      So many to choose but while not Science Fiction I would love to see an adaptation of _The Girl who Drank the Moon_ (animated or live-action), _The Thief Lord_ (although we did had a film based on it 15-16 years ago), _Cam Jansen_ along with _The Twits_ by Roald Dahl

      My greatest wish is that Denis Villenueve, preferably, would do a remake/new film version of Kurt Vonnegut's book, "Slaughterhouse-Five", an amazing WWII/time-travel sci-fi/historic masterpiece, and the film from the '70's didn't fully do it justice. In addition to the sci-fi elements that could be vastly improved upon, the ability to realistically recreate the U.S. firebombing and destruction of the German city of Dresden, which was almost akin to dropping the atomic bombs, could end up being a scene that would be talked about for years (especially given that a lot of people don't really even know about it). There are certainly a few other directors I think could pull it off, but my top choice would be Denis, for sure.

      Yeah and while there's a lot of similarity to Game Of Thrones on the surface (stubborn good house vs villainous house vs royal house), the reactors touched on even more in that they're both like a history, in both cases like a history that's trying to give you the "real story" behind something that's passed into legend. Sometimes I wish in both cases someone would come out with the legend version of both (with evil imp Tyrion or wise prophet Paul).

    When my cousin gave me the book Dune to read in 1970, he said the following SPOILERS to put into context or perspective: the Imperial Sardaukar troops were the most feared soldiers in the empire. They have never lost a battle or even lost a man… until they met the Fremen. This was ‘earth-shattering’ to their psyche. Duncan Idaho (Jason Momoa) lived with the Fremen and killed dozens of Sardaukar before he was killed.
    The same with the Fremen. They were THE best fighters, even better than the Sardaukar. Jamis was one their best warriors. It came as a severe shock to the Fremen to see him bested several times by the boy Paul!
    To take a life, to kill, a part of you dies. That was Paul’s vision. He tried coming up with different scenarios and was killed by Jamis each time. There was no other choice. He did not want to, but he had to kill Jamis. In a way, Paul’s ‘innocence’ died when he killed Jamis.

    • @ryanhampson673
      @ryanhampson673 8 місяців тому +14

      Duncan Idaho was a Ginaz swordmaster so he outclassed any Sadukar soldier 1v1. But the Sadukar soldiers are equivalent to mid to higher scaled swordsman so compared to the vast majority of troops they are among the highest.

      Where did you read that they've never lost a man prior to meeting the Fremen? It is not true. Never seen that and it doesn't make sense in the universe. These people aren't that unrealistic.
      Jamis was skilled, but I remember no mention of him being among the best. The best become leaders, like Stilgar. He's not meant to be an example of the best these people have to offer, I think he's the opposite. He's about average for a solid Fremen, showing that while Paul is capable of taking care of him, even an average Fremen is still a challenge.

    The last vision was metaphorical. Paul, who was innocent and had never taken another person's life, had to "Die", to leave the old life behind and embrace the new. By forcing Paul to kill, Jamis "killed" Paul's innocence and who he was and paved the way for who Paul is to become. The Dune series is heavy with politics, religion, and the like. It's a dense series with many factions.

      @@travisgray8376Stories which stick too tightly to well-worn tropes are predictable and boring and tired, although they can also be cheap entertainment and fun.
      But stories that move too far away from the storytelling language that people are familiar with are stories that require a lot of work to follow and understand, possibly too much work. Put in the work, and you maybe get a big payoff, but if you are looking for lighter entertainment, the high-work stories are too much work for you, at that time. Or if you just aren't used to being challenged with storytelling that doesn't follow the very predictable paths.
      This movie, on its own and forced to be standalone without previous versions of the movie, or the book, fails to explain so much that it is incomprehensible. For example, we who have read the books, know what the Bene Gesserit believe is coming and what they are trying to achieve. But this movie actually explains less than 1% of that, so what is the audience to make of the Bene Gesserit? Or the Mentats? Or even something as astonishingly simple as why the Duke did not marry Lady Jessica?
      I've read the books. I think this is an amazing adaptation of the book. But as a standalone movie, I really don't think I would recommend it to anyone.

