    After years of amateur guitaring I've finally accepted that there's after you get past the relatively small number of objective requirements for a guitar (stays in tune, intonation is right, frets leveled, electronics actually work, that sort of thing) and the rest is entirely whatever special sauce that makes you want to pick the thing up and play it every chance you get.
    Some people get that out of a $5k Gibson, but it's important to know that maybe, just maybe, you can get it from a $297 Harley Benton.

    • @alexeypolevoybass

      I play a $350 Cort bass on streams, and almost every new viewer gives me a compliment for the tone, then asks how the hell did I make it sound so good. My secret sauce is fresh strings and good IRs. It’s that simple. If your instrument is at least half decent, you’re good to go.

    When I was about 13-14, I saw a video on UA-cam comparing an expensive guitars on bad amps and cabs, with a cheap $200 dollar guitar with good amps and cabs. That old video showed a while ago the amp is the most important part of a rig. Because no matter how he EQ’d it, the expensive guitar just did nothing to improve the bad amp and cabs tone. I can’t comprehend why anyone would think the guitar or pickups are more important when the amp is the reason you get sound in the first place.

      That's why I own a couple nice amps (with nice speakers), and lots of Squier Classic Vibe, Epiphone, and other cheap-o guitars haha. All I care about with an electric guitar is -- does it feel good in my hands? (that's what she said) And does it look nice? I like having guitars with different pickup configurations and bridge/trem styles, as well as having a few strung for alternate tunings. But regardless, I'd rather have 10 guitars in the $250-500 range than 1 guitar in the $2500-5000 range. I own one expensive guitar (American Jazz Bass), and only because I got a killer deal on it haha. I'd rather spend my money on fun stuff like pedals and recording gear than expensive guitars. I'm the same way with my drums -- I have a couple nice kits, but nothing super high-end because it's just not worth it. I can make an $800 drumset sound 99% as good as a $4,000 drumset with new heads and proper tuning for the room and style of music. I'm not trying to chase diminishing returns buying expensive crap that makes no discernable difference in the quality of my playing or sound.

      In my early days of playing guitar I tried all kinds of different pedals, cables, pickups, etc trying to improve my crappy sound. Then I saved up and bought my first "real" amp (a 5150 II) and it solved 100% of my tone problems.

    • @Pizvo
      @Pizvo 21 день тому +2

      You would usually buy more expensive guitars for the reliability (tuning, wood warping, tremolo bridge stability), build quality (even frets, good pots and soldering, level neck for low action) and feel (mostly personal, but has something to do with neck finishing, consistent neck shape and thickness, etc.).
      Cheap guitars can be really bad at some of those points, even if they are playable after a setup and a lot of them cant shake the "cheap feeling". Quality expensive guitars really do feel expensive and perfectly playable out of the box. And i mean real quality expensive guitars, not Gibson.
      If you can afford it and especially if it's your working tool, you tend to want the expensive guitar. Same thing if you order the guitar online and can't try it out- cheap ones are lottery, you only get a perfect one if you're lucky.
      I had a couple of Harley Bentons and they really are hit or miss - you basically roll a dice every time you order one and most (even the good ones) have annoying build errors. Similar thing with below-CV Squiers - i currently have a dud Anniversary Telecaster ordered from Thomann, the neck is borderline tragic (frets are not level, neck angle is off because of the heel joint and the nut cavity is of uneven depth, which i found out while fitting in a Tusq replacement). Had the cheapest Sterling by Musicman bass, had to return the first one because the neck was warped in 3D and the replacement one had warped pickguard and shoddy soldering.
      Never ever happened with for example PRS SE (had half a dozen of them, all next to perfect), therefor a bigger price tag then the competition. Ibanez guitars also tend to be quality even in low budget territory (if you want a reliable floyd guitar for example, you can't go wrong with even the low budget models in the S series; had three, all great). Price is not all just the name...
      You end up with less headache, more playing that way. Trust me, i owned over 50 guitars, mostly low to mid budget. I'm writing from experience.

I said "I've noticed every active pickup gets the exact same descriptions thrown at them. I also didn't see any reponse graphs to justify the money being spent." Not 30 seconds later I get a notification saying it was removed for "harassment" claims. Hearing him talk about tone wood and how his pick ups were worked on and all those buzz words that is usually used to describe pick ups, is kind of sad.

    I'm a bedroom bandit at best, as in the only place I play my guitars is at home, and maybe at Christmas when the family puts the pressure on and I've drunk enough Christmas cheer to do so.
    I've been dabbling in recording at home over the last 5 or so years for a few reasons. It makes me play better and I'm just testing myself to see if I can produce something that at least sounds like it might be real. I'm doing all the things like recording at least 2, often 4, takes for each guitar part, etc.
    I see a lot of your videos talking about speakers, mics and mic position, and so on. My situation is this: I have a handful of very cheap guitars all strung differently for different tuning but the jewel in my financially unjustified setup is my Kemper profiler and a bunch of tones I've either bought or gotten from the Kemper rig community.

    I was thinking about that GW article and the Sheds pickups bringing his les paul to life. Chances are, he replaced the strings when he swapped pickups. Well yeah, hell yeah putting fresh strings on will bring his les paul to life! I'm with you on this Glenn, there was probably nothing wrong with the stock pickups, maybe replace your strings more frequently when it starts sounding a little dull. Thanks Glenn, because of you and your channel I approach my sound and playing in a much more methodical way and I haven't replaced a stock pickup since I started watching your channel and Holy crap the tones I get are fantastic!

