Although steam operation on the sugar mill railways of Java was declining in 2004, a significant amount of activity could still be seen. Few locos ventured into the cane fields with most activity restricted to the mill yards. At this time China still had the largest number of steam locomotives is revenue earning service but with few classes and only two track gauges. By contrast Java still had an interesting selection of classes, manufacturers and gauges. A few rare and unusual types were also in service.
In 2014 steam is still used as motive power at some sugar mills. FarRail Tours will be visiting Java in August for one of the last chances to see real working steam in action. This is not a paid advert, just a recommendation. Go now, it will soon be too late.

Found it! My little brother will be so happy to find this! This was the first video he ever watched in his entire life!
I have yet to be disappointed. Always something of great interest to share, especially narrow gauge. Thank you for sharing.
this is a train in the area where I live in Sindang sea- Cirebon (NOT Sindang Lat) - West Java Province.
I know when the train is recorded. I see it in person, the time was 14 years of my life and I asked the two white men who were carrying a large camera with a tripod. He said that he was German.
Unfortunately, now the train is gone.
thanks for coming to java Indonesian I like your video.... 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I came here while searching how to use steam api in Java, interesting... :D
that engine house is so huge for such tiny engines!
Nice one, thank you! Been there in 2008!
Very interesting video. Amazing those old steamers near 100 yrs old and still working their selves go death. I loved the manual operated turntable. those men had to do a lot of very heavy work. Thanks for sharing this great video blackthorne57......Doug.....=)
Thanks for your comments. Java seems to have been ignored by many steam enthusiasts. This may be because there are only German, Dutch and Belgian locos none from Britain.
blackthorne57 Actually, from what I know, there are four locos from UK, and all of the are Hartmann. All of them belong to Sragi Sugar Mill, but only two out of four are still in operation.
mancunian4life86 Hartmann locos were built in Chemnitz, Germany not the UK. Please see my Flickr photo tinyurl.com/nhdczlk
Beautiful, Classic...

The sugar industry would have been an excellent market for geared logging locomotives.

Nice one, George. All gone now, I suppose.
Thanks, Steam locos and ancient stationary steam engines are still active in Java. One of the VERY few places in the world where real revenue earning steam can be seen. I will upload a stationary steam engine video in the future. Bernd Seiler is taking a tour to Java this August.
Not all of them. The one in Tersana Baru, Sindanglaut and Jatibarang have gone, yes, but there are still many steam locos that are still in operation, even though almost all of them are confined to yard work now. The one in Tersana Baru and Sindanglaut have converted into full tractors. The one in Jatibarang have gone to full diesels. There are also sugar mills in which you have to charter the steam locos in order for them to operate, like in Semboro and Asembagus Sugar Mill.
blackthorne57 So he's taking a tour in August then? A bit late during the milling season then isn't it? Normally he takes a tour during July.