    • @TetsuoVI
      @TetsuoVI 8 місяців тому +14

      @Jabberwocky415 I get your point but not in this case. The way these scenes are shot, almost all of Paul's visions are metaphorical. We can even go down the list of the major ones. Jamis did help Paul learn the ways of the desert. The amtal is his test, pass and join the Fremen, or fail and they drink your water, so to speak. Paul's multiple vision deaths is his transformation from an innocent into a man/on the path to becoming the One. By luring Paul in his visions Chani is the gateway by which he dies to become reborn into his new self. And the voice saying when he takes a life he kills his innocence. This is all very well worn territory of "the hero's journey" in mythology, Denis alludes to this as the framework used to tell this story. It's also one of the reasons why this version of Dune is so spot on, showing vs. only telling (like so many other movies do, ahem 1984) provides such a richer experience with which to convey the contexts and details of a story.

  • @malloid
    @malloid 8 місяців тому +98

    One thing that's important to note about Dune is that it's all about human evolution. All the characters; all the different factions - they're all human. There are no aliens in the story. Even the Guild Navigators are humans that have taken spice for a long enough time that they've evolved into unrecognisable forms.

Right now there are humans who can calculate massively complex numbers in their brain like a Mentat. There are people so gifted at reading humans they can do amazing things using the power of suggestion like when the Bene Genesrit use The Voice and there are tribes of people who have evolved to not just survive but thrive in the harshest conditions on the planet like the Fremen. Who’s to say in a thousand plus years, humans won’t have evolved to nurture these talents to the nth degree?

    One of the best films to experience in IMAX, up there with Interstellar, Blade Runner 2049, Mad Max: Fury Road, etc. I'm sad the second part got delayed; it was one of my most anticipated movies of the year, but judging by the trailers, it looks even better, so I hope it's worth the wait. This is a great movie with great acting scenes, amazing cinematography, a great score, great storytelling, great writing, etc.
    Edit: And I am sorry; I don't want to be rude, but yall talked so much in this reaction in so many important dialogues, and I don't know why the storytelling went over y'all's heads, and that's why you guys were lost. If you don't pay attention to this movie, you won't understand what is happening because everything that needs to be explained is explained perfectly. I never read the books, I didn't watch the first movies, and I understood this film perfectly. Everything y'all asked "What planet is this? "They haven't shown spice, right?", "How did he live?" “What are the odds?” etc., was shown or explained, and y'all didn't understand anything. 1. After the title screen, they showed you that Caladan is the planet of House Atreidis. 2. They literally show spice in the beginning with Zendaya's speech, "You can see spice in the air," and they show it later too. 3. How did the baron live? They literally show you that he activated his shield, and he has his antigravity device, which he used to escape the air. 4. "What are the odds? Jesus…Duncan found them so easily in the desert because Dr. Yue stashed a tracker in the pack he prepared for Paul. Duncan just followed the tracker. Rewatch the movie and pay attention, because you all missed so much.
    And I disagree completely that nothing happened in this movie. Like I said, y'all missed so much.
    I thought the ending was perfect. Even though it's just half the story, I think Denis and the writing team still did a very good job at making the movie feel whole. You can even break down the film to see that it still follows a general 3-part narrative structure:
    Setup: The Baron Harkonnen and the Emperor (off-screen) conspire to destroy the Atreides. The Atreides arrive on Arrakis and take control. Suspecting a trap, Duke Leto proposes an alliance with the Fremen. Paul learns about surviving in Arrakis (both the political environment and the physical environment) and is established as the potential Kwisatz Haderach or Lisan Al Gaib and future leader of his House.
    Conflict: the Atreides are ambushed by the combined forces of the Harkonnens and the Emperor's Imperial army. Paul and Jessica flee into the desert, where their survival skills are now put to the test. Along the way, Paul struggles with himself when he learns a massive thing about himself: his role in the oncoming jihad he foresaw during the vision in the tent, giving a completely new facet to that Kwisatz Haderach possibility.
    Resolution (not to the whole story but to what was set up in the beginning of the film at least): Paul and Jessica find the Fremen. Paul succeeds in proving his worth to them as a fighter, leader, survivor/Lisan Al Gaib, and by joining them, he fulfills his late father's vision of making this alliance with the Fremen. Paul even said this out loud to them. Even his last line in the movie, literally "desert power," was a direct callback to what his father told him earlier.
    So not only did the movie end with the perfect setup for Paul's revenge in Part 2, with the shot of the worm rider and Paul and his new allies walking forward into the horizon, but it also brought back a lot of things that were laid out at the beginning of the film. It's a great movie (8.5/10), and a lot happened in the film.

