    The USS Maine wasn't sunk by a mine. It's boiler blew up. Whether the US knew it or not at the time is another topic.

    To the Beesleys. Thank you for doing this reaction video. Judging from the comments I have read, the U.S. Civil War remains very controversial in the U.S. still, after over a century and a half. Infographic, which published the video to which you react, at one point made two contradictory claims and it appeared from your faces that you realized that something was wrong. These conflicting claims are:
    1, that the war that occured in the United States in the 1860s was a civil war, and
    2, that those who fought on the Southern side were not true Americans in any sense.
    A war is called a civil war when two or more groups of persons belonging to the same country fight against each other because of some political disagreement. Therefore, in order for that war to be a civil war, the people on both the Northern and the Southern sides would need to have been Americans. However, Infrographic made the conflicting claim that those on the Southern side were not true Americans in any sense.
    The "not true Americans" claim is mistaken. The U.S. Constitution, 14th Amendment, Section 1 sets the official standard of who is a U.S. citizen: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof are citizens of the United States and of the state in which they reside.". Since those who fought on the Southern side were born or naturalized in the United States, they were U.S. Citizens according to the constitutional standard.

      They rejected their citizenship and it was given back to them by force. According to the law, they were citizens, but that doesnt change the fact that they were traitors who tried to make a new country and only remained american by virtue of getting their asses kicked into submission. It's a "civil war" because they lost. If they won, it would have been a war of secession.
      That aside, the claim is that they were unamerican, not literally not americans. And they were absolutely, unequivocally, by any definition of the word, unamerican.

      Secession immediately followed by war is pretty universally still considered a civil war. And while the "not true Americans" comment is proven technically incorrect by the 14th Amendment, they were still never in the US military and thus clearly shouldn't be included. I personally won't claim them as true Americans because they were traitors who fought to keep people enslaved and in the process killed more Americans than any war in our history but hey that's just me. Some will still fly that flag and fight to keep those statues up (often all the while claiming to be American patriots) and I will never understand. I don't see what there is to be proud of.

    @11:05 one error in this is 24 aircraft carriers. We have 11 aircraft carriers with one more on the way and 10 or 11 amphibious assault ships which do carry aircraft but are much smaller and only carry around 20planes/helicopters but they also carry a detachment of Marines and their landing vehicles.
    Only the super carriers can hold the 70+ planes.

    The 24 aircraft carriers they talk about includes amphibious assault ships. Those cannot carry the same size air wings as the 11 full size (Nimitz and Ford class carriers). They primarily carry helicopters and some VTOL variants of the F-35 (formerly Harriers).

    The US military has changed radically in my time. We had 2 year partial draft to the reserves like Ukraine does now, until Vietnam. Mobilization increased this draft number until 1973 (the last year of active draft of any kind). 1974 until now the US military is voluntary and professional, though many lower echelons of society, or even poor immigrants, find a career of 20 years or partial career for fewer years, as a great hand up. Philippine and Panamanian citizens can volunteer directly into the US military, and get credit toward citizenship. All during my time, the number of small to large bases around the world is extraordinary, and part of national strategy (forward deployment = quick reaction). The quantity and quality of arms has improved every year. Already the question at the end is moot ... WWIII has started ;-(

      @@osiiris937 True but a part of their core would have been included in the numbers for the U.S. right before the civil war. We (The U.S.) trained them. Then they would have trained their new recruits. So you can't say none of them weren't U.S. soldiers. So war breaks out and the number of Union forces has an initial dip as individual soldiers return to their home states or the whole unit just switches allegiance. This would be due to units all coming from the same area rather than mixing them together like we do now.

      I think it would be wise for everyone to remember that before the birth of the nation the colonist were considered rebels and traitors to our English Monarchs. The American revolution was difficult and not overwhelming popular. It was a damn war not an argument. And still it paved the way for all Americans and foreigners to have or try for the experience no matter who they are, what they look like, or what side they served in the past or voted for in the present:- future.

    I think it's amusing to think that the original US Navy had less total sailors than the crew of a WWII Iowa class battleship and less than half of the crew of a modern Nimitz class aircraft carrier!

    Hi James and Millie, speaking of the US military, you should rent and watch "Saving Private Ryan" starring Tom Hanks and "Lone Survivor" starring Mark Whalberg. Two of the best movies ever about the US military and the sacrifices our soldiers have made to keep the rest of us free.

