It was funny to me when Jon Stewart came along in the U.S. with biting and highly informed political satire, and they acted like it was a brand new thing, but for us, we'd been watching Air Farce and 22 Minutes do it for years, so it just felt familiar to us.
PenneySounds Jon Stewart is crap. He plays an out of context clip from a politician and then makes funny faces to indicate the way you're supposed to feel about it. And any time anybody questions whether he implied something not true, he responds that it's comedy and not meant to be taken seriously. The problem is that a generation did take his "commentary" seriously and they assumed that his jokes must have a basis even when they didn't. But what's worse is that he spawned dozens of imitators, all smirking at the camera and making jokes about people's appearance.

Royal Canadian Air Farce was an iconic program. Everything about it was top level, especially the performers. Thanks for reminding Canadians of the quality programming we had. 👏👏🥰
You forgot to mention that (as stated in every introduction to his spot) Jock McBeil's (McBile's) profession was "itinerant left-handed bagpipe technician" -- which, delivered utterly straight-faced and matter-of-factly, was itself worth a chuckle every time. I miss Air Farce -- was a fan since their radio days.
There's a massive Scottish community in Canada. Near where I went to high school, the annual Glengarry Highland Games in Maxwell, Ontario (which we locally just called the Maxwell Games) were HUGE. It was, and I'm sure still is, a major summer event every year, with attendance at ~20,000 people.
I never knew there was any other Games other than the Fergus Games! I’m from Barrie, it would have been a more scenic and less chaotic drive going up to your neck of the woods! Question I gotta ask though….did you guys have FULL Caber Toss?!
In the 2021 census, nearly as many Canadians claim Scottish heritage as the population of Scotland. The first 24 years Canada existed, our PMs were born in Scotland.
The reason it seems so well done is because the Air Farce were all very experienced comedians and satirists that had worked together since their radio program in the early 70's. So they had decades to become experts at political commentary and making fun of Canadian politics.
John Morgan was a national treasure. Any of his bits are fantastic, but my favourite sketch of his was called "The Remote Control Scotsman," and if you search it up, it comes up. I laughed so hard the first time I saw it, I nearly wet myself, and it still gets me cackling to this day. Everybody needs a remote control Scotsman in their pocket... sometimes when I really need to tell somebody off, I think I may turn into one... since my Gran and her family were Glaswegian.
Great reaction Mert! John Morgan (RIP) was a FANTASTIC comedian. Welsh born, his sense of timing, prowess on accents and interpretations was phenomenal. Honestly, each member of the Air Farce were exceptional comedians and actors! Morgan's dynamic with Fergusson, Abbott & Goy were off the charts. I always enjoyed John's 'Get Stuffed' rants! Glad to hear he did the Scots proud! Cheers from Canada, eh!!
I remember watching Air Farce though I wasn't old enough to appreciate the commentary. I was lucky enough to watch it filmed live once, it was very cool. My favourite segment was the Chicken Cannon
Thanks Mert, I hadn't seen this one yet, but I used to love John Morgan (RIP). I love watching RCAF, makes me laugh so hard, I love the parody of 'Sorry' by Justin Bieber that they did, it's hilarious and true.
RCAF was originally a radio show on Sunday afternoons for many years. The chinless man near the beginning was Joe Clark, a Tory PM for a short time between Trudeau senior being in power. I have Pierre Trudeau's autograph somewhere. When I was a young child, my parents went to dinner with him. I was curious about what this man that was always included in our dinner conversation looked like, so I mistakenly asked for his autograph. I was disappointed to be presented with a scrawl on a piece of paper the next morning instead of the expected photograph 😂
Now you need to check out Mike from Canmore. I lived in Canmore for about ten years, and there is a local guy who would always dress in a kilt and Tam O Shanter hat with a built-in red wig for Canada Day or any other reason to dress up. He was the real inspiration for the character, and was an amazing character in his own right.
I assume that would probably have been a "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" show skit, not Royal Canadian Air Farce. Both shows were excellent at political satire, no doubt!❤😂
@@carolmurphy7572 Actually it was on the election coverage in Nova Scotia, just a short skit of Mary trying to convince Kim to come out of the bathroom and letting Kim know she couldn't find Kevorkian in the phone book.