Couldn't believe how light and weedy the Laney HH speaker felt next to the dead weight of the Mojo Tone. £70 on ebay. Best money I've spent in a while. I appreciate being told about "cheap" guitars. My kids have kind of moved on form guitar, so this isn't quite as relevant for me anymore. I still like seeing what companies are willing to put out for what price point. In regards to pick-ups, I'm going to be starting a Stratocaster rebuild due to the internals being patched together with crimp connectors and bad pots. If I have time, I may be doing a lot of non-scientific tests: Do pots make a difference? Pickups, switches, even the shielding job I'm planning. I'll be spending a LOT of time with a soldering iron, that's for sure.

Same tuning, same strings same amp same everything but I can notice a slight difference in the sound. Could this be due to the output of the pickups or anything else?. PD I have an Ibanez 6 strings with the ibanez INF pickups and there are no difference at all compared to the yamaha.

    I have to say these inexpensive guitars are getting better and better! I just bought a Leo Jaymz Monsoon in Violet Burl. After I unpacked it and gave it a good once over the quality of the build on a scale from 1 to 10. A big ten. I plugged it in and it actually amazed me how great it played 9 out of ten because the strings were just OK. I played it thru several of my amps tubes Solid State and my Valvetronix just to see how well it would play thru the different amps. Not much of a difference I wish I had a way to record my results but I do not have a decent enough way to make a decent recording. $250.00 shipped to my door and I would say it could easily stand up to a guitar costing ten times as much. I really tried to find anything aside from the strings to bitch about. I noticed you haven't reviewed on yet if you get a chance I think the guitar will surprise you.

    I have only ever changed pickups when they had a microphonic problems, that's on guitar and bass. Also the only thing I find that actually changes the way the guitar sounds is some foam under the strings past the nut as it stops the ringing after you mute. Maybe some foam in the springs in the back too. Then again it's not the actual tone but the quality of the sound.

    Hey Glenn, really love your channel. I've learned over and over what an idiot I've been, wasting so much money on ridiculous efforts to chase the perfect tone with pickups, tubes, and other useless "upgrades." Also, being from the US, I really do enjoy hearing you call out the WAY WAY overpriced made in the USA guitars. I've been bashed many times for playing non US guitars, but never found one that was significantly better to play.
    I wanted to share an experience I had a few decades ago. I had gone to the Carvin guitar factory in San Diego, and got to try some gear. At the time I was playing the MTS 3200 head through two mismatched cabinets. My dream guitar was the DC 400, their flagship model at that time. So I grabbed one, plugged into the amp with the Carvin cabinets, set it exactly how I had it at home, and couldn't get a sound any heavier than southern rock. The sales rep took the guitar, and came back with another one that for all intents and purposes was the exact same guitar. I plugged it in, and it sounded like god was talking through the speakers. Amazing much heavier sound. He told me the only difference was the first one was built with alder, and the second was built with Koa wood. I know this is nothing more than anecdotal, and I of course do not have sound samples. But this is my lived experience, and I'm simply curious if there is anything in your experience that would explain why this was? Or am I simply crazy, stupid, or otherwise impaired? My son was with me, and also blown away by the difference. Anyway, thanks again for what you do, it truly is educational and eye opening.

  • @fateunleashed9680
    @fateunleashed9680 21 день тому

    I could've sworn on one of Jim lil's videos he mentioned the pickup location relative to the bridge would change the sound. I'm mainly talking about the neck pickup changing sound since bridge pickup location doesn't really change much. My understanding is the physical vibration range of the string is largest in the center between the bridge and nut, and smallest at each end. Meaning the closer the neck pickup is to that midpoint, the more the sound should change. A pickup is outputting the voltage induction from the string vibrations inside the magnetic field, so you'd think more vibe would sound different than less vibe. Or maybe it just going to make a louder/stronger signal therefore seeming different to perception from Fletcher-Munson effects. Maybe this is worth checking into? You could create a setup like a lap steel, but with a pickup in a slide mount to see if there are changes in sound across the scale length.

    My main guitar is a GEM junior which I bought second hand for €350 it is (so far) the nicest guitar I’ve ever placed although I did play a guild starfire which came close.
    I’ve always wanted an offset but don’t have the budget so I’m in the process of (butchering) converting a cheap partscaster tele into a semi hollow offset.
    Kits I have a guitar kit world custom shop on order ( will be September before I get it) it will be made as close to a falcon as I can get it. Their kits seem to be well made and inexpensive so why not do one of their stock kits.

    Please have a look at EART and Grote guitars with stainless frets. The most important, hardest to fix part of a guitar is the neck, and you can buy EART and Grote guitars with stainless frets (that will probably never need a fret job) for less than buying just the neck from Warmoth. I have an EART tele with a roasted maple neck I'm really impressed with, but want to change the bridge pickup only because it's not loud enough to match the neck pickup, and am looking to get a Grote LP style which is so cheap (around $200 with stainless frets) that if the neck is any good, that's a great basis for putting in a coil-split set of humbuckers and getting all the tones I have any idea how to use...

As we explore the information available out there for tracking instruments/vocals, I've come across a question that I'm not sure you've answered in detail or had a detailed video about (If you have, my apologies, you have many videos up right now). Do you have any specific recommendation/cautions/considerations when it comes to patch cables specifically for recording? These can be the cables going from instrument to DI/Rig, cables for player's pedalboards, etc. My basic understanding is that not every cable is made equally and quality can shift from brand to even length of the cable.
