made unlicensed games for the NES including Tetris, Road Runner, Shinobi and many more. These were not approved by Nintendo but they were IP's owned by major studios. There is a lot of grey areas when it comes to this. Seems easier and less misleading to just keep the title as is. But should we make another similar type of video in the future perhaps more thought can go into the title. Appreciate your feedback.

Then you have Rainbow Brite which was officially licensed and created by PixelHeart which has been making all kinds of games for systems for many years. Not just someone making a game from home but a company who produces and publishes independent games. There is a lot of nuance to consider.
The only reason that Mario kart didn’t make the list is it’s just a tech demo at this point. Just Mario on a track. No racing or opponents implemented yet. A neat proof of concept though.

I knew about all of these :) I own a couple of them on cart even, but the only one I actually finished was Rainbow Brite. I never looked too closely at that Sonic port, but it seems decent. I wonder who made those RE, Sonic, and DK demakes. Thanks for continuing to shine a light into the shadows of the NES library, or something like that.
lol I knew folks like you (the diehards) would probably know most of them! As far as I can tell those remakes were all bootlegs from Japan multicarts. Though Sonic was Mario in Sonic so of course people had to hack Sonic back in. Always happy to explore the NES library, and thank you for being a supporter of the NES as well!

Homebrew games are real games, they just happen to have not been licensed by Nintendo. In fact, some homebrew games are far better than many official games that were published in the 80s and 90s.

I could see what you mean with the style! However the company who released it say its from scratch and they have other games that have also been created that way as well. A lot of newer Nintendo games have featured Sonic like Mario And Sonic At The Winter Olympics and I believe Sonic was in some of the Smash Brothers games as well

Can't believe you didn't mention Final Fantasy VII: ) Also, the Sonic game is based on an old unlicensed Chinese game called Somari - a janky Sonic 1 port with Mario player sprite and truly terrible music. Over the years various homebrew devs worked really hard to fix up the game to what we see today.
He mentioned the 386... lol.... I use to have a 486sx33 with 2 Mb Ram.... The pinnacle was the 486 dx 66 with 4 Mb Ram until the Pentium processor came out!... good times!

about getting these games, 1st you need to find them which might not be that easy (unless fakes on ebay) then 2 pray they are not expensive. sonic does look good, but i can't say i liked it on the sega.. not that i had 1 myseld that time but ok

That bootleg DKC on NES def doesn't deserve that kissass treatment. It only looks good on the surface, the controls are stiff and rigid, enemy placement is horrible and unfair, roll attack is useless and unreliable (no more rolling jumps either), missing a LOT of content and the levels are poorly thought out and forgettable. Skip this cash grab garbage unlicensed "port" at all costs.
Personally I had a lot of fun with it. It took a bit to really get it but once I did I was flying through levels. The difficulty I just chalked up to the game being "NES hard". Its probably not for everyone though which could be said about most games.

I had a list of 11 games and FF was on there. Just didn’t make the cut.
I played Sonic one in early 2000 and thought that was an official game.
It feels like it could have been. Almost plays better than the official Master System port of the game.