Joe Clark was largely unpopular and relatively obscure, leading to his swift removal from the position of Prime Minister by a non-confidence vote on his first budget in December 1979, We all joked and called him by the nickname "Joe Who?"🤣🤣
He lost because he tried to implement wage and price controls which Trudeau campaigned against. A few months after the election, Trudeau implemented the same policy he campaigned against. Don't shoot down Joe Who without understanding his rear end Liberal leader Pierre Elliot Trudeau.
P Trudeau's son, the current PM is much worse in capability, brain power and is most definitely responsible for the current much worse down ward spiral of Canada.
I used to watch Air Farce every week. I loved it so much because of how razor sharp the wit was. They would do characterizations of political figures at the time, and they were always spot on. They were so good that they would sometimes get the real politicians on the show for a skit.
I really miss this era when shows like Air Farce and This Hour has 22 Minutes, and the Red Green show made the CBC actually worth watching. Wasn't a huge Air Farce fan back in the day, but having developed a much greater appreciation for sketch and long-form improv in my adult years, I've come to really enjoy it.
my dad listened to royal canadian air farce on the radio every drive back from my grandmothers. then they did the tv show. so many memories. This Hour Has 22 Minutes and all the skits they did with Jean Chrétien was AMAZING. and he was prime minister at the time. He was great at taking the joke. And Stephen Harper was on it too... but he not once he became prime minister ... even having one of the actors arrested for showing up to a Q&A.
There was one time when he actually did participate in a skit after becoming PM. It was the one where Rick Mercer had a sleepover at 24 Sussex. Harper read him a "bedtime story" and the next morning he did his usual shake hands with his children when they went off to school, and then he hugged Rick. Of course that was all scripted. Harper was never a good sport when it came to the 22 Minutes people. The POS just couldn't wrap his mind around the fact that he was being given the opportunity for free publicity and all it would cost him was a couple of minutes of his time. The other party leaders were gracious enough to play along.
You cut off the “GET STUFFED” that comes at the end of Jock’s rants The Royal Canadian Air Farce was a popular show on CBC Radio for many years. In the 1990’s CBC did a major restructure including adding a 24/7 news channel and moving the Air Farce from radio to its television network along with a new comedy show called “This Hour Has 22 Minutes”. Both the Air Farce and 22 Minutes were played on the news network because both were satirical representations of the political news of the day. Many people liked watching these shows because by making fun of various situations they help in understanding the news of the day. The Canadian Radio Telecommunication Commission (CRTC) the government agency that regulates communications activities in Canada required the CBC to stop reprocessing the Air Farce and 22 Minutes on their CBC News network because they were not actually news shows. The CBC complied to the regret of many of their audiences. On the last show on the news network they featured the CRTC as a target for the infamous “Chicken Cannon” saying that CRTC stands for Can’t Recognize Truly Canadian. By the way you might check out the Chicken Cannon as well.
Scotland has a massive part in Canadian history. Our first Prime Minister was a Scotsman, after all. There's even a Canadian dialect of the Scottish Gaelic language. Where my father comes from, Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, there are places where the street signs are in Gaelic, and there's an educational institution called Colaisde na Gàidhlig, which teaches about the language and Highland culture. There is a massive Celtic music tradition in Canada which combines both Scottish and Irish heritage, as well as Breton Celtic traditions in French Canadian culture. Lots of Fiddle and Bagpipe music, and stepdancing and Highland dance, with a unique Canadian flair.
When John passed, and the scale of the show was cut back to just specials I got a chance to go to their offices when they were clearing out some costumes and wigs (which I picked up for our school). Got a chance to talk to all of them in one of the board rooms one on one. Some of the nicest people I've met in the industry. Though, chatting on the subway with Rick Mercer a few times was WAY more fun!
So glad you decided to watch this one. Brings back a lot of memories. Air Farce was always excellent at Canadian political humour and offered a little of something for everyone. Honestly I think only Rick Mercer has ever been able to match them in in this respect. Mike fro. Kenmore is also a great series of sketches he did. Although it's not John Morgan you should checkout the sketch a politically correct moment done by Air Farce (and maybe the Chicken Cannon sketches) as well as they are well worth a watch.
I concur with a bunch of other commenters, John Morgan does another character from Air Farce called ‘Mike from Canmore’. Also take a look for the ‘Chicken Cannon’ segments, on New Year’s Eve Air Farce tv shows.