    Biggest error that the original video made, that I noticed, was that they claimed the US has 24 carriers each able to carry 80 planes...which is ridiculous. The US currently has 11 nuclear powered supercarriers that can carry 80 or so planes, and then there are also 8 quite large but not nuclear powered Amphibious Assault Ships. These can carry vertical takeoff type planes like the F-35B, as well as helicopters, up to a total of around 25 aircraft or so.

      Ehh, phrasing is wrong, that’s all mainly, we have 11 super carriers, the rest are LSD’s, etc, the new class for the Marine Corps, only carrying vtol/stol capable birds. Like always. Just better ships and birds. But yeah. Phrasing is definitely wrong. Numbers are about right. For the smaller ships, numbers would be total, for the super carriers, numbers would be combat aircraft.

      @@iKvetch558 well yeah, could be some of it, but we have the most, and most capable as a whole. It’s off a little, most confusing for those who don’t know is phrasing. They probably are counting the Gerald ford class running exercises and being built, is my guess, along with our new class of amphib assault ships being built, replacing the old. Which our aphid assault are carriers for most other nations that have a carrier, very, very few have a super carrier, which makes our 11 an insane amount. And nukes on top of that. The range and power, capabilities, makes them, and their escort fleet, ridiculous

      When I saynjukes. I mean nuclear powered for those who don’t know. So a 20-25 year period without refueling for the reactor, that’s a huge benefit, miles or Nm don’t matter for fuel, just time.

      We do a lot more then just defend our neighbors, we also defend strangers, support people who are taken advantage of by warlords or enemy militias, give health supplies to people who are abused and devastated by waring groups or counties, defend those who can’t defend themselves and feed those who can’t feed themselves. We have lots of problems but we do so much to help the world and we strive to try and be better and grow from our mistakes.

      Now we defend them, but it was not always the case. We have actually invaded both of our large neighbors at various points in our history (Canada twice). Add to that various police actions in Latin America and it is a decidedly mixed record. Hopefully, those days are long over. . .

    You show some modest pride in your own country. Almost like youre embarrassed or ashamed of that n how small you believe that makes you. Dont be that way. Great Britain has been a vital partner to us and other nations in keeping the peace for many decades. Thats something to be proud of fr all Brits. Most Americans feel a close tie to you all across the pond and thats as it should be. We make great allies for tge world to loo up to. Thanks for showing this video.     The picture of the early Army is a bit nuanced. The Continental Army was authorized by Congress during the Revolution, so it has to count as the first U.S. Army -- and it was not composed of minutemen. These were uniformed, professional soldiers (more or less), composed of regiments from each of the states. The militias augmented the Continental line troops. After the Revolution, the Continental Army disbanded, because the war was over. Once the Constitution came into effect in 1789, there was a new national Army -- but it struggled to be effective as a fighting force. Troops under Arthur St. Clair actually were defeated by British-backed Native Americans in 1791, right out of the gate. The U.S. had to quickly reorganize under General Mad Anthony Wayne to win the Northwest Indian War at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794.

    In 1814 a militia stopped a British landing force in Maryland then held off the British fleet at Fort Mchenry. The once powerful British armed forces is now smaller than the US Marines. You want to really blow your mind is during WW2 the US produced more arms, ships planes and other war material that all other nations combined. It would take one month to build a liberty ship so we made them faster than Germany could sink them.

    contrary to popular teachings the war was not as much about slavery as it was states rights. There were even some northern states that had slaves.

      Wrong, by the time of the civil war no northern states did have slaves, not that Blacks we're treated equally though of course. Backers of the confederacy think that by saying it was about state's rights just wish to downplay slavery which is the most disgusting thing imaginable because those state's rights refer to the state's right to allow slavery. So state's rights is a cop out which shows how far as a society we still have to go.

    As a born and bred Southerner I take to task the way info graphics talks about the South. It seems like info graphics are northerners this is why many in the South don't really like many that come from the North. They simply have an attitude towards southerners

      As someone born in the north but from Mexican immigrant parents that bothered me as well. My culture has much more in common with the south but also what the infographics video said was just a blatant misunderstanding of American history and the civil war and the reconstruction era.

      the war was about slavery, confederates turned their back on the US and were traitors, and their silly statues after losing the war are about as valuable as dog shit.
      there are so many great things in the south, idk why people choose the confederacy as their pride.

