Bourbon & DCS: Not Another CDU Tutorial (Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Coordinates)

  • Hello everyone.
This is the lazy minimalist DCS A-10 driver's guide to the CDU
Scroll down for timestamps for specific parts.
    (WARNING! STRONG LANGUAGE)
EDIT: around 17:05 I misspoke; the overall MRGS grid can sometimes need to be changed. For example, grid 37T is near senaki. In the PG map, the grid also might need to be changed. The grid will always be given with the UTM coordinates though, so principal is the same.
This video SHOULD be everything you need to know about the CDU and nothing you don't.
Furthermore, it includes helpful tips for using the CDU, philosophy behind the CDU to better understand its function, and examples for the learn-by-doing types.
    Table of Contents:
1:20 - Notes about keyboard (DO THIS)
2:55 - CDU Fundamentals and Philosophy
4:07 - SPI vs STEER vs WP vs MP
    6:03 - Markpoints
    7:40 - Steerpoints and SPI's
9:32 - Avionics Auxiliary Panel (AAP)
10:07 - Page Knob and Pages
    11:40 - CDU Page Layout
    13:03 - Waypoint Searching
    13:37 - Creating a Waypoint
    16:53 - Switching to UTM / MRGS
17:20 - Markpoint Example and Notes
18:17 - Desired Time on Target (DTOT)
20:14 - Wrap up and a few last notes (Not super important)

Absolutely wonderful. The penny dropped for me during this video. As a former AF navigator, I can add that the leading zero on the longitude is required because all around the Earth all longitude’s are three digits rather than the two for the latitude. There are places on the Earth where your initial number will not be a zero, but rather a one because longitude is measured to 180° both east and west.

To make things even more confusing: most (if not all) of the above can be done with the Up Front Controller (UFC). So you can change the mode to "Mark Point" or "Mission" using the UFC, and the knob on the AAP doesn't move.. brilliant!... when in doubt, turn the knob on the AAP

I just found this video while on my 3rd time relearning the A-10 after not flying it for 8 months and forgetting lots of stuff, and the CDU is always the part I can't wrap my head around. This was immensely helpful.

20:33 he said you never need to use the "nav" page. You can use the method he said earlier of searching for a specific airport, but if you use that nav page you can click "divert" and it is very useful to get to the nearest airport as fast as possible. Great for mayday situations where you need to land FAST and have to be down at the CDU for as little time as possible. You just click nav, divert, and then the airport you want to go to and it will set it as your steerpoint and give you radio frequencies, Tacan, ILS, and everything else you could need.

@15:24 "For whatever reason.." That reason is simple. There are 180 degrees of longitude. There are only 90 degrees of latitude.

Very good stuff. Thanks, I learned a lot. I've been flying the A-10 for a long time and I basically gave up on using the CDU, but now I'm going to go back and work on it a bit more. You probably are aware of this and just didn't want to get tied up explaining it in the video when it wasn't necessary, but for the coordinates the easting needs the first 0 in the case shown because there are 3 digits possible before the decimal, where for north/south there are only 2 digits possible (±180° VS ±90°). Thanks again!

Actually it's not all what You should know about CDU. The wind page is also very useful when bombing with dumb or non-gps steered bombs from higher altitude. Entering data there causes to make correction of bombing point depending of how high and from what direction You approach the target.

17:04 - If you check the F10 map you will notice that there are two MGRS grids in the Caucasus Map. There are situations where you will need to target the other grid- and there are even situations where a target can be on both grids. 38T is the most common, but I have had to add coordinates that fall under the other grid (the name of which escapes me).
All over, this is why I prefer LAT/LON, even if it's slower. Also- it's what every other jet uses.

    • @alexanderryan-jones600
      @alexanderryan-jones600 4 роки тому +2

Final note - the DIVERT function is really useful if you find yourself low on fuel or damaged. It listed airfields from nearest to the aircraft. The Off-set function you added at the end is something we're starting to see used a bit more now. Certainly it was included in the Mirage-2000C and now we're seeing that functionality come up in the F-14B. Offset targets are good when you've got moving targets by a known landmark (say a bridge).
They are fiddly but there is a good reason to have that functionality- totally get why it was skipped in this video though.
Great work, again- this is just what the community needs. Nice to see the A-10 getting some love too (in a lot of ways the HOTAS and avionics are superior to the F-16 and F/A-18, which is good considering the job it's being asked to do).

Thanks for the Tutorial, very clear and fairly concise .. very toughtful to include a Table of Contents. Some suggestions for future tutorials: speak just a bit slower, for the benefit of non-native english speakers like myself .. and when speaking about items on the HUD, apply a bit of Zoom as it is kind of hard to see the smallish HUD of the A-10 .. loved that you resisted the temptation to add background music ... thank you again and you've just earned another Subscriber :)

Cool video, I've watched many of these and was still confused, you cleared things up. So let me help you.
MGRS stands for Military Grid Reference System, UTM stands for Universal Transverse Mercater (sp), both are world wide used for locations in the military, more so than Lat/Long. The Map sheet Reference number will change depending on what part of the world you are in, and in a couple places in the DCS world will change on the mapsheet itself, sometimes you have to look close at grid lines.
Just an FYI, I'm a subscriber now.

Why would you convert a markpoint to a waypoint? So it won't be overwritten if you are using a lot of markpoints, and you need to keep it for some reason, say your flight lead has designated it as a marshalling area or IP on a very busy night, or you've discovered an area with friendly troops that weren't part of the mission brief that you want to keep track of, etc. Not likely to happen in DCS unless someone has created a nightmare mission, but in R/L it allows you to adapt to a shifting battlefield. Wish this video had been around when I first started with the A-10, awesome job!

can you make a tutorial how to add an existing waypoint into the flight plan? It could be useful if it can be done, like if you takeoff and put A10 on autopilot while going to target on multiplayer server. Then you dont have existing good flight plan in the A10 with any target coordinates. so you need to create target waypoints first and ideally you would add those custom waypoints into your flight plan? Or you would do this while on the ground at the cold start I think.

14:36, so this button always shows the next waypoint in the sequence, in this case 6. What if you are at waypoint 2, and you are told to update the location of waypoint 5 to a new coordinate? How to you do that. Also, if you click on that button, it count up, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and so on, until 50, then gives a CDU error. How do you reset that button back to 6?

The DCS manual is fantastically exhaustive and yet amazingly useless. It does a great job of saying "This is X button. X button does X. Press X button to do X when you want to do X." Which is all correct, but misses any and all information on why and when to do X to freaking start with! And without knowledge about what X is for and how to know when to use X... the manual is patently useless and a waste of perfectly fine paper (or disk space)...