John Morgan was a gift to Canada. He and the rest of the Air Farce were some of the best in Canadian comedy, and that says something from the country that produced names like John Candy, Martin Short, Rick Moranis, and Dan Aykroyd to name a few. Enjoy! Air Farce was pure gold!
Love this! I was actually Alive (I’m 76)! Like most (free) countries, our politics are pretty confusing! The first political campaign that I worked on I wasn’t even able to vote. I used to watch Royal Canadian Air Farce AND This Hour Has 22 Minutes EVERY WEEK from the early 90s when they all began (on TV as regular shows) through the early 2000s. (I STILL see some of "22 Minutes", but it's cast isn't as good as when Rick Mercer was on it so their material is "hit" & (sometimes also) "miss" NOW. These 2 shows were SOMETIMES how I got my news, as they always gave real news & then made comedy on it. The way they did it, it was ALWAYS clear what was real & what was their comedy "extra" on it, so you could be truly informed & entertained at the same time. LOVED both shows! You should watch more (or even FULL episodes of both of these shows - esp. from the earlier years - [90s].) You will learn more about Canadian politics & events of the time AND get very entertained with good comedy at the same time.
The second guy was Joe Clarke a Progressive Conservative who was voted out with a vote of non confidence in 10 months😂🤣. By the way, we had a female Prime Minister for 6 months in 1993, another Progressive Conservative .
Only the 22 minutes cast that was contemporary with Air Farce was even comparable to Air Farce. While the later iterations of 22 minutes were/are ok, it lost a lot when Mercer left, and could never be compared to prime Air Farce.
Having lived through that period of Canadian Politics, Air Farce was pretty much always spot on. We may not have liked it being true, but at least we could laugh at it together.
Ooh, ooh, please do the Gun Registry sketch! My family still quotes that one at each other, even twenty years later! Someone else mentioned his Mike from Canmore character, and I second that -- we quote that character regularly too. And the Hooters sketch was also particularly memorable, partly because none of them could keep a straight face. 😂 Ah, I miss John Morgan, and his fellow Air Farce member Roger Abbott. We lost them too soon, they were treasures.
The Royal Canadian Air Farce was golden. Look up The Rick Mercer Report and This Hour Has 22 Minutes, especially the old stuff. Btw, my dad was born in Aberdeen while his mum was on a shopping trip, but raised in the Highlands.
John Morgan is Welsh and he always did a great Scottish accent. He had a BBC Radio series called "It's All in the Mind of John Morgan" that pre-dates his work on the Air Farce. Jock McBile needs to rise from the grave and add a few more to his list of debt incurring Prime Ministers, like all of them since this was done.
I just found your videos today. I’m A Canadian who lives in Ireland. The question that is BURNING within me is….”So when are you moving to Canada?” I’m only messing, why would you leave Malaysia for the, well… anyway! It warms my heart that you have such an affinity for the Great White North.
That was Joe Clark Prime Minister for a little over eight months. Otherwise known as “Joe who?” on the Royal Canadian Air Farce when it was on radio. I think it had better, edgier content on radio, it softened when they moved to television.
@@slake9727 we maritimers consider all four provinces home. The show originated in St Johns. When it moved to Halifax it included others not from the rock
17 Billion, I miss those days. Current debt is around 2.5 TRILLION dollars, based on the last report (2.1 in 2022/2023 and we've run more deficits since.
Ici Farce Canada, the French name for the programme, actually was a little in joke because farce is French for stuffing, as in Get Stuffed, Jock McBile’s well known catchphrase.
The last line about Canadian money was, of course, a joke. But at the end of the decade that actually made a difference in being able to dramatically reduce Canada's national debt. The Japanese Yen went to Hell, the US dollar surged with new investment, and the now much lower Canadian dollar meant the debt was easier to pay-off when calculated relative to US dollar value. Miulroney's hated GST and Paul Martin's spending cuts combined to turn things around.
Fun-Fact: there are actually more people of Scottish ancestry in Canada than in Scotland! But to be fair, the USA has as many people of Scottish ancestry as Scotland and Canada COMBINED.
The guy who says his debt will be a stimulating debt is Joe Clark, leader of the opposition Progressive Conservative Party. He defeated Trudeau in 1979, then lost to him six months later. Trudeau came back from 1980 to 1984, when he resigned.