    What I think is notable is that all wars previous to WWI were to defend ourselves and our territories. From WWI on, it has been to defend our allies. During WWII we became the super power that we are today and have since taken the lead for policing the rest of the world, much to our chagrin. Many of us would prefer to return to our isolationist roots but that is not realistic given the threats posed by others.

    Interesting fact: the Untied States National Guard was actually formed December 13, 1636, well before any of the other branches!

    They missed the Barbary wars here was well, the U.S navy here was raiding pirate bases in the Mediterranean, so there numbers went way up.
    In the Spanish-American war it was the United States who declared war. Also the USS Maine likely wasn't sunk by a mine more like a mechanical issue that caused an explosion.
    The total number of active duty personnel ranges' from 12-18 (16 million is a good middle ground) million soldiers around the end of ww2.

      Thank you for that information, USS Maine navy review board came up with mechanical boiler problem that was the reason for the sinking of the Maine.

      @@richardhenry4363 The American leadership at the time was a bunch of imperialists with nothing to imperialize so this was the cause they needed and they gripped on tight. The president at the time Theodore Roosevelt was overjoyed at this opportunity to expand. It's a real shame most Americans today have no idea about this war and even less the war of 1812.

    Britain is not just " A little country with a great past" The UK has some of the finest soldiers in the world. Our special forces (USA) were modeled after yours and train with them to this day. The UK maintains a small fighting force in modern times but could mobilize and industrialized for war at a moments notice. You are our greatest ally and veterans who have served along side you know the truth of it.

    No licenses required to buy a firearm in the USA. Permits in some States to carry them but none to buy/own them. Must be 18 to buy long guns and 21 to buy handguns and have no felonies.

    And no I’m not bitter, did 5 yrs in the USMC, I got out for political reasons, and my MOS( job) not being open to reenlistment was when the war on terror was winding down. 2010.

    When they say it's not just through military might that they are Allied made me think of the men that stayed in the Countries after World War I and World War II with their hands and their knowledge vets rebuilt the buildings redid the landscaping restored the Hospitals that were blown apart and all the other things that Americans helped rebuild from the ground up that have been torn down by the wars and that's like Russia, France Germany, Poland and various Others just all the places where the Deepest scars were Dugged they Even restored homes they restored buildings in the military's primary project after the wars was to reestablish the hospitals in the schools and the churches and NOT necessarily the homes that's just something the Soldiers felt like they needed too also do🤷🏻‍♀️ Sooo they did home restoration Also 💖🇺🇲🕊️🎉🎊🪅🥰❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

    The Population of Mexico is about 128 million people and that of Canada is about 37 million. The US population is near 332-337 million people and the birth rate is but slighly higher than that of Europe. The majority of population increase since WW2 has been from immiration with about 900,000 to 1 million emigres to the US on average each year. Despite efforts in the past to curb immgration and/or regulate it, no other country, perhaps in all of history, has sustained such a continuous volume of immigrants over its entire history as has the US. As much as half of the US Defense budget is not spent on weapons or armaments but on sustaining deployment to over 600 foreign bases (Guam to Europe, The Artic to the Tropics). An oddity of large US overseas bases is that they seperate deployed families on or near bases that resemble a microcosm of America with fast food restaurants, groceries and food items, and clothing stores that exist inside The States. So each base with churches, schools, housing and shopping resembles a version of America. It would be interesting to see a video on living on US bases overseas.

    Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times. Boomers really created what became good times and Gen X may have been the end of the predominantly strong men, while Gen Z did see a boom in strong men, I'm not sure there were enough to stop the decline into hard times. Here's hoping Alpha gets it back on track; if the media doesn't turn them into weak men and God knows they are trying.

    I realize I'll probably get flamed for this, but neither Korea nor Viet Nam were Wars. They were both Police Actions from the UN. Congress never declared war in either case. Many Viet Nam Vets have said that they weren't allowed to win.

    I have been out of the Army since 1989 and even though I'm now in my 60's if I had to I would pick up a weapon and defend my country with extreme prejudice. Nobody messes with the USA or it's friends, and yes that includes y'all.

    I didnt mind most of that video, but that war wasn't really about slavery,. Was it part of it, yes. But is was more about states rights which did include slavery. The civil war is not as simple as this video makes it.