That's why I don't follow many reacting channels because there are so many that either the reactors are too dumb and everything in the storytelling goes over their heads, or they talk over every dialogue, or they talk looking at the camera and missing what they are watching or eating, or watch a lot of mediocre content, etc. I am very picky with reacting channels.

    • @stuffyouotterlistento1461
      @stuffyouotterlistento1461 8 місяців тому +2

      They'd be pretty boring reactors if they didn't chat about stuff, and since they don't already know the movie, they don't know when it's okay to talk, and when they're going to be missing stuff. And a movie like Dune, which is very dense with information, is bound to be particularly challenging in this regard. Reacting to a movie necessarily makes it a more casual watch, which makes it a lot more likely things are going to be missed. And even with a more focused viewing, if you went into this blind and still followed all the nuances and names, you're probably doing significantly better than I would in your shoes (of course, I'm admittedly pretty awful with names). To clarify on your comment, the sandworm is known to the Fremen as "the old man in the desert". They see the worms as the physical embodiment of their deity, and they have several names for that deity, some in the form of "old man" or "old grandfather". So Paul's prescience is seeing ahead to a time when he too will know the sandworm as Shai-Hulud. The task you gave yourself was to put out entertaining reaction videos. At some level, that's always on your mind. Long silences can feel like you aren't "working" for the audience. As a result, you're watching movies at a surface level. There's NOTHING wrong with that. In fact I encourage that with most summer blockbusters so you don't just get annoyed at stupid they are. MOST modern movies cater to that, they ask nothing of the viewer beyond "pay the ticket and sit still while we spoon feed you the story." Villineuve doesn't dumb down his art for a TikTok audience (not that you necessarily are that), he doesn't pound information into your head while screaming THIS WILL BE IMPORTANT. You have to actively watch his films. MOST of the questions you had during watching this are answered in the film.
    Visions of the future are simply glimpses of possibilities. They are not set in stone. Every decision made changes the future. In this portion of the story, Paul can sense when parts of his visions are certain, and when they are more fluid. The movie plays visions, and memories of previously had visions, with a more saturated color palette than "real life." Otherwise, Villineuve doesn't say "This is a vision" or "This is real." I hope you do re-watch it. This film is so rewarding upon re-watch. I've read the book probably 20 times and it's the same way. Good luck with your channel!

    A dozen scenes establish the harkonnen/emperor alliance to attack the atreides. "Whose ships are these?!" The diamond symbol is from Dr Yueh, showing where he helped them. Including placing a beacon in their supplies so Duncan could find them, so the odds of that were 100%. It's ok not to like this or for it to not have lived up to the hype you experienced before watching. The book is exactly the same way. This story doesn't hold your hand the way most fiction does, it throws out names and terminology and references and does not explain them. You have to figure them out over time based on context clues and other scenes.