The RCAF radio show was even better - TV limited some of the gags they could do, but radio allowed for absolutely surreal and ridiculous situations. Try to find it online if you can.
You asked who the guy was who was saying "it's going to be a different kind of deficit, a stimulative deficit", he was Conservative party leader Joe Clark, who was PM of Canada for all of 6 months before Liberal party leader Pierre Trudeau came right back in again.
That skit was done far too early, Trudeau the younger has manages to double the debt by borrowing more money than all precious PM's before him. If they did it now Jock McBile's performance would end with him having an aneurysm! 😉
The Canadian economy collapsed in 76-77. Recall folks who walked away from a nice duplex because they could not afford a morgage that quickly went up to about 12%. Same is likely worth ca $300,000 o day in Brampton.
1:25 "What is [Canada's national debt] now? "By the end of the 2024-25 fiscal year, Canada's total market debt is expected to surpass $1.4 trillion." Mind you, there's a huge difference of inflation between 1968 and 2024. The $17B approximately equals $154B today. So yes, even with inflation factored in, it's still grown about 90x in the five and a half decades since. We are spending more than we make. :(
Canada being a new country, we had to spend money to build roads, communications, military, infrastructure etc.. It takes money to do so. 10th biggest GDP in the world. No one wants to go back to horses and carts. Cut out the world is our market and food costs will drop. Cut out Walmart, Amazon and go back to mom and pop shops. We may not get everything we used tobut the middle class will be back.
What a load of ccccccrrrrrraaaaaaaaapppppppp!!!!!!! The deficit was not caused by spending on roads, communications, military, or infrastructure. Until Trudeau 2.0 started his record spending spree and never balanced a budget the largest part of the deficits was caused by the cost of servicing the original debt accumulated by Trudeau 1.0.
Canada's first deficit came from a man called diefenbaker not a liberal. And yes like the rest of the world deficits have grown . I know cons of all stripes like to pretend no one else suffered during these times but anyone with a micro intelligence and capable of observation beyond his little political world could easily educate you. Having a grasp of the world around you might just give you a clue !
when trudeau the younger took office in 2016 the national debt was $634.4BN. that's all debt of every government canada has ever had combined. since then he has added another $700+BN.
yup and the entire world's debt exploded due to a pandemic funny how certian clowns think only this country was affected and of course that would be Trudeau's fault according to pp
Justin's ignorance how finances "balance themselves" indicates his utter unsuitability to manage a nation. Canada is now paying a very heavy price for this narcissists childish steerage of the nation.

You should watch more (or even FULL episodes of both of these shows - esp. from the earlier years - [90s].) You will learn more about Canadian politics & events of the time AND get very entertained with good comedy at the same time.
As a Canadian (some bit part Scots) I'm so glad you got a chuckle out of the skits lol
The second guy was Joe Clarke a Progressive Conservative who was voted out with a vote of non confidence in 10 months😂🤣. By the way, we had a female Prime Minister for 6 months in 1993, another Progressive Conservative .
Joe who?
@@JasonKucherawy exactly😂😂🤣😂
This Hour Has 22 Minutes is a similar kind of show that's still running :)
I’d love to see him do a segment on Marg, Princess Warrior! (Mary Walsh)
The original cast was best.
Ah, I miss John Morgan, and his fellow Air Farce member Roger Abbott.
Great stuff!!!❤❤❤
John Morgan is Welsh and he always did a great Scottish accent. He had a BBC Radio series called "It's All in the Mind of John Morgan" that pre-dates his work on the Air Farce. Jock McBile needs to rise from the grave and add a few more to his list of debt incurring Prime Ministers, like all of them since this was done.
I'm Mike....from Canmore!!🤣😂
I just found your videos today. I’m A Canadian who lives in Ireland. The question that is BURNING within me is….”So when are you moving to Canada?” I’m only messing, why would you leave Malaysia for the, well… anyway! It warms my heart that you have such an affinity for the Great White North.
That was Joe Clark Prime Minister for a little over eight months. Otherwise known as “Joe who?” on the Royal Canadian Air Farce when it was on radio.
I think it had better, edgier content on radio, it softened when they moved to television.
Have you seen. This hour has 22 minutes. From my home Nova Scotia. I think you ran Talking to Americans with Rick?
The show with all the Newfoundlanders on it?
The one with all the Newfoundlanders on it?