    After the formal establishment of the present United States Army, the Regular Army remained small, tasked with manning a few harbor forts on the Atlantic coast and frontier forts in the expanding West. During wartime, the "Federal Army" swelled dramatically, consisting mostly of States' militia troops mustered into Federal service, and then sent back to their respective States after the end of conflict. The various States militia forces usually outnumbered the regular Army by five-to-ten militia for every Regular soldier in peacetime, but in the Civil War it approached a hundred-to-one.
    The mistrust of the wisdom in keeping a standing army in peacetime hobbled expansion of the U.S. Army, something that Britain feared as well in the period after the English Civil War. Conflict with French-dominated Europe and the necessity of providing security for a far-flung Empire forced the UK to maintain a sizeable standing army (although at least under Parliamentary oversight) but the United States didn't begin to seriously consider a force larger than 25,000 until nearly the end of the 1800s.

    That commentator isn’t being honest about the south in the civil war. For most of the soldiers it was about protecting their home. Very few % actually had slaves. Only the rich plantation owners had them while most of the poorer people just had their family working their small farms

      Southerners in the past fought to preserve slavery to protect their way of life. They fought to be self governing after Lincoln abolished slavery so they could overturn that law. That was the catalyst and not some bs about protecting their land. If they wanted to truly protect their land why wait until slavery was abolished to cecede!? Hmmm coincidence, I think not!!! Don't justify thier evil actions. They are probably paying for it in death I'm sure. FYI to all, I'm not speaking about modern Southerners who are amazing.       Most soldiers knew what they were really fighting for: A society predicated on the institution of slavery, whether they personally owned slaves or not. Even those who didn't feel so strongly were still traitors participating in the killing of more Americans than in any war before or after it in our entire history. They were traitors and the furthest thing from honorable Americans. Some folks have that simple fact so twisted that they take some kind of sick pride in flying that loser flag today.

      Even before the Revolution, many towns and cities had militias for defense against Indian raids. Those native warbands had a great deal in common with modern ISIS (as far as how they treated women, and others captured during their raids).

    Since you guys do so many U.S. military videos, you should do a review of Top Gun: Maverick. Tom Cruise calls it a love letter to aviation. It's not (he knows it, he just doesn't want to be controversial), it's a love letter to the U.S. military and its pilots (in this case the Navy).

    Good video but I just wanted to correct some biased information about the Civil war in the video. The war between the states was far more complicated than just saying it's about slavery. The war was also about agriculture and territory that was the South. The Confederate states was a real military and it had better generals than the North and was a comperable military to the North. General Lee was Virginian, borderline North and South territory. The North was industrialy superior to the South but the South controlled Agriculture. Slavery was a factor for sure but the North had a lot of southern sympethisers as well. I just wante to let you know that some of those videos are liberally biased. The Civil War was the bloodiest war in American history; it was a horrible war where families were on both sides killing each other. Horrific but the war itself is both interesting and complex.

      I find it interesting that some people today have far more disdain for the confederates than the people of the time.
      Back then we were brothers and cousins and such, now it's simply 'they were evil'.
      When people get on this rant about slavery was evil, and anyone who is remotely related to anyone ever involved in slavery should be damned to hell, I like to ask them what they are doing to stop slavery that still exists today. Usually followed by blank stares and back-peddling.

      The Civil War was about slavery. Do some research and you'll find writings from high ranking members of the Confederate government stating flat out the war was about slavery. And the quantity and quality if its armies is completely irrelevant to the point you are trying to make. And BTW, most of those great Southern generals, including Bobby Lee, had sworn an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States and instead committed treason by taking up arms against it. Traitors, all of them.