This is one of those films that was made for, and deserves to be seen on, the biggest screen possible and reactions be damned. Hoping they rerelease part 1 in IMAX (I hear that's the plan, especially with the release being pushed) so I can see both films on that giant screen and with Hans Zimmer's score blasting out of a killer sound system. First, visions are not concrete. They can change depending on outside influence. It’s just one version of what might be.
    Second, this is why the novel has been broken into two parts. The first movie in the 80s tried to cram the entire novel into one movie. And as you guys found out, this is a very complex story. Trying to condense this book into one movie, in two or three hours, is impossible. You can’t do it justice. This is why they split the movie into two parts. 1/2 of the book in the last half of the book .
    A lot of this part was a lot of character building. This is why it seemed a tiny bit slow in regards to lots of action and events.
    The next film is going to be a lot more intense.

The movie construct a really wonderful universe and they do it in a way that is really easy for the audience to follow up. The Dune series of book are my favorite of all time. With that said, yeah it's a lot to take in. It's been considered "unfilmable" until now simply because of the deep, rich and intense world building and lore involved. I would normally try to explain and update the things that you may have missed, not understood or even things they couldn't cover. I can't even try to do that here. There are elements of the backstory that need so much setup you could, and people have, written entire series of books about them. I feel like this is ALMOST too much if you haven't read and really taken in, at least, the original series.
    And no, even the books aren't "fun". This story, regardless of the medium, requires effort on the part of the audience. I won't call that good or bad just that it's a very specific thing. I personally have loved this story for most of my life and it's helped shaped me as a person. But, if you go into this blind, I can see why people would be confused and maybe a little put off.

    _Dune_ is a very dense, intellectually-engaging book with an incredible amount of world-building, and trying to translate it into movies can't be easy. I think that you absolutely could not do the book any sort of justice in a single movie, so I'm glad they at least got two, but I still wish for a trilogy. _Dune_ itself is divided into three sections (called "books"), and it seems like those would've made for ideal movie splits, and given them more time to develop things, because there's a fair amount that was left out or rushed. I think this movie does an admirable job overall, but I'm not without my criticisms. Yueh, for instance, was underdeveloped as a character, so his betrayal didn't really mean much: "Oh... it's that random guy." And I really miss the banquet and the plot to paint Jessica as a spy. I don't think _Dune_ is big on emotionally-relatable characters anyway, but I still feel like if we had had more time, the characters could've been a bit more developed and meant a bit more. But maybe it would just never really be your thing. I find history interesting, and listen to history lectures and so forth, so maybe I just fit the target demographic more than you do. Still, I think it's a pretty daunting movie, with how much information it introduces, and somebody without any familiarity with the book, the previous movie, or the miniseries probably has to be okay just going with the flow and getting the gist of things more than following every detail. I do think you'd find the movie a lot easier to understand on a rewatch though. How much that would translate to enjoyment, I can't say. I do think it tries harder to be a work of art than it tries to be fun, and much of the enjoyment derived from it is intellectual, if that makes sense.

    In the Dune universe, the events of this film actually *are* told in legends for hundreds of years after. The book series actually spans thousands of years, and Paul Atreides and Lady Jessica are certainly remembered. And yeah, this is just the set-up, really. This is the first half of the first book. It seems like an abrupt place to end the movie, but this is logically the best place to divide the story. This is where Paul Atreides essentially dies. He leaves everything behind from his old life except his mother and his ducal ring, and goes into the desert with the Fremen to become one of them. This decision to do that is the first real decision he makes with his visions. He sees many possible futures, and his actions govern which ones come true and which ones don't. He's been mostly passive about receiving these visions, but here he makes a choice to either die, or go down the path that leads to the holy war in his father's name that he foresaw in the tent. He chooses survival, but he still wants to avert that nightmare of a war that consumes the whole Imperium. Will he be able to find another way to avoid that future? That's the big question going into the next part of this story.
    Actually, each chapter of the book starts with an excerpt from various history books written in-universe about these events, so you're even more correct that this story feels like a story about historical events. These quotes are related in some way to the narrative that happens in the chapter that follows, giving the perspective of how people in the future think of these events, how various things have been exaggerated, mythologized, or propagandized, while the main prose of the work is the "real" story of what actually happened with Paul and Jessica, and how it came to be that they are remembered how they're remembered. Dune was written by Frank Herbert really as a study in the messiah myth as a concept, deconstructing it, and showing what it's like to actually be The One.

