    Thanks for keeping the music to a minimum. I appreciate hearing the ambient sounds, your footsteps, breathing, etc. I also appreciate your enthusiasm. Good work!

    I really liked the Relive at the end to give me a better view of the route you took up the scree field exiting Deer Lakes to reconnect with the Duck Pass Trail. That's the hike I've been wanting to do for a long time but that's the section of (non) trail I'm concerned about. However, once connected back to the Duck Pass Trail I want to cut over to Pika Lake to spend the night, then return to Coldwater Campground. Thanks for another great video.

    Thanks for the video. It gave us the courage to hike over the crest closer to the rock climb to duck lake pass-we are in our late 70’s and used to take the “too well traveled” crystal lake path on this hike. This hike ranked with the Kaibab trail in the Grand Canyon in my opinion.

    That little trail summary / Relive part at the end is awesome and so helpful for perspective. You are a hiking beast and seeing the entire trail and terrain you just climbed - with a smile on your face no less! - proves it. Thank you for sharing!

    I've done this hike a couple of times. It is very doable in one day without camping anywhere along the way. My GPS tracklog of the hikes shows about 13.4 miles total. There is a way to get back to Lake George without walking on roads and dodging cars. Just past Skelton Lake, heading northwest, is the turnoff to the Emerald Lake trail. The section between the Duck Pass trail and Emerald Lake is very pretty, but also quite steep. Past Emerald Lake is a turnoff to Barrett and T'J. Lakes. This trail takes you all of the way to Lake George.

    • @rkatrails
      @rkatrails 4 роки тому

      The times you've done this hike did you do it counter clockwise also? And did you pretty much take the same route up the scree field out of Deer Lakes? I've hesitated to do this hike because I'm uncertain about this part of the trail and I'll be by myself. I also want to circle around to Pika Lake to spend the night, then return to Coldwater Campground.

    • @slegal62
      @slegal62 4 роки тому +1

      @@rkatrails Yes, counterclockwise both times. I like doing my uphills hike on less crowded trails and once you pass the turn off to Crystal Lake, the trail get pretty uncrowded. Also, once you start climbing out of the flat tundra area of the Mammoth crest, you're going were few people go. I love taking a break at Deer Lakes, because I feel like I have the place to myself. When you get up to the scree area, just continue along on the bottom and drop down along the edge toward the tarn. You'll to the left a rough trail, which is what Sheety33 followed. It's steep but easy to follow and not that long an uphill. Then the trail becomes much easier to follow. Note that there are a lot of different ways to go back down to the Duck Pass trail. So if you see terrain that looks different than what Sheety33 saw, you're fine. You will get to the Duck Pass trail eventually. Where Sheety33 hit the Duck Pass Trail, you would have to turn right to get to the trail down to Pike Lake. Otherwise, you would go left until the junction. It's fairly obvious when you get to the trail junction, where to go to get to Pika Lake.

    Love all of your Yosemite and Inyo hikes! So beautiful. My son and I are planning do the JMT from Mammoth area to Mt. Whitney. Where do you usually park your car when you do your hikes out of that area? Is there a good resource or recommendation to leave my car there for two weeks in the Mammoth or closer to the trailheads?

      You could cut down to Crystal Lake. Next water source from memory was Deer Lakes.