Slavery is the reason Southern states seceded - I've had this discussion before with revisionists such as yourself and punched holes in all your "facts" about tariffs and cotton markets, and I'm not getting into it again here. But I'll play your silly game and answer your question. I harbor no hate towards people who are long dead, though quite frankly they certainly deserve it. These are the people who enslaved millions, or willingly and anxiously fought to protect the slave property of the rich, and then after the war tacitly allowed the KKK to terrorize and murder black people and enact Jim Crow laws. This crap is still going on today with voter ID laws that are ostensibly meant to stop fraud that doesn't exist and gerrymandering (I know these are not limited to the South). Also, The Civil War was about states rights and yes Slavery was the biggest catalyst. But you have to know that only 30% of the peeple in the south were slave owners, most of the confederate soldiers were just common folk who didn't think about slavery and where there for the preservation of states rights (although Slavery was a horrific thing). Also, the Northern states had slavery in some form or other until about 1830. The south looked at succession much the same way the North felt during the American Revolution against Britain. Abraham Lincoln in my opinion, was the greatest president this country had ever had, for many reasons, but that doesn't change facts about the Civil War. And remember, whomever wins a war gets to write their own history so there's that to consider. I am just saying that oversimpliying the complexity of the war between the states is not doing any service to the history of our country. Keep in mind also that the South was agrarian and the North was industrialized so the South could not have progressed without salvery and the north would have been slow to progress without slavery in the south. Things just were how they were back then, as cruel and wrong as it was, it was necessary to the progression of our country. Also, slavery in Africa between tribes also existed, and Native American Indians enslaved other Indian tribes as well. All I am saying is that oversimplification that the Civil War was only about slavery, as inhuman as it was, is incorrect, it's more complex than that. And yes, slavery was absolutely at the forefront of most minds in those times but so were other issues. To be clear, no human being should be enslaved, ever!

    Study the British time period leading up to the American Revolution to understand what was going on with the British Empire _ And study the details ending this same war (the AR) plus the complete picture of what the British Empire was doing throughout the world prior to and during the American Revolution _ The B.E.'s involvement with Spain and France and Britain's concern of being conquered if they pursued the AR is part of the picture to end the AR _ Based on my studies i consider, and do not rule out, that the on-going taxation Britain placed on the colonies of American as part of ending this war demonstrates history very well might be covering up the outcome as a victory for the colonies of America in terms of labeling it as defeating the British Empire when Britain withdrew under the Treaty of Paris. . . :>/

      How was it misrepresented? Only error I heard was him saying that Confederates were never true Americans and that's only technically incorrect because of the 14th Amendment. I personally also find it a matter of opinion. Traitors fighting to keep people enslaved who in the process of their rotten rebellion killed more Americans than in any war in our entire history? Probably the furthest you can get from being an honorable and "true" American but hey that's just me. To hell with that "brother against brother" bullshit, the Confederacy was rotten to its core and deserves no praise in the modern age. If you fly that flag or fight to keep those statues up you're one of three things: a racist, an idiot, or both.

      Truth is BOTH the North & South wanted to maintain a system of anti-Black oppression, just the North wanted to remove slavery out of it, while South didn’t. The North wanted to maintain systematic white supremacy without slavery while the South wanted to continue slavery. The North only won because of the Black slaves who were allowed to fight in the war. The North was getting RAILED the South had already pushed them all the way up into Pennsylvania just 2 years into the war (Gettysburg, PA). The South had the superior military training & generals the North just had better weaponry & equipment. Abraham Lincoln knew the North would lose the war within months by 1863 if nothing was done so he & the other leaders realized their only chance was to allow Black people to fight in the war. FYI Abe Lincoln was just another anti-Black white supremacist in office he was just as racist as all the other presidents before him, unlike what the schools tell us. So he definitely didn’t like Black people nor cared for them. But he knew they were guaranteed to lose without them. So he cut them a deal & told them if they fight in the war & the North WINS, they would be free. This is what the Emancipation Proclamation was about, the president made a deal with Black people to free them IF the North wins. Negroes join the fight & would be responsible for the North defeating the South, thus freeing themselves from slavery after 250 years. Black people freed THEMSELVES from slavery it wasn’t Abraham Lincoln. That’s the real tale of the American Civil War. The racist North & the racist South duking it out over how they should go forward with systematic anti-Black oppression. And Black people came out victorious forcing boffum to compromise. Also as a side note, Memorial Day originates from former slaves honoring the fallen White soldiers who fought against slavery & for the liberation of Black people. They made it about American soldiers fighting & dying in hostile foreign countries but that’s not true. So White people across 🇺🇸 who celebrate Memorial Day every year they don’t even realize they’re celebrating Black people honoring fallen white soldiers…..the irony

    This video has alot of accurate information. Except for 1 major incorrect information. The South was not trying to keep Slavery and this War was not completely about Slavery.       Have you ever read the "Cornerstone Speech"? It's a speech made by the Vice President of the Confederacy laying out the rationale for secession. Give it a read. Or maybe the Ordinances of Secession from each of the Confederate states? Give those a quick skim too. I'll give some quick highlights:

      Still gonna tell me the Civil War or the Confederacy weren't about slavery? The Confederacy was rotten to its core from the very beginning and it is saddening that some fail to admit this simple fact to this day.