    This really is a film where you benefit so much by reading the book. The film does a great job, but its hard to pack so much of the book into a film.The point of paul is that he is NOT the one, he is not what the bene gesserit has been seeking, he is a generation too early, he is something else, something they cant control, but also something he cant control either, he sees the possible futures, but is also trapped by them.what I really like about this movie, is that it does the same as the books, it throws the viewer/reader in and expects you to keep up. It does not treat you like an idiot as a lot of modern films do, it expects more from its audience and so you get more out of it.
    But really, read the first book at least. (oh, and its proper sci fi, not all your questions are supposed to be answered, its provoking questions and thought, thats the point).

    The funniest part about your final statement is that they weren't green lit for a sequel when they made this. The director believed in his version of it that much.

    I watched this with my fiancee, who hadn't read Dune and had only absorbed bits of the lore and tropes from me and the cultural zeitgeist. We basically paused every fifteen minutes so I could give a digest of what the hell had just happened. Not that I mind: if there's one thing basically every Dune fan loves, it's talking about Dune.
    As densely packed as this movie is, there's reams of content that this movie leaps over. As a single example: the swirling paranoia of Jessica in the Atreides household because she's a Bene Gesserit is a huge element leading up to the Harkonnen attack, and in this movie it's almost boiled down to a single conversation between Leto and Jessica. In the book there's clashes and shadowboxing between Jessica and Leto, Jessica and Gurney, Jessica and Thufir... it's a lot.
    One thing that I didn't fully like in this was Josh Brolin's Gurney. In the book, Gurney is a warrior troubadour, kinda like Beast in the X-Men. He's a capable fighter but he's got a quote (or a song) for every occasion. But Brolin totally captures Gurney's massive Dad Energy with Paul, which is important.

    I absolutely love the Dune series, but, admittedly when i first started reading the books. I was like WTF!? am i dumb? There was just sooo much "stuff" I could not get thru book 1.
    Untill someone told me to read the glossary of said book first. This was like a Rosetta Stone for me entering the Dune world... a bit like homework? Yes, but it was well worth it ✌️

    Dune universe is set in the future that originated from a world similar to ours, so it makes sense that the name Paul, Jessica, Duncan is still commonly use in some cultures. And those are ancient names, not just some common Western names 😂 They can be traced back to Biblical era. It fits well with the story.

    Some explanation in case u guys are still reading:
    - When asked by the Benet Gesseret if he dreams with things that happens exacly like he dreamed, Paul answers 'not exacly'. The truth is all of his visions was fulfiled, just not exacly in the way he dreamed (but also yes).
    -> Paul died in the fight, because 'when you kill some one you also died'. He also died to let the Lisan al Gaib to rise in his place.
    -> Jamis did taught the ways of the desert to him by teaching about the honor, the fight, the die for your word, the the stronger is the one who leads, whats a kris knife and all those things.
    -> Duncan did died fighting many anemies alone.
    - The movie plays really well with the concept of the Chosen One. Insted of relying on it too much, what would subtract all the tention, since the chosen one would inevitable be successful in his journey, the movie questions (and makes you question) what is to be the Chosen One, if there is such a thing. Paul is the product of desteny, or a product of intention? The Bennet Gesseret spent hundres of years designedly inserting superstitions on Arakis, while manipulating politics, creating mariages, mixing bloodlines to create a powerful being. But is that just human intent or is that the way destinies makes it happens? Does the fact that Jessica had a son with Leto knowing that this could create the Quizarts Hadarak means that it was only a logical thing to do? Or did Jessica loved Leto from the beging? Does it makes their relationship more or less legit?
    - Also, Quizarts hadarak and Lisan al Gaib are kind of the same thing (not really, but you could consider both as being The Chosen One).
    - The names for the Atraides sounds normal to you because they are humans indeed. As American, the author used English as the normal language to the humans (each isn't that far from truth) and portraited the other species with different cultures and languages, most proeminantly Arabic in Arakis.
    - Funfact: That singing that Stella said sounds like having a icch on her throat is called Throat Singing and it's a very traditional technic on Mongolia. It requires for the singer to use the two sets of vocal chords at the same time and with some experience the singer can even sing in two different notes with each set. Besides sounds pretty ominous, that works well since the Sardukar was inspired over the biggest ordes on human history, the mongolians under the command of Gengis Khan.
    - Duncan didn't just found Jessica and Paul by chance after the attack. Yue left them a beam signer along with desert suits and equipment. He told that in a note for Paul and also told the Duke he was going to try his best for the sake of Paul. (but yes the movie is REEEEALLY hard to keep on track, so totally understandible. XD)
    And thats it! Thanks for the content, aways like to watch your reactions crue! I hope one day we can make a colab. XD
    Also, sorry about my English... necer actually studied the language. XD

