  • The legendary Mona Best was one of the most important persons in the Beatles' career and in the development of the Liverpool music & club scene in the early Sixties.
The Beatles often played at Mona's popular teen club, the Casbah Coffee Club, and her son Pete joined the group in August, 1960 just as they were about to leave for Hamburg, Germany.
In this short clip, Mona and Pete discuss the dismissal of Pete from the band in 1962.

Picture this: Pete Best watching footage of the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. Seeing those lads he had - so recently, it must have seemed - shared dingy Hamburg digs with, up on the big stage. And then picture him reading reports of how '73M people watched the Beatles on Ed Sullivan'. Reading that 'so many people watched it that crime rates plummeted during their performance'. I'd hazard to say that no-one in human history has felt quite the same bizarre set of emotions that Pete Best must have felt at such moments.

Pete Best did get the boot but Ringo clicked with the others, that was obvious plus his drumming was not as "clunky" as Pete's. However, since 1988, Pete made his mark with fans, not to mention a few million pounds as well, so while his story initially was sad, it did have a happy ending.

@@Cosmo-Kramer -I believe I recall seeing a recent interview with Pete Best where he said just before the anthology was due to be released in ‘95 Paul personally called Pete on the phone and said, on the lines of ‘I think it’s about time some wrongs should be righted: there’s some money due to you here. Take it or leave it.’ To which Pete, quite sensibly said ‘thank you very much, where do I sign?’ I’m obviously paraphrasing here and I don’t believe the conversation evolved any further than that, but it was certainly a gesture towards an olive branch and meant that Pete did finally make something out of his part in The Beatles’ story financially, and while he was still relatively young enough to enjoy it: I think it was round then he gave up work and went on the road with his band.
What amazes me is what an invidious position Neil Aspinall must have been in fathering a child with Mona, just prior to Pete getting sacked. He was obviously a great friend to The Beatles and also a good man to ensure he kept in touch with Mona and Roag and that Roag was included in his will.

    • @Cosmo-Kramer
      @Cosmo-Kramer 3 роки тому +1

@@dominicberesford5459 Dominic, that's just not true. Pete never had that conversation with Paul. Just watch any interview of Pete since then, as he's invariably asked the question, "Have you had any contact with your former Beatles bandmates?", and Pete answers the question the same way every time: "None." If you can provide me with a link where Pete said that, then I'm all ears. But I'm not holding my breath, because Pete's been adamant and consistent with his answer to the question ever since the time of the Anthology. Of course, he gave the same exact answer before the Anthology, too, as he hasn't spoken to the other 3 since his last gig with them in August of '62.
As for Neil, yes, that must've been very awkward for him.

a lot has been said about the Beatles putting down Pete's drumming but almost every time they recorded something with an actual producer, the producers almost always had an issue with his drumming! At a point, John, Paul and George would just stomp on the stage to help Pete keep the timing right and while John said they taught Pete to keep a standard beat, he couldn't handle anything other than that. That said, most of what I've heard and read points out that Pete just didn't click with the three personally, something that everyone around them, including early fans noticed.

I’ve met Pete Best and also seen him play live. Firstly, and most importantly, he was a very nice man. Quiet and shy, but friendly. And I am truly sorry for what happened to him, as it couldn’t have been easy to live through.
That all said...he was a very mediocre drummer. Please understand that I don’t say that to be mean AT ALL. But as someone who plays the drums for a living, I know the difference. When I saw him, he had to have another drummer play along with him to fill out the sound and back him up (I think it was his son?). Ringo was just the better choice. And as far as compensation goes, it’s rumoured he had made a couple million quid from his contributions to the Anthology series, so it all worked out in the end.

    • @kellykempkilroy

George couldn't play a decent Guitar solo to save his life!
Have you watched him in "live" performances? Absolutely atrocious! George is a very lucky man!
George Martin could have insisted that Paul McCartney replace George on Lead Guitar and relegate George to playing Bass.
Paul McCartney should have been The Beatles Lead Guitarist!
There are quite a few songs that feature Paul or John playing the Guitar solos.

Tony Sheridan and the Beatles -including Pete Best- made a record and had a minor hit with 'My Bonnie'. This was at the request of Bert Kamfert who wanted to record them. I owned that album; and for its time - it's not bad. This same record is what got the attention of Brian Epstein, who was curious enough to check The Beatles out in Liddypool after a few requests from custumers for the record 'My Bonnie' came in to his record shop.
    The rest is history...

There were major limitations in Pete's drumming that would have held The Beatles back. Even has he not been sacked George Martin would never have let him play in any of the records.
Secondly, his personality was severely lacking compared to the other guys. He was sullen, never hung out with them and refused to adopt the Beatle hairstyle. He just wasn't one of them!

@Ottoboy111 ... Martin employed a group of arrangers, their job was to take apart what had been written and restructure it. They did far more in those days than they do today, I know I was in a band in 1964 and we recorded at the early Decca Studio in Denmark Street. One distinct memory was being told to finish on an 'A 6th' chord instead of 'A'; it made our up-beat song sound like a dance band number grrrr.... Remember a lot of what you read is written for you to believe... lol.

And there's another thing:Pete's drumming was, let's say, too solid. He wasn't open to change or experiment. He'd been playing exactly the same way for two years. Ringo was already a bit of a household name and could not only play better but was (as proven by history) much more experimental. I feel for Pete... but in the end, we got Beatles.

Ringo's use of the ride cymbal and open hi-hat made a HUGE difference in the Beatle's sound, just check it out, and compare to Pete Best's rather choppy sounding hi-hat work. This loosened up the band's sound very much. Pete did get a raw deal, that's why the Boys let their manager sack him. I'm glad he finally got some real money from Anthology, he desereved it!

Pete had some great records on his own with The Pete Best Group. All very "garagey" and a bit crude but definitely thought highly enough of to be covered by bands like The Lyres, etc.
Though Ringo was absolutely the right choice for the drum slot, it was still shoddy of The Beatles to never acknowledge what a catalyst Pete was to their own success. Though I think Macca has come around a bit in the last few years (by contributing to the Casbah book, etc.)

Yes, they may have recorded songs in a couple of hours, just like we did, but post editing was available albeit it only 4 track, (4 was often bounced to give 8). There was much post editing to the beatles work. Believe me, it can be heard on many tracks. I was there in that environment in the 1960/70's.

Depends on how you define "nice," I guess. The competition on top is so fierce and nasty that even if you do make it, you'll never stay up there for long unless you play along like everyone else. Which is why I say some are in denial. They think they're nice as can be, and their image is perfect, but there are always nasty dealings of one kind or another in their past and going on behind the scenes.

His girlfriend would attack Tommy and the Beatles when they got home late. He left the band because of her. For a few weeks they had a drummer between Moore and Best, Norman Chapman, who was off the uni and turned down the permanent position.

The Wikipedia article on Pete Best is a must-read.
Does anyone really think the Beatles would have been The Beatles if Best had stayed with the band? The chemistry wasn't right. Pete was too subdued and conservative for the band. And John and Paul wouldn't have looked so charismatic with a handsome curly haired drummer behind them.
John Lennon finally said the way they fired him was cowardly.
I'm glad Pete finally made millions of dollars with The Beatles Anthology. And outlived 2.