@@slake9727 we maritimers consider all four provinces home. The show originated in St Johns. When it moved to Halifax it included others not from the rock
It’s funny hearing Mulroney’s comments about “unpayable mortgages” from the 1980s.
Remember how low the mortgages were back then??
Jock MacBile was a classic character.
17 Billion, I miss those days. Current debt is around 2.5 TRILLION dollars, based on the last report (2.1 in 2022/2023 and we've run more deficits since.
We're Tiny, We're Tooney, we're all a Little Looney; Since Brian Mulroony invented GST!
Please do the Royal Canadian Air Farce Chicken Cannon
Ici Farce Canada! (And I actually went to see a taping of the original radio show, long before they were ever on television.
You haven't checked out Baroness Von Sketch
The guy playing Jock McBile was Welsh
Somewhere out there is a bit that Mike Myers does where he speaks French with a Scottish accent. If you can find it, I guarantee you laugh.
Royal Canadian Air Farce > Royal Canadian Air Force
(admittedly a low bar)
current debt as of 2024-10-21 is $1,237,680,915,000
About $30,000 per citizen
Don't forget that Canada has a ton of Scottish folks.
The guy who says his debt will be a stimulating debt is Joe Clark, leader of the opposition Progressive Conservative Party. He defeated Trudeau in 1979, then lost to him six months later. Trudeau came back from 1980 to 1984, when he resigned.
I have heard of wide screen, but that was WIDE ASS screen.
That guy was Joe Clark. He was Prime Minister for a very short time, and then Pierre Trudeau was voted back in. As was aaid in the skit.
That guy was Joe Clark.
Unfortunately Morgan passed away quite a while ago. He was a brilliant comedian
This is like Stephen Colbert, but we’re ahead of time
This aged so well.
You need to watch the same show and actor playing "Mike from Canmore".
Joe Clark was the other politician
That's why we had a thi g called speakers corner.... when it got too truthful they took that down
ici farce canada😂🎉❤
That skit was done far too early, Trudeau the younger has manages to double the debt by borrowing more money than all precious PM's before him.
If they did it now Jock McBile's performance would end with him having an aneurysm! 😉
The Canadian economy collapsed in 76-77.
Recall folks who walked away from a nice duplex because they could not afford a morgage that quickly went up to about 12%.
Same is likely worth ca $300,000 o day in Brampton.
JUST LIKE THE REST OF THE PLANET BUT WHOSE COUNTING
1:25 "What is [Canada's national debt] now?
"By the end of the 2024-25 fiscal year, Canada's total market debt is expected to surpass $1.4 trillion."
Mind you, there's a huge difference of inflation between 1968 and 2024.
The middle class were the ones not shopping mom and pop stores.
Canada is pretty much the only western nation to still have a middle class. Not as well off as we were but still observable.
"Why Uber won't work in Newfoundland""
Aberdeen lol. The n did a Houdini in my comment
You get what you vote for.... Vote Independent!
i forgot about that character
are we sure this is from the past and not the future...
And now... The son of the man who gave us the deficit, has raised it to over *TWO TRILLION DOLLARS!*
Canadian politics... Ya can't beat it!
Canada's first deficit came from a man called diefenbaker not a liberal. And yes like the rest of the world deficits have grown . I know cons of all stripes like to pretend no one else suffered during these times but anyone with a micro intelligence and capable of observation beyond his little political world could easily educate you. Having a grasp of the world around you might just give you a clue !
the other guy was Ed broadbent. Tredeau spent wacks of cash on strippers and vacations
jocks not scottish hes nova scotian
$1232 billion (1.2 trillion) on September 17, 2024.
when trudeau the younger took office in 2016 the national debt was $634.4BN. that's all debt of every government canada has ever had combined. since then he has added another $700+BN.
yup and the entire world's debt exploded due to a pandemic funny how certian clowns think only this country was affected and of course that would be Trudeau's fault according to pp
Justin's ignorance how finances "balance themselves" indicates his utter unsuitability to manage a nation. Canada is now paying a very heavy price for this narcissists childish steerage of the nation.
Our national debt is more than $1.2 trillion. More than half that has been added to us by the second Trudeau.
react to kevin spencer
Back when the show was actually funny.
Please stop showing the videos with this distorted extra wide projection. Everyone looks short and fat.