    The Dune universe is set over 20,000 years in the future. The ancient ancestors of these people were Earthlings. Earth itself has pretty much passed into mythology by their time. Instead of being commonplace, very old names like Paul and Jessica could be rare and exotic to the inhabitants of the Imperium. You are applying your modern sensibilities to an alien culture so far removed from our own.

    25:03 in the first book, Paul Atreides is fifteen years of age, which sort of follows the medieval/feudal history of having teenage heirs lead charges into battle, and handle affairs that their father (the duke/king) is growing too old or too sick to do.

    Pauls visions actually all came true. Paul dreamed about Jamis: "He will teach me." and he tought him that mercy has no place in the desert. Also: The weak, spoiled Paul Atreides had to die in order for him to survive.
    One thing most people are missing is the Harkonnens use of energy weapons in situation where shields were present. According to the lore hitting a Holtzman shield with an anergy weapon results in a huge detonation (think H-Bomb).

    Hey guys great reaction as always, I find your comments at the end really on point, as I understand it the author wanted one of the main messages to be a warning agaisnt messiahs and religious heros. If i'm not mistaken he said that messiahs should come with a warning: might be dangerous to your health.

    I think your expectations of this movie didn't prepare you at all for what were you about to witness LOL. This is absolutely not a movie to sit down, have fun and relax, it's an experience. You were too focused on being confused you missed half the answers for your questions. But I get it, you weren't prepared and it was a lot. Also the movie itself is NOT holding your hand and guiding you easily, it gives you just the amount of information you need at the moment but very briefly so it's easy to miss. I definitely think on second watch you will understand a lot more. Maybe it will grow on you too. But if not I also understand, everyone has their tastes😊 I myself didn't read the books nor watched the previous movies but I know people who read the books and they told me that the story was very epic and phylosophical so I guess I prepared myself mentally for what's to come. And oh boy, what an experience it was in the cinema! The sounds were extraordinary, the backpipes blasted my eardrums for sure and the throatspeech I felt in my gut.
    Anyway, thanks for the video and can't wait for more reactions in the future!

    Just want to add an interpretation for the end. Paul's vision is of Jamis showing him "the way of the desert" ... and also another vision where Paul dies. At one point the narration suggests to take a life is to take your own.
    It seems like Paul's visions were wrong, but the interpretations of them were wrong. Jamis did absolutely show Paul the way of the desert, by quickly demonstrating the rules and ethos under which they live, and to show Paul that he must be prepared to take life to survive. Paul dying in the vision could be interpreted in line with the narrator, as Paul takes Jamis' life he ceases to be Paul any longer.
    As a side note, I worked on this film and slowly go through the reaction videos - I really enjoyed this one.
